I wanted to like this place so much but unfortunately, Casa Tropical missed the mark for me.
I frequent another Brazilian bakery on Dundas West (the low prices and fresh eats keep me coming back) but thought I’d branch out. After seeing they had Brazilian cheese balls (pão de queijo) available on UberEats, I opted to walk-in instead. I was greeted politely but was informed they longer offered this despite it being available on Uber. I was extremely understanding, ordering something else so as to still support the business and not leave empty-handed. The gentleman suggested chicken coxinhe or beef kibe, so I purchased one of each to try. I was told that it would be ready in about 5 minutes, so I paid and sat at a table. The two savoury pastries plus a canned beverage came up to $17 and change, not including the tip that I left. After about ten minutes, I left with the tiniest box in my hand and $20 less in my pocket.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the flavour in both was phenomenal and you could tell they had been made to order! They were both a beautiful golden colour, perfectly crispy on the outside (I really WANT to say good things about this place!!!!!!). But unfortunately, I ended up throwing both of them out after a couple of bites. The chicken at the centre of the coxinha was still cold to the touch (it was pre-cooked so not undercooked) and the dough was still undercooked beneath the golden outer layer. The beef kibe — while the flavour was delicious — was barely warmed throughout.
I wouldn’t have minded about the temperature or even the fact that the coxinha was underdone, but when you’re paying around $8 each for these pastries, it was extremely disappointing (especially when most other places charge a fraction of the price for these specialities).
I’d consider giving this cute little place another shot if the price wasn’t so steep, because so many other patrons seem to love Casa Tropical. Wishing the store owners luck and hoping they continue to improve their...

I've had the pao de queijo and their feijoada. I’ve been trying to try Brazilian food for a minute and the opportunity presented itself. The pao de queijo was unlike anything I’ve personally ever had, a really cool combo of cheesy and chewy which was fun and satisfying to eat. The feijoada was also cool, the stew itself wasn’t super flavourful itself but the accompaniments made up for it. Super tender pork and black beans, with an acidic tomato salsa/vinaigrette, herbed ground and crunchy cassava, and some kale and rice made a great meal for the rainy weather that was going on. Every component was served separately so I could also make my own bites and switch up the flavours myself. The dude running the place was also super nice and friendly. We were small talking and such, and he also blessed me the pao de queijo when I was a little short with the cash I had on me the first time I came. Honestly what prompted me to come back and get the feijoada. Kind of place that makes me love being a Torontonian, cool people representing their heritage and everyone being able to share in and...
Read moreFirst of all, I really love Brazilian food and I was extremely excited about my Uber order placed this afternoon.
I ordered a few items, my favourite ones: chicken pie, coxinha, carrot brigadeiro cake, coconut cake, brigadeiro ball, coconut ball, and lastly Guarana pop. I have to be honest and confess that for the price I paid for the above items was not worthy at all.
Despite the chicken pie was tasty and a good portion, the coxinha was too small for the steep price. The main point for my disappointment was the cakes which I was hoping to love, but they were too small, both of them. The carrot cake with brigadeiro, shouldn’t be advised as brigadeiro, because it’s not brigadeiro!!! In fact it’s just a carrot cake with chocolate whipped cream. I wish I could say amazing things about my order, however nothing made me happy to do so.
Now, I haven’t tried the entire menu from Casa Tropical, and this review is only based on the items I experienced ordering through Uber Eats.
Wishing the owner...
