This place has the best melon pans I've ever had in BC.
Everything about the melon pan is perfect. The crust on top is crunchy thick and not too sweet. The bread is a classic japanese bun. Side note: crust is flavoured usually corresponding to the flavours inside.
Cream inside is probably what sets it apart from other melon pans. There is mochi seamlessly combined with custard cream which is expertly flavored. They have matcha, chocolate, European cream, pumpkin, London Fog, sesame, Yuzu cheesecake flavors. They also have special flavors depending on the season. The sugar they use is extraaa sparkly.
The great thing about this place is that it's a bakery and they bake all the buns in-house. Don't expect the Buns to be warm or straight out the oven however, since most of the buns they sell have been cooled down to room temperature. They do not reheat or toast for you.
they have a drink menu as well thier matcha latte is quite delicious and has a strong matcha flavor (Not creamy, but strong).
They have free Wi-Fi here and they have desk, chairs and benches. There is probably two or three outlets that you could use in the entire Bakery. People study here.
the decor is really nice they have a mural that has a super cute dog image.
the biggest con with this Bakery is that it SEEMS to have poor ventilation, so for some reason it gets really really hot and stuffy. Or maybe it's some other reason but it can get stuffy. ??? Idk.
Another con is at its gets very loud I'm not sure if it's due to the conversations of certain people or if it's because noise is amplified. but compared to other cafes and bakeries and coffee shops it was very loud. I had my earphones in with music playing but it was still too hard for me to get any work done (I'm the type that usually get work done in slightly noisy cafes).
Street parking. Walkable from bus.
**Update they re did some interiors and the decor looks much better and modern! Beautiful wooden accents and origami cranes. A trendy spot for young people. It's still not well ventilated and hot sometimes ..... Maybe when the ovens on to bake the big batches??
They offer more savoury items like chicken banh mi. The bread and flavours vary based on who's preparing it! Inconsistencies pull it down a star as sometimes the bread is fresh and crispy and soft and other times it's over toasted and hard which reduces the chewiness of french -viet baguettes. The soy sauce is a little garlicky. I'm pretty disappointed that none of my banh mi has pate and jalapenos! Also they forget to add cucumbers sometimes..... So some banh mi have no cucmbers. ): Sometimes if I ask they will add jalapenos in but if I forget then there's none. Skimpy on the toppings. There's like 1 cilantro stem.
Prices of macaroons kinda high. Cakes taste great, better than Becca...
Read moreMy experience at Broyé cafe was awful. Will never be going back. Would not recommend to anyone unless you have plenty of spare time to wait around to get one average sandwich and a drink. I arrived with 3 friends just after opening on a Saturday (arrived 9:10 am, opened 9 am). We placed our order at 9:15 to go. We each ordered one drink and a food item + 2 croissants. First of all, the person at the till could not seem to understand our order and we had to repeat and correct multiple times. Then when they actually went to fill the order, it took until 9:57 (ALMOST 45 MINUTES) for them to complete our TO GO order. They wouldn't even have completed the order if it weren't for me going up to the counter and frequently reminding them that I have not yet received my full order. They completely forgot a drink and a sandwich. We ended up being 20 minutes late to our appointment. This is a cafe, not a fine dining establishment where I expect to wait long for my food.
To make matters worse, I politely inquired about my missing breakfast sandwich when my friend reminded them of her missing drink and was told that my sandwich was on the grill and should be out shortly. 10 minutes later, still no sandwich. I go back to ask about my sandwich and they tell me again it's on the grill. I then see them go back and START MAKING THE SANDWICH. So they just straight up lied the first time about my sandwich being on the grill then again FORGOT about the sandwich entirely. Due to the fact that the sandwich was rushed, the actual sandwich was awful. The bread was cold and hard. The sandwich clearly was not placed on the grill for long enough.
The place is known for moissants (mochi filled croissant which also somehow took 35 minutes to come out) but these were nothing special. They just tasted like a cream filled croissant with minimal mochi inside.
The organization and procedures of this place were clearly abysmal. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and nothing was out. The employees then proceeded to slowly bring out pastries to fill the display rather than completing the 4 pending orders from customers waiting. If your cafe is not actually ready for customers by 9 am, DON'T OPEN AT 9 AM.
Unless you want to wait 45 minutes for mediocore cafe food and drinks, I'd consider going elsewhere. Oh an in order to get your food within 45 minutes, you have to repeatedly remind them of what...
Read moreI used to really like this place when it was Baker & Table (a Japanese bakery cafe), but I hadn't visited in a long time since I no longer have appointments in the area. The business has been Broyé for a few years now I think, and offers the same tasty and cute Japanese baked goods from Baker & Table, plus now banh mi and an expanded drink menu featuring Vietnamese drinks. This fusion of food cultures is very unique, and it's cool to have a place to enjoy these different foods under one roof! I was curious about what Broyé is doing so I took the chance to come out and visit them again on my free day. The atmosphere is a little different than I remember from the Baker & Table days, most noticeably, it's way busier! I was there about 2-3 on a Saturday, and I thought I would've missed the lunch rush, but still every table was full when I got there! Luckily one opened up for me while I was waiting for my order. They still had most of their baked good selection available though. The interior also got upgraded. There's now a plant feature on one of the walls and lots of plants scattered around the cafe, a pretty mural on another wall, and paper cranes hanging from the ceiling, which they apparently folded themselves in acknowledgement of the Japanese tradition/legend of folding 1000 paper cranes to make a wish come true. Cool! I got: vegan lemongrass chicken banh mi, ubemisu, and thai green iced tea with coconut jelly. The "ubemisu" (ube tiramisu) met my expectations from how I remembered Baker & Table's treats. The thick ube cream had a lovely flavour and coupled with soft and fluffy cake layers for a very satisfying dessert. I was really happy too with the new Vietnamese offerings! The banh mi was delicious - the vegan chicken was nice and tender and the sauce was super flavourful. Just the right proportions of everything too, so it wasn't messy. The Thai green tea was rather sweet but also had a nice depth of flavour. I got it with coconut jelly which enhanced it well. Don't remember the exact price breakdown but my total was $23, which I think was fair. The only thing that is really left to be desired here is that they don’t have glasses/mugs for the larger hot or cold drinks, only plastic. More vegan options for desserts would...
