I am absolutely appalled at the experience that I had at Matty's Patty's today.
I was recommended this place through a few locals throughout the couple of times I was in this area walking around, one of which pointed it out to me as I was sitting down beside the restaurant. I thought "Ah, what the hell? I'll give it a shot. What could go wrong?" which were my famous last words before entering this establishment.
I was greeted by a lovely gentleman who worked the front and he was rather nice, and I'll give it to them they have fantastic service. They were rather kind, and that I believe is one of their better qualities.
I had ordered a very simple single patty with a drink, and it came out to an exorbitant price of a little over $15 dollars. I was unbelievably shocked. But I chalked that up to the quality of the food, plus the service and what have you.
What was explained to me was that the patty was intended to be barebones. Just meat, cheese, sauce, bun. No fix-ins, no toppings, nothing. Which honestly, if you're going to do that, you really have to wow people with the ingredients you're working with.
When I received the food, I was excited to dig in. But to my surprise, when I took my first bite, I was met with an extremely mustard-forward bite which must have been the sauce. I could not taste much of anything else. It was bitter and pungent. I was incredibly disappointed, but thought to myself that it had to get better if I just continued. Again, famous last words. I finished the tiny sauce-slathered burger and my drink, and left feeling unsatisfied.
Some tips:
Allow people to customize their burgers with toppings. Yes, it's going to cost a fair bit more to get the other ingredients, time to prep and much more, but I think it's going to allow people to experience the burgers the way THEY like it, not how Matty likes it, thus making more profit.
Make the burgers more affordable and accessible for customers. I have been to several restaurants of varying quality, varying patty size and never have I paid $15 dollars for the absolute bare-minimum meal. I do understand that you do have to pay all your work staff a living wage, but the cost should not be passed on to the customer, but the people running the entire business, making hand over fist. But that's just my philosophy.
Dial back on the mustard in the burger sauce. Mustard is extremely pungent and bitter as a flavor profile, so if you make the burger sauce in-house, maybe experiment with the ratio a little bit so that other flavors shine a little more.
Overall, there is a fair bit of work to be done, but I think that it's possible to make a better experience. This, however, was just not one of them. Which is why I had to rate...

They have a ‘walk-up’ line, separate from their ‘pre-order’ line, where you DON’T have to order a combo. You can order just the burger(s).
This is “Matty’s Patty’s” NOT “Matty’s Fries.” Everyone going off about their fries end up with a bad taste in their mouth when leaving their review and completely take away from the star rating of the actual burgers themselves, as well as the fluidity of their orders/customer service. It’s tough navigating given the times, but they manage to make it work by minimizing confusion.
5/5 Ordered 3 double cheeseburgers with a different sauce on each one with bacon on one of them as well.
BURGER: They’re not suuuper thin in the way you’d expect a smash burger to be, but that’s the beautiful thing about them: they’re thick enough for you to be able to see some pink in the meat. And that’s where the juices are!
SAUCE: With regards to their sauces, the Matty Sauce left a lasting impression. It’s like a Mac sauce, but with bigger and better pickles! The acidity of the sauce and the pickles complement the meat very well. The spicy ketchup and the pickled mayo sauce have a teensy bit of kick to them, particularly the ketchup, but I think they’re at least worth trying out!
BUN: They use the classic sesame seed bun and it appears to either be slightly buttered/oiled when thrown on the flat top. Great colour on the inside and not suuuuper thick enough to ruin the meat:bread ratio.
** The price is hefty, even with just getting the burgers alone, but definitely worth trying! I’m definitely going back and I’d say they’re in contention with Rudy’s and Harry’s. And that alone speaks...

In a city brimming with culinary choices, I'm constantly on the hunt for those truly life-changing bites, and Matty's has been on my radar for a while. From the moment I walked in, the positive energy was palpable. The staff are genuinely happy to be there, and every single interaction, from ordering to receiving my food, was nothing short of fantastic. Their enthusiasm is infectious and truly adds to the overall experience.
And then there's the food. I opted for their classic cheeseburger, and boy, was I impressed. The patty itself was a masterpiece – perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy, and seasoned to perfection. The sauce was a delicious complement, but the real showstopper for me was the bread. Oh, that bread! Generously adorned with sesame seeds, it held everything together beautifully and added another layer of texture and flavour.
With every bite, I found myself getting a little bit sadder, knowing that this exceptional burger would soon be a delicious memory.
I absolutely cannot wait to go back and dive deeper into their menu, not just for the food, but also for another helping of those friendly faces. Matty's Patties delivers a top-notch burger that truly lives up to the standards of a city that deserves...
