From the moment you step into Hyderabad Biryani House on Fraser Street, you know you’re in for something special. Tucked into a humble storefront with modest décor, this restaurant doesn’t rely on flashy presentation — it lets the food speak for itself. And speak it does — loudly, richly, and fragrantly, with every bite transporting you to the bustling lanes of Hyderabad.
I first visited this restaurant on a friend’s recommendation, specifically for their famed Hyderabadi Goat Dum Biryani. As someone who has eaten biryani across India and abroad, I can confidently say this ranks among the most authentic I’ve ever had in North America. The rice is perfectly cooked, each grain fluffy and infused with saffron, rose water, and the unmistakable depth of slow-cooked spices. The goat meat? Succulent, bone-tender, and marinated through to the center. This isn’t just food — it’s a culinary experience steeped in heritage.
What truly sets this biryani apart is its dum style — cooked traditionally, sealed, and steamed to lock in flavor. It arrives in a clay pot, steaming and aromatic, and when you lift that first spoonful, the layers of flavour become immediately apparent. The portion sizes are generous (easily feeds two hungry diners), and the price point is incredibly reasonable given the quality and quantity.
But the magic doesn’t end with the biryani. I’ve since returned multiple times and tried a wide array of dishes — Butter Chicken that’s creamy and tangy with just the right hint of smokiness; Chicken 65 that bursts with South Indian spice; a comforting Dal Tadka that tastes like home-cooked goodness; and their Mirchi Ka Salan, which is hands down the best I’ve had in Canada. Each dish is crafted with care and authenticity, avoiding the over-commercialized blandness that plagues many other Indian restaurants in the city.
The service is warm and personable. On each visit, I’ve been greeted with a smile and helped with recommendations. You can tell the staff take pride in the food they’re serving. They’re happy to adjust spice levels to your preference, explain unfamiliar items, and ensure you feel welcomed — whether you’re South Asian and missing the taste of home, or a curious newcomer diving into Indian cuisine for the first time.
The ambiance is simple but comforting. Bollywood music hums softly in the background, families gather around large platters of food, and there’s an unspoken sense of community in the air. It’s the kind of place where you’re just as likely to see an auntie from Hyderabad as you are a group of local foodies. And that says something about how well the restaurant has earned its reputation.
One small note: the restaurant can get quite busy during peak dinner hours, so if you’re planning to dine in on a weekend, try to come early or be patient with wait times — it’s worth it. They also offer takeout, and their packaging is solid, ensuring everything arrives fresh and hot.
In a city like Vancouver, where good Indian food can sometimes lean too heavily on Western adaptations, Hyderabad Biryani House is a refreshing, much-needed beacon of authenticity. It’s clear that their goal isn’t just to sell food — it’s to share a culture, a memory, and a story through every plate.
Final thoughts: Whether you’re craving the comfort of biryani, the fiery warmth of Andhra spices, or just a meal that satisfies both the stomach and the soul, this is the place to go. It’s more than a restaurant — it’s a tribute to...

Read moreWe tried them for the first time and tried to go as a walk in customer (3 people) and were asked if we had a reservation and we did not have one but the team sat us kindly at a big table in the middle.
The chairs were very heavy and difficult to move and if you came close to the table, you would bump your knee hard on the metal frame of the table...To the owners / chefs, you may need to look at that because the sofa kind of chairs at a table are not comfy to eat at....
I am not dissing the restaurant on this but if you are not comfortable at your dining table, how do you enjoy your meal ?
We ordered an appetizer of 12 pieces of pani puri and got a very small container of veggie mix to put in the pani puri, just enough for 4 pani puris and took the rest of the 8 home...The sauce with it was amazing but the pani (Green) was for like 30 to 40 pani puris, so I wish they would give enough of the veggie mx to put in the 12 pani puri we ordered.
We ordered two dishes, the prawn curry with 2 garlic naans and a chicken dum biriyani.
The prawn curry with the garlic naan was amazing but I have to mention a little disappointment with the biriyani.
I scooped out six spoons from the bowl and only got rice and no chicken to then realise that there were only 2 pieces of drumsticks in the biriyani...
I have had many biriyanis in the past at different restaurants and this left me scratching my head because a dish work at least $ 15 plus and has 80 % rice and 20 % chicken is not what I was expecting of a biriyani.
Maybe this is the restaurant portioning their food but when I hear chicken biriyani, I expect rice and chicken with flavour and I got the rice and flavour but felt shortchanged on the chicken.
I ordered a sprite before ordering off the menu, but it never arrived and I am happy I was not charged on my bill.
I am stating this as if Hydrebad Biriyani is new to the street, you cannot ignore a customer request if you want more business or if your servers cannot remember, write it on a note pad so you don't forget.
We ended the night with the most AMAZING mango lassi so keep that up as I will return for that.
I will also return with my family for the flavour but will be hesitant to order the biriyani again.
I need the owners and chefs to look into this.
Again I don't want the restaurant to look bad, but this review is to help them improve what I felt was wrong.
Other than that, thank you for a tasty meal. We will return for the goat and prawn...
