Scarborough got a new addition to the food scene and it's smoked meat! The owner is from Montreal and apparently had worked at Schwartz prior to opening up shop here so he really knows his meat. I tried the Smoked Meat Sandwich ($8.99) Sumiliciousdeli which came piled with a very generous amount of meat (over two inches thick) between two pieces of bread and a dab of mustard. The smoked meat was well flavoured with a mix of lean and fatty meats. The lean parts were slightly dry but the fatty parts were phenomenal - melt in your mouth with the fat having almost a gelatin-like texture. Next time, I will definitely ask for more fatty meat on my sandwich. The bread is standard rye bread - nothing special and I would have liked to have a variety of mustard from which to choose from.
I also tried the Smoked Meat Poutine ($7.99) which, in my opinion, is superior to the Smoked Meat Sandwich and will completely tantalize your tastebuds with handcut fries, delicious gravy, torn chunks of mozzarella cheese and tonnes of smoked meat. I love how the smoked meat layer was so thick that it took some effort to dig past it and into the fries and cheese. I also loved how there was just the right amount of gravy so that every fry was perfectly coated with the rich gravy which is neither too savory or sweet, nor too thick or thin (most likely a 2/3 beef stock and 1/3 chicken stock mix). Unlike the Smoked Meat Sandwich, EVERY piece of smoked meat was hot, tender and juicy (as a result of the gravy) and I loved how the fatty bits of the meat actually started to dissolve into the poutine making it that much more indulgent. The fries were also great - golden fried to perfection with a crisp outside and soft and tender inside. The skin left on it gave it an added texture and flavour. The only critique I have is of the cheese - they were torn chunks of mozzarella instead of curds which meant that I missed out on chunks of that sqeeky goodness that is paramount to a good poutine. Nonetheless, it was still delicious - extremely melty and mixed in well with the gravy adding that much needed creaminess to the dish. I only wished was that there were a bit more cheese, but overall, this poutine was simply delightful. This will be my go to dish from here...
Read moreIf you think Canada and smoked meat, your mind goes straight to Montreal, and classic spots like Schwartz's and Reuben's. But thanks to Schwartz's alumni Sumith Fernando, quality smoked meat has found its way to the GTA!
The Sumilicious deli is located on the corner of Middlefield and Steeles. If you're stopping by for the first time, you're probably doing so to give their famous smoked meat sandwich a try, but this place is actually a deli too! You can grab smoked meat by the pound, brisket, karnatzel, turkey breast, mustard jars, pickles... you get the picture. For those of you stopping for just a meal though, there's a good amount of table seating if you want to eat in-store, or you can take it to go.
I walked into this experience with pretty heavy expectations. I have been to Montreal several times, and tried both Schwartz's and Reuben's several times. I don't care if it's blasphemy; Reuben's is better than Schwartz's. I have always found Schwartz's to be dry in comparison, no matter if I asked for extra fatty meat, or smothered my sandwich in yellow mustard. So Sumilicious had some work to do to turn my expectations around.
So how did they do? Sweet mother, they are doing things right over here in Ontario! Visually, the smoked meat sandwich looks just about the same as that from its Montreal counterpart, but holy moisture Batman! That sandwich needed no help in keeping my spirits high and mouth not parched. And don't get me started on the flavour! That good girl hit the spot! The sandwich combo comes with a large pickle, coleslaw, and fries. I've got no clue how the combo is served in Montreal, but I loved these simple sides. Those juicy pickles are obviously not grocery store pickles, and the coleslaw deserves a shout out since I would guess they make it in house. It has that beautiful balance of vinegary-sweet flavour, without the needless creaminess of your typical Costco slaw.
I am so happy for the city that Sumith decided to grace us with his passion. Save yourself the gas money and five hour drive, and just head over to Sumilicious. I don't know if Reuben's or Sumilicious has a better smoked meat sandwich, but who cares. This...

We were curious about this resto since it opened, and one of my friends (who is also a yelper) beat my wife and I to this resto. They claimed they were stuffed with 2 dishes ordered and spending only $20 CAD. They had ordered a smoked meat sammich (sandwich) and smoked meat poutine. Oddly enough my friend also has to deal with Gout and beef is one of his triggers, so I am surprised he didn't complain about any pain the following day. Unless he had his gout meds with him the day he went with his SO.
As for my visit with my wife the experience was more of a mixed bag. Since the smoked meat offerings are beef, we had to avoid that due to me not wanting to be in pain with Gout the next day. So we ended up ordering their chicken offering which was a Grilled Chicken sammich (sandwich) and regular poutine which my wife and I shared equally. Note for those with Gout, their gravy is beef based, so be careful. Their fries are prepared and cooked in house, not frozen, they kinda reminded me of Swiss Chalet fries honestly. Their grilled chicken sandwich has a slight spicy kick to it, not enough to make one hunt for a tall glass of milk tho.
Oh for those of you that enjoy Cole Slaw, if you like your coleslaw creamy, avoid their coleslaw it is more on the vinegary side. Also, for those looking for a pork offering, look somewhere else since this resto is Halal.
Now as to value for money spent. This is where it kinda got me, the grilled chicken sandwich was $9 before HST. This seems to be a bit steep for a chicken sandwich, tho in its' defense it had equivalent of like 2 whole chicken breasts on the sandwich. Also a not for those with Gout, the only veggie they put on their Grilled Chicken sandwich is cabbage, which my wife scraped off since she noticed it before I did. For the same price range tho one could enjoy a Subway Oven Roasted Chicken foot long sub and have more veggie options.
Worth repeat visit. Hmm...perhaps maybe for the home cut fries ($2.99). I'm on the fence to be honest with the Grilled Chicken Sandwich if I were to order it again.
This resto is not what I would consider a...
