Went to the restaurant after reading the reviews but sadly it’s not even average Indian food. Then realised that the positive reviews were mainly by non Indians. The Nepali owner was bragging to everyone that the chef had worked in Moti Mahal in New Delhi - a restaurant which invented the original butter chicken and that’s how original their butter chicken is! Being a through and through Delhi-ite I don't think he’s been anywhere near the place. Well for one the original butter chicken underwent a lot of metamorphosis over the past 70 odd years and none of the Moti mahals serve that anymore. They opened a new chain a couple of years ago called ‘ Daryaganj’ which has the ‘original’ on the menu which is no more popular. Anyway the Nepali owner who took our order while giving us the history of the butter chicken botched up our order. No apology was offered, in fact he smilingly asked us to come again if we wanted to try what we had actually ordered !( shocking arrogance in the guise of politeness)Seems they do not want Indian customers especially those who know their food. Glib talking does not equal to good customer service. Try resolving an issue with them which may cost them a penny . The food is only for those who do not know what colour a ‘ korma’ is or what Indian dishes should taste like ! Indian food is like …x (when it’s good it’s very good and when it’s bad it’s...
Read moreCome in to Cumin Kitchen! I've been here twice now and I have to say, the food is prepared and served with attention to detail, fresh ingredients, and balanced, deep flavours. Our server was a young woman who took the time to explain the flavour profile of various dishes and to recommend meals to each one of us according to our tastes. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and preparation of the food, which honestly made ordering a learning experience about Indian cuisine! In a group of 5, each one of us was pleased with our meal, and 4 of us had to pack food to-go because of the generous portions. The cheese naan and mint paratha were delectable, as were the samosas, onion bhaji and pakoras. There are plenty and tasty vegetarian options as well, including Daal Makhani, which I ordered. I'd recommend the fish curry if you like savoury, complex, spicy curries, and the mango lassi for a sweet end to the meal. They also have a tandoor -- I plan on sampling their tandoori menu next. As for the atmosphere and decor, it is appropriate for a date or celebration -- a great sit-down restaurant with plenty of space. I'll...
Read moreCumin was a pleasant surprise of a place, Nestled on the Danforth among the traditional food offerings is this cute Indian restaurant. Decorated very tastefully yet not with the traditional over bearing art and decorations. We being a large part of 12 were quickly greated an seated at our reserved table.
The menu is well organized and there are plenty of options to suit most pallets as well as wallets. I found the price point for Cumin to be very reasonable considering what you pay at other Indian restaurants.
All the dishes we ordered were cooked perfectly, the goat was tender as were the chicken dishes..the only thing I did note and this isnt a knock per say was that the flavours off the dishes while present felt muted compared to what I have tasted in other establishments. That isn't to say the food is bland or tasteless, but more perhaps a conscious effort to make the food approachable to all who would want to try it.
Overall Cumin is a fresh take on the establishment, the staff is friendly, attentive and always available to address...
