The best sushi restaurant in Toronto. I think this is saying something since we have Sushi Moto and Sushi Tomo and many other fancy but silly names, not including the AYCE variety. But why have you deigned to sit here in the middle of nowhere, excepting a nearby guitar store and a "university" everyone commutes to? Beats me, but I appreciate you Genji and I solemnly accept there must be a reason for you being closed on Sunday and refusing to deliver. We must have misused that privilege. I'm sorry.
So anyways, let me give you some proper info.
The cost of rolls (special rolls like dragon "xyz" and all) is $15-20. I never saw one for more than twenty and they are exquisite. Very tight pieces, 8-10, but not small. This plus something else is a meal. Hand rolls are expensive in my experience. Each one is $5 (that's one single green edible paper cone [i don't care] filled with fish and rice). The spicy tuna one is $7 last i checked, and my favourite; spicy salmon is also fantastic. Genji is probably a foot taller than anyone else when it comes to handrolls. Definitely try it. Shrimp tempura are A+. One time i got takeout and ran into a friend and sat chatting before I remembered I had gotten the tempura. It had been 90 minutes but when i dipped it in the sweet water-sauce i understood "some crispiness lost is still Genji competing with Genji." If you like breaded things they take it quite seriously. Kalbi- it's good but Kalbi is kalbi as long as you have that kalbi sauce. Appetite will be a scarce commodity here man. Party trays. An excellent investment though they've gone up in price. Now it's $60 plus for two people. Sushi + sashimi is a diverse selection. Uni is great. I was curious but worried considering... what they are. People say it's bitter, i dunno what it is but it melts in your mouth and has an enduring taste. Also costly, i think $10+ for a few pieces. Sake is the ideal partner. I think i could seduce any girl with a sushi dinner here and sake. Only problem is I would get drunk first and so i prefer... Sapporo. I know it's just a brand but I like it a lot here. Best beer with sushi. "Dinner" menu. Never tried it. It's probably more cost-effective than my A la Carte entitlement.
Dining in. Quiet atmosphere with those hard Japanese curtains. There's always space. I don't really get it and then i do also. York U newspaper gave us a list of the best dining sites in the area. Never mentioned Genji. On-campus sushi costs five bucks less and I hurt my teeth on the fridge(freezer?)-cold rice.
*Take out. Bring cash.
Service is great. I think Japanese service is usually special, treating delicacy as an art form (like origami!). They've always been unassuming and patient with me. All waitresses I believe. Although once, when I was looking for a part-time job I dropped by. They broke into laughter as soon as i handed them my resume. I was pretty hurt, i thought I'd get some graceful bows amidst all the rejections that day... Anyways that was the one time. AND ONE TIME IS ENOUGH TO DAMN YOU, I AM REMOVING A STAR NOW GENJI YOU HEAR THAT ONLY 4 FOR YOU HAH WHAT CAN YOU POSSBLY DO NOW!!!!!!..... no i'm not, just wanted to be a super villain but i mean who even reads this. i didn't read heart of darkness and i got an A on the book report... what's that about? i will though. i mean it's out of copyright, i ought to. supposed to be good. teacher never said 'this book is good' though, he said something else. maybe he didn't read it either.
The only thing that is unoriginal is the wasabi. It's not some dragon nasal spray, it's the regular wasabi. But i guess that's like saying the ketchup at a proclaimed burger joint is regular Heinz.
Anyway enjoy your visit fellow idiot who never...
Read moreSushi is close to my heart. That wasn't always the case, but you come to love the stuff after friends drag you to enough Asian restaurants. So read on to see how Genji Sushi ranks atop my sushi experiences.
Genji Sushi is a small to medium sized sushi restaurant in the North York area, along Steeles Avenue. It has an intimate and elegant vibe that could certainly suit a date, but works for just about any small group experience. Lastly, word to the wise, Genji is an à la carte restaurant.
I was interested in a little bit of variety, so I sprung for the sushi & sashimi dinner, $30. This comes with 11 pieces of assorted sashimi, 7 pieces of assorted sushi, 3 California rolls, and 3 spicy salmon rolls. Overall, I would say that I was quite satisfied. The entire plate gave the impression of care and freshness. All of the fish tasted very fresh and had the texture to match, the ginger was a welcome regular ginger colour rather than the perplexing pink that I'm often served, and some at the table were of the opinion that they serve real wasabi instead of the wasabi-adjacent horseradish version. (Who knows if it actually was.) I would say that if you're dining at Genji, you are dining for the fundamentals of a sushi meal done right. They don't appear to care for featuring creative varieties of rolls with novel toppings. They go by the book.
And my personal note; I think AYCE sushi is overrated. This meal was plenty, and if you're dying for variety, just order different things with friends. Problem solved. Go to Genji!...
Read moreThis is not an ayce joint and only bentos are served for lunch. The food was great, and the atmosphere was intimate. However, there definitely were a few hiccups - for instance, upon entering the waitress forgot to give us a menu so we sat there waiting until she came back asking if we were ready to order. She realized her mistake and apologized, then handed us a few copies to look over.
After ordering our food, she forgot to give us plates so I had to ask for some. It wasn't even busy so not sure why it was one thing after the other. Pretty much after the plate incident it was getting better but nonetheless a hassle for us to remind her of small things when we should just be enjoying our meals.
The food was delicious and very good in my opinion. The portion sizes are decent, with the perfect ratio of rice to veggies and meat. All of the prices were also pretty comparable to most sushi places.
The bathrooms were clean, and behind a separate door so you don't smell anything emitting from them. The atmosphere is nice and intimate and service in general is pretty friendly. This place is quite small, so prepare to wait unless you have a reservation or come at a good time when there's tables available for walk-in's. There is free parking right in front of...
