Cocoâs is a small independent coffee shop/bakery past Grace St. I believe the owner used to be a pastry chef and the place actually was Empire coffee prior to it being taken over from a friend.
Iâve been going here since it was newly owned just around the time I came back to Canada, and itâs one of the top 5 joints in TO that I always recommend to friends.
They offer an assortment of the usual cafe drinks such as drip, espresso based, etc. In the summer, they change lemonade flavours that arenât your usual run-of-the mill type and are def a go-to if you like sweet refreshers. Their matcha is weak, but since I work with a lot of matcha farms my palette is used to vibrant and fresh matcha. In the colder months, the Cable Knit is the ultimate. Itâs a mix of malt, and spices in a latte and I get happy just thinking about it, and I donât even drink coffee!
They also do pastries such as croissants and danishes. Aside from that, they usually have the giant cookies, earl grey or neapolitan shortbread, some kind of muffin, pineapple or blackberry bundt on the weekdays, and weekends you can find more cinnamon rolls, cakes and tarts/squares. They donât really have a schedule for these so itâs just luck, which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Some of my peers seem to really hate that, but I think itâs because the treats are all top notch, and they canât find the ones they love every single time they visit.
Thereâs also the highlightâthe breakfast sandwich: folded egg, bacon and cheese wrapped between buttery and heavenly angel biscuit made in-house. JustâŠtry it.
Also, since itâs independently owned they sometimes do last minute changes to the hours or delays. No phone line so you just have to check on ig but itâs unfortunate for people who donât do social media, or they miss the stories because they donât seem to pin their notices. I ought to think a business should do more than leave a few words on the screen and leaveâŠ
Nevertheless, itâs a very intimate and lovely joint for walks and afternoon dates/meetups. People seem to complain about the seating but Iâve never seen a problem with it, as inside they have about 3 sets for 2-3 people and 2 for 2 outside plus patio in the summer. Thatâs just about the average seating for all coffee joints in the city except franchises. The staff here are also all super kind, which Iâm super grateful for since I understand that sometimes you have off days or misunderstandings in customer service but I have yet to see them in it. If youâve ever had a bad experience at Cocoâs, take my word and try one more time. Itâll be your...
Read morecocos neighborhood coffee shop is super quaint, a great place to do some work (although quite busy), and all the staff are super friendly. PLUS the breakfast sandwich and scone were PHENOMENALLLLLL !!
the apple cheddar rosemary scone was actually so incredible, it was the most wonderful combination of flavours. the outside was crunchy and crusted with deliciously salty cheddar, while the inside was bready and soft, but not dry. the pungency of the cheese was beautifully complemented by the AROMATIC and FRAGRANT and sage-y rosemary, and all the savoury flavours were balanced by a subtle, but sweet and bright undertone from the apples. the only thing was that i wish they couldâve warmed it up for me.
also, the angel breakfast sandwich was just as delicious and something that you MUST get â itâs definitely one of the best in toronto. the biscuit is super soft and mushy and warm and comforting and had melted cheese all over it. the bacon was smoky and crispy and savoury and salty, and it was lying on top of a thick, soft egg frittata. i absolutely LOVEDDDD the sauce they added â it was described at hot honey butter, but it tasted more like an aioli or sweet mayo to me , but it was a really amazing tangy sweet-ish kick to the slight oiliness and savouriness of the biscuit and bacon.
i also tried their big cookie, which was pretty nOrmal i would say?? like itâs really well made, but it wasnât revolutionary. it had a crunchy baked exterior and a chewy soft (but not underbaked) centre, and it was very much LOADED with sweet chocolate chips. i loved pairing it with a warm, frothy...
Read moreI love coffee and unique sweets. This place does not disappoint. I came here looking for interesting and unique bakes. I order a few items that they offered on a Saturday noon time. Boy, were they good. I had their pink/green checkered slice cake. That was lovely. If you like marzipan, then youâll love the icing on this. Simple slice, great with coffee. Another worthy try is the pineapple upside down cake. Lovely small Bundt cake, reminiscent of those Caribbean rum cakes, but without the rum but super moist and feels homemade. AWESOME and loved it. If you like savory, there was this cinnamon roll like bun which was yummy with cheese. That was refreshing when youâre looking for something more hearty. Would be awesome if you slice it sideways and use it as a bread to a sandwich. One more item that was delightful was the peaches and cream square with oats. OMG, that was homemade, delicious, creamy and just a treat. Really enjoyed that a lot. So if youâre looking for non-patisserie, simple bakes but unique, this quaint little place is cozy and delicious. It is a narrow but cozy atmosphere. Bustling for the right reasons. Has character and the staff was super friendly which compliment the touch of the place. Will be coming back for sure for more...
