Ordering review: I preordered the salted egg yolk roll and lychee jasmine iced tea online in the morning before I went in the afternoon and my order was not ready by the time I got there. There were two staff there but they were definitely not prepared for soft opening as one staff was too busy noting down online preorders and the other staff was left to manage all walk in and pick up orders on her own (while there was a long lineup outside the store…). I even overheard one of the staff mentioning that they were out of stock on certain products but customers were still able too order them online- so I do recommend to call the store first to ensure the product you want is in stock. The staff primarily managing the orders was not very attentive as I was waiting there for a while and she took the orders of two customers behind me instead. The packaging of a single cake slice was also not that great as it was a small box that had just fit so beware that your cake slice might get smushed or will topple over. Interior decor of the store was well designed- it is a simple sunset-coloured confetti background but also very aesthetically nice. I recommend to not going during busy hours as the customer service will not be great.
Food review: The salted egg yolk roll tasted good- a combination of salty and sweet- neither overpowering each other, with the pork floss enhancing that duo. Unfortunately, my salted egg cream was stuck to the box due to poor packaging but still tasted great. I couldn't tell if there was suppose to be sweet syrup in the lychee jasmine drink or not but it was sour- definitely lacked a sweetener. However, it was to my liking because I usually order 30% or no sugar with my drinks but if you like a sweet drink, I don't recommend this.
Overall, the food was mediocre but the poor customer service weighed my review...
Read moreI was very excited to try this place for the grand opening and ordered their salted egg cake. The website was easy to use and the pictures and the flavours that they offer are so unique!
When I brought it home, I noticed that the cake was smaller than advertised. The website does say it's 6" and I've ordered a lot of 6" cakes before to know that this was not 6". I decided to measure the cake and it just meets 5". SO if you plan to order this cake, do expect a smaller size than regular 6" cakes out there. The flavour was unique but I'm not sure if it was for me. Perhaps, I need to try the other goodies in the bakery.
Overall, it's worth a try if you're looking for a distinct cake and taste.
UPDATE/RESPONSE:
Thanks for the prompt response. I would love to hear your response on these as your reply makes me raise some questions:
I'm surprised you did not "notice" and had to "measure" your cakes again. As a person who doesn't eat or make cakes on a daily basis, this was quite noticeable, AND if it's just one cake that was substantially smaller than the rest of the batch, that would be very obvious. How could this slip from your entire team? Do you NOT inspect your cakes before giving it to customers? I'm sure there were many opportunities to ensure the cake passed its quality (during baking, pulling out of oven, and packaging etc.) Have you not nailed down your baking process that it "accidentally" shrunk after coming out of the oven? Are all cakes different then? 1/6 of cake that shrunk should not be a "bit" considering this is something that's advertised.
I would really love to try the "REAL" cake that I...
Read moreI was excited to try the salted egg goods because I looveeee 鹹蛋 (haam daan). I got the roll cake slice. Unfortunately no pic because I bought it yesterday and today it kinda slumped over and looked bad.
I was expecting a strong salted egg flavour, but it was actually very mild. I wasn't a big fan of the custard filling, maybe because it was too thick and oozing everywhere (and reminded me of vanilla pudding which I hate lol), but in terms of flavour it was also just mildly sweet. There wasn't a lot of salted egg flavour at all, except in the dollop of icing on top, which might be good for people who don't know it yet but I wish it was more prominent, considering it is in the name. I liked the cake itself; it was sweet and solid enough to hold up against all the filling. Maybe it would've been better if I ate it the same day as the purchase, but cakes normally hold up well even after a day.
I looked through some photos of the salted egg whole cake, and it seems like it has a different filling (and toppings) than the roll cake. It might be good if they sold slices of the cake as well, or instead of the roll cake.
I probably won't try the roll cake again, but I do wanna try their tiramisus and other pastry goods next time.
Edit: I tried the (two-day old) condensed milk and salted egg croissants today, after warming them in the oven. The condensed milk was really good, but the salted egg was mild like the roll cake. Both were crisp...
