I was ignored and then insulted by staff at the St. Clair Ave. location this morning. After which I was refused service. I won't be returning to patronize your business again. I couldn't figure out how to reply to your response, but thank you for doing so. I went in to the St. Clair store on Saturday morning. I waited at the front by the bread for service as I usually do. A young Asian woman was stocking those shelves and I waited for her to ask me for my order. She did not do so but noticed there was no more whole wheat. She was told there was more in the rear. She went to the back and returned but still did not serve me, despite the fact she had acknowledged another customer leaving the shop. Once again she left without saying anything to me. In my frustration I grabbed a plastic bag off the roll and very carefully took a challah from the shelf without touching any other bread. She finally deigned to speak to me, "Don't touch the bread!" I replied "Then wait on me." The other woman in the shop made some remark about standing in line to order but as I said I usually wait by the bread to be served. I then joined the checkout line. The blond woman then asked me for the bread and I complied though I wasn't clear as to why. The Asian woman then took the cash and said that I would not be served. I was shocked but only replied with a rude remark and left. While I know I was in the wrong to grab the bread myself, I had never been ignored in such a pointed way in that store previously. I hope this is sufficient detail to understand the situation. I appreciate...

It is disappointing to say, but today was my last visit to Mabel's. What was once a wonderful bakery and prep meal place to patronize, is no longer. I have refrained from writing a negative review in hopes that the quality and portion size of products would improve, however, it hasn't. The last few visits, previous to today's, I started to notice the creep up in price and what I suspected was shrinking product size, especially the baked goods. Product sizes SEEMED to be getting smaller, is what I was strongly suspecting.

My suspicions were confirmed today when I went in to pick up one butter pecan bar and one triple chocolate brownie. The employee who served me handed me the smallest box I have ever seen. As I walked away from the counter to exit the store, the box felt so light that I thought they only fulfilled half my order. When I got home and opened the box I saw the two small pieces, each measuring 2" by 2". For this I was charged $10.15 AND was prompted for a tip!!!!! Had I have seen the size of the portions before I left the store, I would have returned my purchase.

The pecan square was hard as a rock, dry, and flavourless. The brownie, although chocolatey, lacked any discernible sweetness.

Mabel's, like several other businesses, have miscalculated how they make and present their products during this inflationary period. Charging MORE and giving LESS to the customer is a recipe (pun intended) for failure. Pick one of the two, NOT both!

I am incredibly disappointed with the Roncesvalles location enough that I won't be patronizing other...

Another update They say insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. I am officially insane for ordering another birthday cake from Mabel’s and expecting them to get it right. I like to support businesses in the Junction so they won’t close down and become a Tim Horton’s. So my son and I sat down and spent time picking out a chocolate cake for his baby sister’s 1st birthday. Then we cut into it and of course, it’s not chocolate (see photos of my online order and the cake we got). Yes, it’s a first world problem and it’s just cake, but tonight I had a disappointed 4 year old and for the price we paid, you should have got this right. I won’t be ordering a cake here again.

Update I am still a loyal Mabel’s customer (I think I have been there everyday for the last week) but I am updating my former 5 star review because today, for the second time, I went to pick up a birthday cake I ordered from the Junction location and it wasn’t there. They chalked it up to a “kitchen issue”. I understand mistakes happen but this is the second time in a row it’s happened to us. I know it’s a first world problem and it’s just cake, but still disappointing that we are not able to get the cake we wanted for our three year old’s birthday party. Please get it together, Mabel’s!

Our favourite place for bread and sweet treats in the neighbourhood! Their brownies...

This Mabel's location is one of a number located in Toronto. This Roncesvalles location has been around for a long time and is a staple in the area for a reliable place to buy excellent bread, pastries, and premade meals. In the past I have shopped at Mabel's for a large variety of items and everything I have purchased has been excellent. I would, however, say that on some items, the price point is just a little bit high for my taste. On this day I ordered a Cortado and was extremely impressed with the quality of the coffee. Although this is not their main product line, they certainly produce a excellent cup of coffee to accompany any of their bakery items. The café uses Propeller coffee beans for their espresso and, in general, I find this coffee Roastery to produce beans which are slightly lighter and more fruity in profile than I prefer in my espresso base drinks. However, the Cortado I had here was extremely rich and chocolaty, a demonstration of the barista's abilities. There is a recently added area in the back of the store, which allows for an excellent location for coffee and a chat. There is limited outside seating by necessity of the small sidewalk space, but the café has managed to make the tables charming and welcoming. If you are looking for a well prepared bakery or savoury item to go with a great cup of coffee, Mabel's is an excellent stop in the roncesvalles area.

The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because head office (Fresh City) sent me a gift card. My horrible experience begins the day before Thanksgiving Day where I had picked up 2 pumpkin pies from Mabel's. On thanksgiving we noticed pie 1 had a hair and pie 2 was extremely cracked. The pie was not presentable and could not hold up when served. I visited the location and spoke to supervisor/manager(??) Jennifer who was extremely unprofessional, miserable and seemed like she did not want to be there. Very passive aggressive customer service and questioned all my concerns. When I presented my photos to her, she argued that this was something completely normal, that their pies often look like this - which was shocking. I will not be visiting this location again. I have added below a photo of the pumpkin pie that Mabel's had advertised on instagram - without any of their 'completely normal fissures' in the filling.
