This is the only place I would pay $20 for breakfast. Why? I'll tell you why...
The Space. The Service. The Food.
The layout and floor plan just lifts. You know when you walk into a space, wherever it might be, and at times you either feel heavy and bothered, or light and comfortable? With this little eatery, the Feng Shui is on and an unburdened pump of positivity is present. So, this amazingly bright place is met immediately with smiles and continued great service.
I can confidently say that this is the first place that has served me scrambled eggs the way I make them myself at home (Yes, I do actually cook :|). I asked for soft scrambled, and not only were the eggs juicy but fluffy...layers and layers of oil free, juicy well seasoned scrambled eggs. Perfection. The bacon I always ask for extra crispy, cuz limp bacon is just....well...criminal. And extra crispy I got and again not too oily or salty....just damn right.
The hash browns were crispy on the outside and flakey soft on the inside like every pan fried potato should be, and the sausage was....well...like every breakfast sausage is at its best.
I was actually surprised how good their food was. I was expecting less even at best. You know...after the pandemic many standards have dropped across the board with all industries across the globe. This was a nice refreshing surprise. There are two other branches of The Basic. One on Denman and the other on Davie. This one is by far the best of the three.
They were also playing gently in the background songs that are part of my personal playlist I listen to...so that made the morning...
Read moreI ordered the chopped steak. It did its job filling me up.
I loved the potatoes on the side. Nicely seasoned and crunchy but soft inside when you bite into it. The toasts were also nicely done. Not too crunchy, but overall soft. There are tiny packets of jam and butter they give you for the toasts. The sunny side up eggs are cooked perfectly, but, it could use a pinch of salt and pepper. You could add salt and pepper yourself with the shakers on the table, but I feel like eggs should already be seasoned with salt and pepper during cooking unless customers ask them not to. For the main star of the plate, the chopped steak had a nice smoky flavour, and it was cooked decently. I would say it was dry, and could use more seasoning. A sauce going along with the chopped steak would make it a lot better.
I was served by two kind girls. They’re quick, friendly, and smiles, which is how you should be treating your customers. Very nice.
The interior is old, same for the outside. It doesn’t seem appealing when I first saw it. But I gave it shot, and the food justifies it.
Overall, I recommend going here if you are in need of breakfast or lunch to fill you up. A great...
Read moreA friend and I ventured to The Basic (Main street location). I arrived a few minutes early and upon arriving I was a bit unsure what was in store. The entryway was in disarray with what looked like construction materials. The sole server was busy and I was approached by someone behind the bar. He motioned me to a table and just kinda threw the menus on the table and walked away. I was quickly greeted by our server who promptly took and delivered my drink order while I waited for my friend to arrive. The menu has a decent amount of choices with some interesting and unusual options. I settled on the mess while my friend ordered the steak and eggs (which is more like a hamburger patty) and we shared the banana pancakes. This place is,as stated, basic. Nothing fancy but I have to say we both thoroughly enjoyed our choices. You can tell it’s a neighbourhood place with lots of regulars — it’s not huge but it’s cozy. Our server was delightful and as mentioned everything we ordered was delicious. We will...
