I don't even know where to start on this one. My visit to this place was REALLY disappointing.
I stopped in to grab some pies before returning to New York City. I had read about this on several lists of food options in the Kensington Market Area. I walked in just as a customer had finished paying for their items so essentially I became the first person on line. I thought things would go quickly but as the minutes ticked by and a line formed behind me, I realized none of the FIVE (5) people behind the counter were going to acknowledge the line of people forming. Consider the fact that I stand at 6'4 and I was wearing a red shirt.
Being at the head of the line I decided it was up to me to address the lack of situational awareness. I asked a gentleman if there was anyone assisting customers at the register. He said he would help but his body language was lackluster and he didn't move with urgency. On top of that, I had to repeat my order for three (3) individual slices to him. I paid with cash, which they didn't have change for and went on my way. (I had to apologize to a friend that was waiting for me in the car).
Imagine my deep dismay when I opened one of the pie containers and immediately spotted MOLD on the pie slice (See pictures). I could not believe it. I replayed the events in my head and remember the gentleman replacing a display slice after packaging my slices. Could he have placed a display slice into my cartons by accident? The New Yorker in me can think of an even worse scenario but ethically I can't describe that scenario because I don't have any proof.
All I can say, with definitive proof is that the service was unacceptably slow considering that amount of staff at hand. In addition the food (pies at least) are not safe to eat.
I'm hoping to revisit Toronto soon. I'll be passing by again to see if this was an aberration or a symptom of deep problems at this establishment. If you visit, "May the odds be ever in...
Read moreMy friend and I came by this restaurant for lunch on Wed July 28 and have the following comments for you. We really hope you will see the value in our feedback and use it for staff training, learning and improvement.
When we came in, it was just the 2 of us and 2 more customers behind us. Because of poor service and long wait times, the other 2 customers left; we chose to stay. A long time passed before we were even acknowledged. In fact, we were never properly acknowledged, not even in the simplest way. The 2 guys/employees behind the counter seemed to be so busy: one doing something in the back and occasionally re-appearing behind the counter; the other was making a sandwich and never raised his eyes to us to welcome us and apologize for the long delay. When we finally requested some service, it was slow and unenthusiastic. The employee attempted to over-charge my friend for his quiche and salad - instead of offering him the $11.25 combo, he went ahead and tried to charge him $17, motivating that he thought it was for the large size salad; my friend had to correct him My friend and I both noticed two flies, landing on the salads in the display; when we drew the employee’s attention to this fact, his reply was word by word: “I can’t help it”; needless to add, he didn’t do anything about it.
The good part was that the food was acceptable, except for the fly incident, as we may have ingested some fly eggs ourselves.
The real point of this feedback is to: draw your attention to the poor customer service skills of your staff; we really believe that some training for basic courtesy and good customer service skills are desperately needed for your staff sound an alarm for the urgent need for cleanliness and solid food hygiene practices as the employee’s disinterested attitude toward good health and safety measures - see the flies - was absolutely scary and shocking.
My friend and I hope this...
Read moreLocated at the Northeast corner of Augusta and Oxford in the heart of the Kensington Market, this well known Toronto establishment is an anchor among the eclectic, and a favorite of pie aficionados alike.
The place has an old country kitchen charm about it. The kind of place you wish was more convenient when you drive almost an hour to get there with traffic.
We arrived just before closing and many of the pies had already been purchased for the day, as they only had a few left that we saw, which is a very promising sign.
Everything looked delicious, but also looked like it was hand made. There were no perfect crusts, pies were overflowing with fillling. The was absolutely no evidence of commercial involvement in the process, which was fantastic.
We were so excited to find a "Wild Blueberry Pie" that we were pretty sure it wasn't going to make it home for dessert last night.
The prices were slightly above what one might find at say a Dominion or a Loblaws,, but with hand-made pies, you have to expect this.
I found the pie to be inherently flavorful, it was NOT overly sweet, and had real berries in it...not just berry paste or compote. The crust was flaky and buttery and also not overly sweet. It probably ranked IMHO as one of the Top 3 Blueberry pies I've ever eaten.
The staff of the store were very pleasant and helpful.
We will ABSOLUTELY be back!
This place is a must visit.
Visited again on Halloween of 2020. The line was quite literally around the corner. Social distancing is being well managed.
Huge selection of delicious pies to choose from. We ordered a Key Lime and a Wild Blueberry. Both were excellent. The price point is high, but so was the QUALITY. A...
