Simply the best bakery I've ever tried. Definitely a hole in a wall and not that noticeable compared to its other neighbouring restaurants and coffee shops; this bakery has such a simple menu, they know what they're good at and they do it well. The two most popular foods here are the walnut cake and hotteok. The walnut cake is just the name tells us, a pastry that looks exactly like a walnut and has fillings, Hodo Kwaja serves three types of pastry fillings for the walnut cake and you can mix the batch and they sell a bunch of these pastries for rather cheap price compared to other local bakeries (the highest one is 70 walnut cakes for $20), it's a bit comparable to Timmies in that way. The only down side to the walnut cakes are that they don't make them fresh, they don't even keep them warm, so you'll most likely taste a walnut cake that used to be fresh, bittersweet. The second one is hotteok and that's difficult to describe, but it's an amazing small hearty pancake that has syrup fillings inside, and when you bite it, it oozes out so seductively. The best part about the hotteok is that they do make them fresh, if I had to nitpick, the hotteok (which is suppose to be a street food) was really messy to eat (the fillings oozed out at an alarming rate), but i'm not too mad at the extra fillings. They don't really show their drink menus, all you would see is self serve coffee and tea (1.25 for small and 1.50 for medium, and i think 2.00 for large). But in the other side of their counter are korean drinks, which looked tasty. Overall, I definitely recommend this bakery for something other than timbits and will definitely be back...

Walnut cake are delightful, and it's no wonder that many folks from the neighborhood are regular customers here.

The bakery had a cozy atmosphere, and it seemed to be a popular spot for people to drop by for a quick and tasty treat. As I entered, the aroma of freshly baked goods welcomed me, creating an inviting ambiance.

the walnut cakes were pleasant. These small cakes were shaped like walnuts and had a sweet, nutty flavor that was simply delicious. Their appearance was not only charming but also appetizing.

The service was commendable, with the staff being friendly and efficient. They knew how to make these walnut cakes well, and they served them up promptly with a warm smile.

This bakery has earned its place as a cherished part of the community. With its delightful walnut cakes and welcoming environment, it's no wonder that locals keep coming back for more. If you happen to be in the area, I recommend giving these walnut cakes a try, they're a delightful treat that many in the...

2023 May 4★ Still great. Still here for a reason. The Chun Byung $22 for 57pieces comes in a plastic box with a three flavors: Seaweed, almond & peanuts. Made of simple ingredients: Wheat flour, Sugar, Milk, Eggs, Margarine, Butter, Baking Soda & Salt. Better than store bought.

2022 September 4★ This store has been here for many many years and is one of the original stores in Korean Town. Been to this store for over 30 years as of writing and finally technology has caught up for a review.

There are two items here that are the most popular. The walnut cakes shaped like a walnut and the Chun Byung which is seasonally made due to high humidity during the summer months. Tried the Madeline and it was ok. A dense finger cake.

Walnut cakes 6 pieces @ $3.75, 12 @ $7.50, 30 @ $15, 66 @ $31. Suggest getting the 30 pieces.

Chun Byung 6 @ $3.50, 26 @ $11, 57 @ $22. Suggest getting the 57 as this is a favorite.

Free One hour parking is available on the side streets and it's just a walk...

Closed on Sundays, this Koreatown staple is known for its walnut cakes. You can watch their automatic walnut cake machine in action as it produces the signature food. Worth the trip and a great option to share for dessert and snacks! They offer different rates for individuals and if you're getting a bundled amount. There are three different walnut cake flavours to choose from. Our favourites went from Red Bean & Walnut (preferred), Mashed Potato & Almond to Mashed Potato & Walnut. Also, they offer Pancakes (Brown Sugar, Red Bean or Mixed), Madeleines and Chun Byung (Thin, Crunchy Waffle Cookies available in Fall-Spring). They take credit over a specific minimum or there is a service charge. There are seats inside the store too. Staff are very informative on the food options available and questions you may have!

Nice and friendly staff. The walnut cake machine/assembly line is right in your face as soon as you step into their bakery, which is interesting to watch. It's amazing how they can pump out so many walnut cakes during their baking times. I got a dozen of walnut cakes (6 Red bean and 6 Mashed potato) and 2 Korean pancakes (1 brown sugar and 1 red bean). The walnut cakes kind of taste like Chinese Waffle Balls (maybe it's a similar mix?). The pancakes were also delicious and again, the red bean pancake was sort of like a Chinese red bean pancake, except softer. Overall, my favourites were the red bean filled walnut cakes and pancakes. I also made a video on the walnut cakes and pancakes, so check out my YouTube channel!
