I do not even know where to start with this bar, because it is so much more than that. I was so suprised after the second time I went that the bartender, Kevin, who is such an amazing guy remembered my name. He always talks to me, spends time catching up, and always strikes up such interesting conversations that I can relate to. Such a sweetheart. On top of that, Scott, who greeted me everytime I have been there has also remembered me and always makes a point to say hi and ask how I am. It transcends doing your job when you care more about your guests experience to the point where they become friends. I also discovered my favourite whiskey there (Writer's Tears) and Kevin (he is the only bartender I have encountered so far) is very patient and knowledgeable when it comes to drinks. I asked him for something exciting and new and produced an fun drink I thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere is so open and friendly as well. At night, a tealight is lit on each table that creates an intimate atmosphere. There is a downstairs as well, and a window that opens right up at the front of the bar, which is nice in the summer. They have movies playing always (Superbad was playing last time I went) and music that is not too loud either (it is usually classic rock, the best kind). It is right on Bloor so there are lots of late night eats around there too, if the kitchen is already closed. I am not sure how to say it, but it just feels so homey, friendly, and welcoming. I have talked to more random people at this bar than in Toronto generally, and every one has been respectful and not creepy. Their drinks are reasonably priced, and even when I have a decent amount of drinks I am always happy with the bill. Thank you. My number one bar in all of Toronto and will forever go out of my way...
Read moreMy sister and our friend went to the lab last night and I can easily say it was the worst bar experience I've ever had. My sister and our friend arrived before me and the bouncer told them they weren't allowed in for no reason at all. When I arrived we went up to talk to him again and he tells me to wait and grabs who I assume is the manager, (he didn't tell us who he was.) He then goes on to tell us we appeared to have to much "fun" tonight and they have cheap drinks so we can't go in. We try to explain to him that we had just come from the Danny Brown concert and wanted to visit our cousin who was inside The Lab. It was 1am and none of us had had a drink since before the concert at 8.
My sister explained to the manager that I wasn't with them earlier so he lets just me in. This was ridiculous because he clearly had no idea the situation since he was just trying to tell me that I had too much "fun" as well. I went in to tell my cousin we were leaving and left with my sister and our friend.
My sister later tells me when she and our friend were walking up to the bar they were talking about her scholarship for school that she received for being a Metis woman in university. As they walked up the bouncer just started saying no. Therefore the only reason it seems they didn't let us in was because we are aboriginal women.
I'm horrified with the staff of this establishment and the fact that they wouldn't let three calm and polite women in because of their race. I would not recommend supporting...
Read moreWent with my friend. The garlic bread was delicious, the onion rings were awful. I could not finish eating one. I returned my onion rings and the barman said "ok". Later on, I passed in front of my onion rings again and half of it was eaten. Yes I paid for it.
The comedy club. It's in a small basement. It can get crowded and it feels like it would be nice to have more air circulation after an hour or so. However, the comedians were funny and chill ... At the beginning. Then the presenter left and another one came to replace him and that's when everything went down. The new presenter was obviously not prepared. He kept on looking at the time and complain that he has another 2 minutes to fill but clearly nothing to say. It was soporific. Half of the public left and new comedians are being called. Unfortunately, for some reason the crowd was not as enthusiastic anymore and each comedian kept pressuring us to laugh. News flash, we can enjoy a show without laughing out loud. But hearing each comedian complaining about how the public is "dead" was killing the entire vybe. When one comedian started threatening the public to lock us in and beat us up for not laughing enough, I think this was my...
