It’s Friday evening. Every seat is full. The room hums with the soft murmur of conversation, punctuated by the happy clinking of plates and cutlery under the weight of some of the best Vietnamese food you can get this side of mighty Mekong. And I’ve eaten a lot of Vietnamese food, in a lot of different places, including all over Vietnam and I think this place is "Xuất sắc" (excellent).
This little East Vancouver corner isn’t fancy but it’s familiar—comforting, even. I’ve probably eaten here a hundred times over the years. It’s my go-to. I don’t know why I haven’t left a review until now, but as I sit here waiting for my order, it feels like the right moment.
It had been a while since my last visit, but when I walked in, the owner greeted me with a smile and a story—like we were old friends catching up. That’s the kind of place this is.
This isn’t fine dining. It’s casual, no-nonsense good food. Fast, delicious, affordable. The women working here each have their own distinct personality—like the pho, each one with its own flare. According to some of these other reviews they’re not always the friendliest, but as a business owner myself, I get it. Service work takes a toll. The effort it takes to show up, day in and day out, and get things right—it drains you. Still, they always deliver what’s most important.
I’ve brought countless friends here, and sent many more. If you’re looking for someone to coddle you and speak sweetly every time you walk through the door, maybe try a spa. But if you want strong cup of Vietnamese coffee, fresh ingredients, fast service, and food that hits the spot every single time—this...
Read moreAs a faithful consumer of goods & services along Sunrise Village. I stopped in front here at the corner. Bewildered, I thought I started hearing the song “Where have all the flowers gone?”. But no, it’s Thanksgiving weekend, & I’m standing in front of Le Pho Vietnamese restaurant. It was 11:30 a.m. & many people were having early lunch. The former flower shop was catering to customers like myself, who were happily enjoying a Pho soup. Before mine arrived, the spring rolls got to the table first but not before a cup of tea & a glass of water. It was a warm sunny day, the service was fast, & the young women serving made sure everyone one was getting enough to keep hydrated. The soup (No. 18, hot & sour) arrived soon enough, & then tragedy struck; a part of my spring roll sprang into my soup, spraying a volley of orange dots on my white t-shirt! Grateful for the pair of plain bamboo chopsticks the server brought me a little later, I did what was needed to clean up & returned to then start my soup. It was delicious, with fresh mint & sprouts. The lemon grass had a wonderful aroma. The café is spacious, the windows let in the beautiful sunshine, there is a large screen t.v. & it was clear that there were many happy patrons,...
Read moreAbsolutely atrocious service from the owners daughters. Just to call out just one example during the sitting, I was given the “stink eye” and an obvious scoul when asking for an additional bowl and napkins (2 people) which was a completely reasonable request. Felt like cattle getting hustled through the feeding trough where the clientele equals a dollar sign to their staff and nothing more. There are many places close by that show their paying customers some baseline respect. “Give us your money and get out” seems to be their mantra. As can be seen on most of the other negative reviews there will likely be a totally predictable false response below stating “disrespect to servers”, etc. Regardless of the fabricated story they choose to make up this time, I chose to get up and leave after 3 separate encounters of bold faced rudeness. A lack of basic service quality is the theme in many of their reviews. Instead of continually pointing the finger back at your paying customer, it might be time to have a look in the mirror and seek out some soft...
