Simply the best bakery I've ever tried. Definitely a hole in a wall and not that noticeable compared to its other neighbouring restaurants and coffee shops; this bakery has such a simple menu, they know what they're good at and they do it well. The two most popular foods here are the walnut cake and hotteok. The walnut cake is just the name tells us, a pastry that looks exactly like a walnut and has fillings, Hodo Kwaja serves three types of pastry fillings for the walnut cake and you can mix the batch and they sell a bunch of these pastries for rather cheap price compared to other local bakeries (the highest one is 70 walnut cakes for $20), it's a bit comparable to Timmies in that way. The only down side to the walnut cakes are that they don't make them fresh, they don't even keep them warm, so you'll most likely taste a walnut cake that used to be fresh, bittersweet. The second one is hotteok and that's difficult to describe, but it's an amazing small hearty pancake that has syrup fillings inside, and when you bite it, it oozes out so seductively. The best part about the hotteok is that they do make them fresh, if I had to nitpick, the hotteok (which is suppose to be a street food) was really messy to eat (the fillings oozed out at an alarming rate), but i'm not too mad at the extra fillings. They don't really show their drink menus, all you would see is self serve coffee and tea (1.25 for small and 1.50 for medium, and i think 2.00 for large). But in the other side of their counter are korean drinks, which looked tasty. Overall, I definitely recommend this bakery for something other than timbits and will definitely be back...

2022 September 4★ This store has been here for many many years and is one of the original stores in Korean Town. Been to this store for over 30 years as of writing and finally technology has caught up for a review.
There are two items here that are the most popular. The walnut cakes shaped like a walnut and the Chun Byung which is seasonally made due to high humidity during the summer months. Tried the Madeline and it was ok. A dense finger cake.
