I am shocked, disappointed and put off by Sal y Limon tonight. We have been eating and recommending their food for years! Introduced at least 10 friends to it. Supported them during COVID by ordering and driving across town to their take out window, and tonight, they not only let me down, I had to compost nearly one half of my Barbacoa burrito.
I took my son for a late lunch, and really enjoyed the first half of my Barbacoa burrito -my favourite thing on their menu, having tried almost everything. I took half the burrito home, it was too big! Planned to eat it for dinner. I was so excited to finish it hours later... I took a bite down, and my tooth hit a bone! A bone! I have NEVER encountered a bone in my lamb barbacoa. I thought it was a mistake, but pulled it out of my mouth. I was sure it was a "one of" and there would be no further bones. So I took two more bites, and on bite 3 felt a sharp STAB! Surprisingly, 2 more sharp bones. I was gagging. I couldn't eat any more. Most of it remained. So disappointing.
So I called Sal Y Limon, and asked to speak with a Manager. He told me it was normal, that another customer complained about it YESTERDAY. How does that make me feel any better? And why isn't there at least a liability disclaimer on your restaurant wall ANYWHERE that says not to be surprised if you get bones in your barbacoa order? If I had kept my receipt I would have filed a formal complaint. Hundreds and hundreds of dollars spent at Sal Y Limon, and now all I can associate with them is gagging on a sharp little bone, too big to swallow, small enough to get caught in my throat. And the Manager's response was the worst of all - it's normal.
Boo Sal Y Limon, boo Manager. In these times with people unemployed and the cost of groceries inflated, eating out is a real treat. Lunch for 2 people with tip was $50 - I...
Read moreI had such high hopes for Sal y Limon, but my recent experiences have been nothing short of disappointing. I will be reviewing specifically their burritos, as I consider their tacos might be a better option after my last experience.
I used to be a huge fan of this restaurant about 5-8 years ago, and I used to sing its praises to all my friends and family, proudly declaring it as a true Mexican gem in Vancouver.
However, things have changed drastically since then. I moved back to the neighborhood recently and was excited to be close to one of my old favorites. The service was still friendly, and the staff seemed genuinely welcoming, which makes me think the issues aren't entirely up to them.
But the reality is that the food quality and overall experience at Sal y Limon have declined significantly. I decided to give them a second chance, going two nights in a row, hoping the first experience was just a fluke.
Sadly, it was even worse the second time around. I ordered a burrito that was not only overpriced but also comprised mainly of cabbage with just a hint of anything else. To top it off, I was charged for guacamole that I never received. Calling it the worst burrito I've ever had would be an understatement.
I can't, in good conscience, recommend anyone to dine here, despite the positive reviews they might have accumulated. Save your hard-earned money and head to Taco Bell or any junk fast-food joint for a much more satisfying and wallet-friendly burrito. This place is a far cry from the authentic Mexican experience it once...
Read moreThis used to be my go-to place for a good burrito, but unfortunately I have to take it off my list.
This was the first time I've been back here since the start of the pandemic, and we were very disappointed. Prices went way up, burrito size went way down, and the flavor was pretty bland for both of our burritos. The burritos weren't bad per se, but definitely not worth going across town for, and in my opinion not worth the high price tag anymore. The 3$ guacamole is just their fresh salsa that comes for free (60% onion, 30% tomato, 10% herbs) with a water-down quarter avocado mixed into it. Don't bother with it.
Adding salt to injury, the service was very sub-par. We're two years into a pandemic and they still haven't figured out their system: cashier is masked and behind a big plexiglass window (which is great!), but with the music and the loud restaurant environment (despite having limited sitting), we were struggling to understand each other. We specifically asked not to have any jalapenos and both found a bunch in our burritos. My partner asked how spicy the Super Marinera was, cashier said they could make it non-spicy, but the burrito ended up being almost un-eatable. We don't have huge spice tolerance, but we can handle a little heat, and this was very far from mild.
So tldr: not sure if management changed at some point in the past two years, but they definitely banked on their early success (which was well deserved) by jacking up the prices and cutting cost wherever they could. I can't recommend this place anymore, which...
