Have wanted to try this place for so long! Another one on the list checked off!
Unfortunately, when I went about a couple months ago, only ice cream was available for my friend and no real toppings, which was a little disappointing.
However, I also wanted to try their chestnut cakes for awhile too! That did not disappoint at all. I loved the chestnut flavour as it was strong but wasnât overpowering!
The cream was nice and light, it thick enough to get some good textures. As well, the whipped cream was light and airy and complemented the entire cake.
Definitely recommend the cake, the hojicha soft serve was nice, but a little grainy. However, at the time it might not have been the season. I do still wanna try the other flavours of soft serve and hope that it will change my mind!
I gave this a four star rating, mostly for the cake and the service I received which was great! The girl was apologetic and wasnât her fault that the items were out of stock.
Will try again and maybe at the new location at yorkdale as this one is a little inconvenient without parking and hope the products are more available with it now being in season!

Read moreSharing a space with Konjiki Ramen, Saryo is a Japanese dessert spot for you to stop by before/after your ramen fix.
There isn't a lot of seating (read: a handful of barstools), nor much room for standing, while you wait for your order. The bright woodsy decor reminds me a lot of similar chains like Tsujiri.
My friend and I shared a tiny slice of the matcha "cheesecake" ($5.50 plus tax). Its texture was reminiscent of mousse (and strangely, shaving foam), rather than your regular, or even Japanese, cheesecake. The crust was quite good but a bit on the hard side. I later saw a tupperware chocked full of tiny slices (from a freezer, perhaps?) which may be the reason for the tough crust. The matcha flavour was quite good! Bitter and not too sweet.
Overall, I thought the menu options were a quite overpriced, considering a cone of soft serve was easily $5+. The staff are incredibly friendly but since there wasn't much seating, we walked over next door to Empress and finished the treat on a bench.
I wouldn't come out of my way to re-visit but wouldn't turn down a matcha soft serve if I was in the area.

If you're in the area looking for tasty, not overly sweetened (tea flavour) soft-serve, this is the place for you. (They also have cakes and brownies). Saryo, keep making your creations without using much sugar/sweeteners. TY.
Ordered:
Hojicha soft-serve in a cup ($5.50): I understand hojicha is roasted green tea leaves. If you enjoy deep earthy, smokey and toasty flavours, this is recommended for you. There is a hint of bitterness and at no point did I find it sweet.
Matcha soft-serve in a cone ($5.50): If you prefer more subtle flavours, this is recommended for you. Saryo definitely uses a lot of matcha in their soft-serve. If you're sharing both flavours, do start with the matcha because the hojicha will coat your palate with its depth of flavours and make you will no longer taste the matcha soft-serve.
The cone isn't special or freshly made. I prefer it in a cup.
Service was prompt as there were no customers when we arrived. However, when it gets busy, it may take 5 minutes to get your order. This is because they take their time to...
