A Japanese-owned fish shop and you bet their sashimis are fresh as hell! Top quality in Toronto. I ordered the premium nigiri set for $48 on the spot and wait time was around 15-20. I loved the premium set, if you’re hungry, I don’t think it’s a shareable box even though that’s what the store suggested. I shared the box with my brother and it was more of a snack for us if anything. The line up to get in the store felt somewhat long because customers weren’t allowed to go in even if they see someone walk out. The store has a policy where a staff member has to bring you in so customers in the store can still maintain social distancing. Given limited capacity and their store is not big, I totally agree with their protocol. I thought it was also a smart idea to put a huge sign outside of their store explaining that. Other than fresh sashimi, uni and frozen goods (icecream, frozen ikura, different types of fish), Taro also offers Made in Japan goods- Japanese soya sauce, soba sauce, ramen brands that are hard to find in other supermarkets. Overall, friendly staff! I love how they have a good ordering system going. People who paid or pre-ordered had a line outside and walk-ins had a different line. It was a smooth transaction from the moment I lined up to cash out. Very organized.

Their quality and services were not as good as they were. Got this King salmon in a pack and have them sliced for me. It looks really good before I picked them up. You can clearly see the before and after. The chef was new and the lady manger was at his back to guide him. I didn’t see how he sliced the sashimi but if I have known that is what I got, I would have refused. I understand there might be bones in the salmon. But that’s kinda false presentation, no? Just because you laid in a perfect way, it doesn’t hide how it was to me when I eat it. I would not expect that at Taro Fish so I’m pretty disappointed. Went back there the next week and order some more sashimi. When I mentioned to the cashier, he passed the message to the older Chinese chef. He said the sashimi was not gone bad. Excuse me, I never said the sashimi gone bad. Please do not put your words into my mouth. All I was saying is that if I knew there was bones in the sashimi and the way of your cutting will be that bad, I might have change to a difference piece. He was trying to change the subject when he saw the pictures. The lady (might be the manager) simply said it is how it is. If you want, we can show you how we sliced next time If that’s how you do business, fine. I’m not sure if I will visit again.

I've always wanted to try this little gem. There is a small shared parking lot with other patron of the small plaza. Since today is Valentine's day why not give myself a good reason to stop in and see what all the fuss is about. Since it is Valentine's day I wasn't expecting a huge selection of fish since I arrived sort of late around 4:00pm.

First off like I said parking lot is small so I was lucky enough to score a spot right away when I pulled into the plaza. I stepped inside and was wowed by how roomy and big it actually was inside, from the outside I thought it was going to be a small cramped market but I was wrong.

There are a few fridges lined up against the wall and some freezers in the center of the store, on the opposite side is the sushi bar and fresh fish area. I immediately walked to he fridge to see what kind of fish is left for my choosing. I picked up the basket and started to fill it with fresh BC uni, salmon from Ireland, blue fin tuna, large shrimps, and a white fish from Greece. I'm sure if it wasn't for Valentine's day there may be even more selection of fish.

Once you've selected your seafood of choice you line up and see what the damages are, once you've settled up with the cashier all you need to do is tell them to slice it for you. The cashier brings your seafood over to the chef and he starts to slice and plate your selection for you to enjoy at home. It took about 15min after the cashier brought it over to the chef to wait in queue. They will also give you a small bag of ice for you to keep your food cold while it is being transported home.

If sushi and maki's are your thing you need to order at the sushi bar and then tell the cashier your order. I placed an order of 2 for ikura sushi which is salmon roe.

Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. This will definitely not be my...

New review: I was shocked at the service/experience I encountered today. I got mochi and sashimi, and they helped me slice it, I paid to add on rice. On my commute back home I realized they forgot to give me the rice. So I commuted back to the store and politely asked about it, all smiles, nothing hostile. The cashier then gave me the rice. The boss lady and I smiled at each other as I left. As I walked out the door already, the cashier ran and chased after me, making a debacle as if chasing after a thief: “Miss! Miss! I just want to check that there is no rice under the sashimi. I thought I saw something under the sashimi.” I opened the bag for him to inspect, where he saw that it was the mochi that I bought. No rice. I’m shocked at how they chose to handle this. Not only was there no apology for forgetting the rice, or the inconvenience for the customer to come back to the store, he’s even publicly running after me as if I’m stealing or lying. All this for a bowl of rice??? Even if he thought I made a mistake, and even if he was worried he gave me an extra bowl of rice, is it really necessary to be running after me at the door to check my bag like a thief? Again, it’s a bowl of rice. I hope this experience is just a lack of training and one time. I’ve visited previous times and they’ve been friendly. But it feels terrible as a customer to be accused as a thief like that.

Original review: Freshest sashimi in the GTA especially the scallops and bluefin tuna (otoro). Not cheap but worth every penny. When you pay ask them to slice it for you. You can also order nigiri sushi a la carte if buying the large pieces in bulk is too much in portion. Just know the chef goes on lunch break 1230-130 so no sushi made during that...

Quaint, little Japanese fish market/store tucked into a little strip mall just off of Finch. This store also sells packaged Japanese goods and snacks that one would find in Japan or at least harder to do so here. The highlight is the in store fish cutting services available to customers who buy their slabs of sashimi grade fish. Tuna (chutoro, o'toro), salmon, sea bream, etc. are all available for you to peruse through and select for your own sashimi platter build OR you can pick one of their prebuilt platters to take home. We opted for a prebuilt sashimi AND one of the Chirashi (fish on top of sushi rice) dishes. The fish in the sashimi was of top notch freshness and great quality. Included was scallop, prawn and uni. The first two were phenomenal but the uni was slightly weak. Still good but any more time and it would be on the dangerous, razor thin precipice that uni tends to be between good and bad. Stealing the show however, was the Chirashi (fish on top of sushi rice). Unlike other Chirashi I've had, this was rice with a layer of minced salmon, a healthy scoop of minced tuna and a whole scallop plus a slice of octopus. To my surprise, the tuna mince was seasoned amazingly well: a touch of sweetness and savory in the dressing. The salmon appeared to be slightly dressed as well. If it weren't for us having salmon sashimi earlier, I would have thought the flavour was just the fish. Props to the chef who opted for the mince route. This was the best Chirashi I've ever had. Accepts debit or credit. NO CASH due to Covid policy. Parking is tight as the strip mall only has 25-30 spots for seven stores...
