Dine Out @ Coast. I have never been to Coast but couple friends had recommended this place.
Ambiance: Posh, trendy, and casual. Having said that, since this place is located in downtown. most people were dressed business casual and formal. It isn't the quietest place and I wouldn't expect it to be but I enjoyed the vibes there.
Service: I had a great time there and our server Liam A made it possible. He was very polite and proactively checking up on us to see if we needed anything. Thanks Liam!
Food: I went for the dine out menu but also ordered few things off the dine out offer. See the image attached for dine out menu. Appetizers---Now, the fried oyster was very good, you still get that seafood flavour from the oyster, which sometimes is overtaken by the spice and being deep fried. The Indian candy salmon salad was good but I am not sure if I enjoyed the salmon jerky much. The salmon was sweet and has the smoky taste to it which some might enjoy. The ingredients are all really fresh! * Off dine out menu: Oysters, I am no expert in oysters so all I can say is the kushhi were fresh and awesome with the dressing on the side, and go during happy hour since it was $3.75 per Kushhi oyster outside happy hour. The calamari was by far one of the best I have had, none of those dinky little ring shaped ones, you get thick cut in deep fried sticks and they were seasoned well and the portion was good for the price, $14 I believe? The clam chowder I would strongly recommend trying, very rich flavour and the portion was unexpectedly huge compared to the tiny bowl you get in many other places. Loved it!! Did I mention it was only like $10.95? Entrees--- The 6oz USDA tenderloin (cooked to medium) was THE best part of the experience, super tender and mouth watering juicy. The wok fried prawn was done just right, not overly salty. The sides were Mac and cheese croquette and charred broccolini. Not a big fan of both sides.Don't be put off by this comment because it was just the charred taste that I didn't enjoy and the broccolini was not overcooked and chewy that you'd normally get from "charred" vegetable. The Mac and cheese was no good, I felt like mashed potatoes or even just baked nugget potato would have been a better choice. The lobster tail (2nd serve) was delicious. The meat was tender and butter didn't overtake the flavour. It was decently sized and presented, though I had to ask for it to be replaced because the first serve was overcooked and dry. The replacement came very quickly. Oh, the dressing in the lobster dish tasted like butternut squash, and the veggies were cooked just right for cutting and dicing, some places would just boil the carrots quickly but the core is still hard? Before I forget, we also did the sushi add-on for $10, you get 4 pieces of salmon maki and 3 pieces of tuna tataki, the sushi rice didn't taste like it was fully cooked but the tuna tataki was really delicious, and surprisingly the salad that came with it was so yum that I wish it was on the menu. Dessert---- Probably the most lackluster dish out of the whole dine out experience. Presentation looked good and that's about it.
Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and after tax and tips it was roughly $205 for the two of us, which was way off the plan of just "dine out". PS: don't order too much, it left me in a food coma but...
Read moreWe visited Coast on Monday, November 11, to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday with a group of seven. We were excited about their feature lobster set menu but left deeply disappointed with the overall experience. Award winning seafood it was not.
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and had our coats checked—a promising start. However, it quickly went downhill. We were only given the regular menu—no drink menu or feature set menu. When our server came by to ask for drink orders, we had to request menus, which were brought over: two drink menus and one wine list for seven people. We asked for more but were told the restaurant didn’t have enough menus. This is baffling for a fine dining establishment, especially on a quiet Monday.
Some time later. Once we finally ordered drinks, the issues continued. Glassware arrived dirty, with lip marks on several glasses. Two martinis were sent back because they weren’t made dirty as ordered—the only thing dirty was the glass. Later, I ordered a Grey Goose martini with a twist, and the twist I received was a poorly cut puck of lemon peel that looked sloppy. When I showed this to the server, he informed me the bartender was the bar manager, which made the lack of quality even more shocking. He returned with a beautifully twisted lemon peel, but by then, I was left questioning whether anyone understood the purpose of a twist in a martini.
When we finally received the feature menu, the food arrived promptly and was well-coursed. The starters were enjoyable, but the mains were a disappointment. Five of us ordered the lobster thermidor, and while the flavors were good, the lobster was overcooked and rubbery. One friend received noticeably less lobster meat than the rest and brought it up to the server, who responded with an awkward biology lesson about lobster anatomy. Eventually, the chef came out and reiterated the same explanation, which didn’t address the inconsistency. My friend’s meal was comped, but no replacement was offered—only a vague promise of a free meal on a future visit, which did nothing to help in the moment.
Throughout this experience, the manager was nowhere to be seen. Not once did they check in on our table or attempt to salvage the night. Despite it being a birthday celebration, no effort was made to make the evening special for my girlfriend, apart from a candle in her dessert.
To add insult to injury, the restaurant sent an automated email to my girlfriend afterward asking for feedback. She detailed our concerns but never received a response, even over a week later.
As someone who works in hospitality, I understand that mistakes can happen, but the lack of effort to address them, coupled with the absence of basic fine dining standards, was unacceptable. For a restaurant under the Glowbal Restaurant Group, I expected much more. Instead, we paid nearly $300 (after tax and tip) for a night that left us disappointed and unimpressed. Honestly, we would have had a better experience at a local oyster bar for half the price.
I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a true fine...
Read moreWe dined here on October 14, 2023 - it was a complete letdown. The server convinced us to try the "20 Years of Coast" special, saying it was ‘tapas style’ and recommending 2-3 dishes per person. There was no disclaimer written on the menu about this, and I would argue it is extremely misleading.
The first thing that came out was a bento box, which was just average — nothing you can't get at a cheaper Japanese place. A note about the bento - the taco wasabi dish needs either a small spoon or some chip/seaweed to go with it as I thought having it on its own felt incomplete. It's also next to impossible to pick it up with chopsticks that were given as a utensil of choice - that's my two cents. We also waited an abnormally long time between this dish and the other ones we ordered. It took about 20 to 25 minutes of just sitting there with empty plates before anything else showed up. Further, our drinks took approximately 20 minutes to arrive at our table after we had ordered them. They arrived after the bento did.
Then came the octopus, which was supposed to be charred according to the menu. It arrived cold, which made no sense since it was supposed to be charred (hot) on a grill? When our other selections finally arrived, we literally had no room on our table cause of the other plates already on the table that we were finished with. The person who brought the food (dressed in black attire and presumably a food runner) didn't know where to put them and gave us attitude with a BIG eye roll when I asked if we could get the empty plates already on the table cleared away - she was fully expecting me to stack the plates up myself when we asked for assistance to clear some of the empty dishes. After she noticed that I was not stacking up the plates on the table, she reluctantly stacked the plates up, and almost threw the cutlery on top of the dirty plates resulting in a loud ‘clanging’ sound. This unacceptable attitude from that staff member alone COMPLETELY RUINED the nice dinner my partner and I were trying to have.
The beef strip loin and its sides, like the garlic whipped potatoes and corn, came out either lukewarm or room temperature too. Nothing that we ordered fit the bill of what I expect out of a nice restaurant, particularly one that is part of the Glowbal Restaurant Group. We were really looking forward to a nice meal, and this place completely missed the mark. The whole experience was a mess from start to finish. If you're thinking about eating here, save your time and money. We won't be going back, and we definitely won't be recommending it to any of our friends. Also a note for management: When you recommend 2-3 dishes per person, at least make sure you can execute both service and delivery of the dishes properly. I'd rate this...
