My wife, daughter & me went to Burgoo (Main Street) again yesterday for an evening meal. We are Vegetarians. Burgoo has a " limited Vegetarian Menu", though the staff willing to substitute the meat with cheese or some vegetables. We ordered 2 x Eggplant Parmigiana Sandwiches, 1 x Gooey Cheese grill, I x fondue & 1 ice cream with chocolate pudding. The Eggplant Sandwiches come with Soup or Salad. (We opted for Mushroom & Tomato soups). All the dishes were good, tasty & soothing. One of the main factors that enhances the taste of the food are the Jamaican Moutaka Hot Sauce , Choula Chilli Sauce & Tomato Ketchup respectively. The Sauces are served by the bottle & not " the cheap way of dishing out packets or in small plastic containers" . The place is lively ,cozy & gives a nice feeling . Service was excellent ! The toilets were very clean & well maintained.
The place deserves a visit by those seeking good ambience & comfort food. would however like to suggest that the Restaurant add more Vegetarian items, add "french fries" to their Sandwiches as part of the meal & indicate the Vegetarian dishes with "V" symbol on side in Green for easy identification. The Clientele too were of a better Class than the usual modern types. Overall a good satisfying experience.
My family & me visited this place yesterday (7 th April'24) for Dinner. We had No Reservations & had to wait 75 minutes for a Table! We are vegetarians & had the Soup & Sandwich Combo, the Grilled Gooey Cheese, Fruit & Bread Fondue, Mac & Cheese & Banana Choc Pudding. All he dishes were excellent in taste..though pricey & one wonders why Veg dishes cost same or more than Non Veg items! The Soup & Sandwich set should have some french fties or a salad added..if choosing Veg option..so the meal is made more fulfilling. One of the important items..which enhanced the taste of the foods were the HOT Mautauka & Calypso Sauces. These were served in bittles- NOT some cheap plastic 8 gms packets! Further it is heartening tgat Burgoo has these great sauces to give the " lip smacking" taste! Service was excellent, Staff great & Toilets Clean & Dry! It is suggested tht the Owners introduce a few more Veg dishes & serve tge Sandwiches with fries & lastly indicate prominently..the Veg items on the menu card. Overall a most satisfying experience..recommended for all...
Read moreFirst off, everyone from our hostess to our server were amazing. We had a group of 8 and despite it being super busy and our group trickling in slowly after our booked time, they did everything they could to accommodate us. Sadly, I couldn't get our hostess' name (you're amazing). But our server, Sidney, definitely helped earn the auto gratuity (for groups of 8+) and more. She was knowledgeable, super patient genial in the warmest, most sincere way. Really made us all feel welcomed and at home. She introduced herself and explained the menu in a way that left a great impression of not only the restaurant but herself and made the menu way less overwhelming. Everything she described and recommended was top notch--she was even considerate enough to add little disclaimers (the Moscow Mules were "spicy" but deliciously so) and ask edus about our food preferences or restrictions.
The food and drinks spoke for themselves though. I ordered Jambalaya with chicken, sausage and basmati rice, along with a herbed biscuit to soak up all the wonderful sauce (our server's suggestion) and a Moscow mule. The jambalaya was fantastic, so flavourful and full of spice and the ratio of meat and rice was 2:1. They definitely didn't cheap out on the portioning. Chicken was tender and the smoke sausage still have the perfect bite in the casing, like it was just off the bbq. Biscuit was fluffy and warm and the perfect buttery sponge for the sauce. I've tried a few Moscow Mules around Vancouver and the one here is definitely the best so far, no competition. There was a wonderful spiciness to the ginger beer the added this wonderful tingle to the drink. And it was even in a proper copper mug (best way to drink it, keeps the drink colder for longer). Everything was plated beautifully and with care.
The decor and atmosphere itself was bustling but still very homey, welcoming and warm. I half expected there to be a wood fire crackling somewhere in the corner. I would definitely recommend this place for intimate, small dinners or even big groups.
I've been to all three Burgoos before on multiple occasions and always had a great time and great food but Burgoo on Mount Pleasant is now definitely my favourite. Thank you everyone and Sidney for such a...
Read moreI heard a lot about their Mac ‘n’ cheese and finally decided to give this place a fair shot. The restaurant itself has a rustic allure to it. A beautiful patio outside and dim lighting with cozy interiors on the inside. The atmosphere is conducive and perfect for a comfort meal but in style. Tip: Check your bill, they seem to charge for every little vegetable or seasoning you ask for and may not always disclose that to you upfront.
We tried their mac ‘n’ cheese three ways: Mac & cheese $13: This was really creamy, cheesy and delicious like any mac ‘n’ cheese would and SHOULD be. It would be ideal to have on a cold rainy evening however It wasn’t worth $13 in my books.
Mac & more $15: As their web site clams this one has aged white Cheddar, onion, thyme, bacon and peas, baked with breadcrumbs. It wasn’t as creamy as the mac & cheese therefore it didn’t quite jive with us.
Mac ‘n’ more vegetarian version $16 + : I wrote plus because i know the price was was more than the mac & more but don’t remember it exactly. I do remember being in shock though when i saw the bill. We asked our server if we could have onions and tomatoes on the mac & cheese to which she explicitly said “sure, it’ll just cost you the same as the mac & more”. Seemed fair at that time however that wasn’t the case on our bill. I was too lazy to dispute it, so I let it go.
Also, we’d requested our server if we could get chili flakes with our meal and she promptly said they don’t keep them at the restaurant. Weird, because I had had the mac ‘n’ cheese there just last week and was given them right away. I relayed that to her and she said she’ll go back and check after a few minutes she came back and said they had them however there was a cost of a $2 to get them. I found that ridiculous, they seemed to change prices for add ons as they please and frankly paying for some chili flakes is a joke. I don’t respect restaurants that nickel and dime their customers.
The good: Cozy, warm and welcoming interiors – Good comfort food
The Bad: Overly priced –...
