China Diner Sylvan Lake — Restaurant in Town of Sylvan Lake

I gave China Diner a try last night and unfortunately the experience matched what I had heard about the place. I placed a simple order for pick up ordering off their online menu. This took a while as the person on the phone obviously was not familiar with the menu. The staff was friendly and the place looked fairly clean although dated but the food was not good at all. I had ordered Ginger Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork, both items were absolutely covered in thick batter and aside from the lousy sauces I could not tell one meat from the other. The Szechuan noodles were overcooked and completely without flavour. I rated the food 2 out of 5 because it was bad but didn't actually make me sick. Seriously the Ginger Chicken and Sweat & Sour pork are better at Sobeys. I also found the food to be over priced given it's quality which is lower then you would find in a mall food court. Friends told me this place was bad but I had a craving and they are the only Chinese food...

As a 25+ year resident of Sylvan Lake, this place has been my “go to” restaurant for Chinese Western food. Under current ownership, however, I am absolutely done with it. This past visit, #4 with new owners, was my last. I wanted to believe it was simply growing pains. At first it was “Your order will be ready for pick up in 15-20 minutes”…fast forward 75 minutes later, and I’m standing around 10+ disgruntled patrons. And yes, the menu is still the same, but it sure doesn’t taste the same. Dry ribs were excessively salty, bordering on inedible. The Ginger beef is battered to the point of a criminal offence, and the sauce is indeed gingery, IF you’re lucky to find any on your plate. STALE, RAW OR OVERCOOKED, TASTED OLD WITH SUBSTITUTING INGREDIENTS We had a take out order of $132 from china diner tonight. A place that we have enjoyed since moving to sylvan years ago. Sadly tonight’s order didn’t include a single edible dish. All deep fried items were overcooked while all vegetables were raw. The rice was a brown rice not white, the noodles and soups tastes like they’d been sitting for days. I called to discuss the matter but the lady answering the phone spoke very poor English and understood even less so I eventually stopped repeating myself and gave up.
