I have frequented Burgoo for more than a year, and my partner has for more than 20 years. Last week, we ordered some of our favourites for delivery. There was a metal staple in our corn and chicken soup. My partner thankfully found it in her mouth while chewing, first thinking it was a bone, then pulling it out and seeing it was metal. I immediately phoned the restaurant. No answer. I phoned twice more. No answer. I phoned another Burgoo location on Main and informed them of what happened, and they assured me they would contact this location on 10th and tell them, give them my info, and have them call me.
Once I had this Burgoo on the phone, they told me they didn’t know the source of the staple, and that there aren’t even staples in the kitchen (even though our bag had been stapled closed), and that the kitchen had discarded that batch of soup. Their solution to this ordeal was offering a gift card for $13. I made it clear I didn’t find this solution to be acceptable, and that we feared more pieces of metal would be in the rest of our food which we wouldn’t be eating. When I explained this, they “guaranteed” me that there aren’t any more staples in our food. How could they possibly guarantee this without knowing the source of the first staple, which was in a sealed soup container, covered by a lid?
The person I spoke to at that time explained that they would need authorization from a supervisor to do anything more than offer a $13 gift card I would have to come pick up. I asked to speak to a supervisor. No one was available. I asked them to get a supervisor to call me the next afternoon. No call that day. No call the next day. Or the next. Or since.
It’s highly concerning to me that they haven’t “found” the source of the staple that could have punctured my partner’s esophagus. Metal in food is a safety hazard. Not knowing where it came from is even more of a safety hazard. A $13 gift card doesn’t cut it, though I don’t at all blame the worker that explained they weren’t allowed to help me. No supervisor being available to even hear about such a safety risk is unacceptable. And then not hearing from anyone that could do anything after the fact is just insulting.
Had my partner swallowed this staple, this situation would have gone much differently. How much metal needs to be in our food to be...
Read moreCute comfort food eatery. Very warm atmosphere, from the design of the inside to the friendly service. Because the place is relatively small, it’s probably not a good idea to bring a large group, but it’s a nice place for a smaller hang or even to chill by yourself. I have been curious for a while and just tried it with some friends. I probably will be back. They have a great drink menu with lots of specialty cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks. I got a nonalcoholic pineapple guava soda. I don’t like drinks that are too sweet and this was good for me, but some people might find it weak compared to commercial fruit sodas. I got a soup and sandwich combo as my entree with the Eggplant Caprese sandwich and the Crab Bisque. I really liked this take on a caprese sandwich, and the baguette was very fresh and soft. The bisque was very good too. Rather than being a super creamy bisque, this was more tomato-based and a little tangy. Good flavour with a fair amount of crab meat. I also liked the little side of coleslaw that was included in the combo. Wasn’t really planning on getting dessert but then I saw they had a Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding, and I will rarely pass up on bread pudding. It was delicious but, as you might expect from bread pudding made of banana bread, with ice cream, with caramel sauce, VERY rich and heavy, and I had to get some help to finish it. I think this would be ideal for splitting between two people. For this meal, with tip, I paid $48, which surprised me. I thought it was a good meal, but not $50 good - I’d associate that kind of price with a more upscale experience than this. I can understand the soup and sandwich pricing, the dessert was a little expensive, but what really strikes me as obviously overpriced would be the $8 soda. I understand it’s made in house, but it was just a fruity soda - no fruit bits or anything fancy, and no alcohol. It was a nice refreshing drink, but for $8 I wouldn’t say it...
Read moreWe were looking for a Happy Hour spot with an outdoor patio near UBC’s Point Grey area—and found this hidden gem - Burgoo at Point Grey!
Burgoo has several locations around Vancouver, but this one feels especially cozy and central. We’ve always enjoyed their sandwiches, and this visit didn’t disappoint.
The Chicken Pesto Melt with kale Caesar salad was absolutely delicious—my go-to favourite and still highly recommended!
We also explored their Happy Hour menu, which offers a great BOGO deal on starters (2 for 1): • Pierogi – Cheesy potato dumplings with smoked sausage. Bite-sized and packed with flavour! • Garlic Shrimp – Sizzling prawns with blistered tomato served with toast. So tasty! • Chicken Karaage – Crispy and well-seasoned. Slightly dry but still enjoyable. • Dicky’s Dumplings – Hearty pork and shrimp dumplings. Great texture.
We ordered the Fresh Mango Cooler (non-alcoholic) to pair with our meal—super refreshing! We also enjoyed the local draught beer at the outdoor patio.
Whether you're a UBC student, local, or just passing through, Burgoo at Point Grey is a great spot to hang out.
