Mainichi SUSHI is such a great spot near UBC, located at Alma Street and West Broadway. They have amazing “Build Your Own Combo” options — over 80 dishes to choose from! We went with 4 combos, which meant 12 different dishes in one meal. Every dish was fresh, delicious, and beautifully made.
Combo 1: Toro Sashimi, LA Galbi, Sashimi Salad Perfect for sashimi lovers. The toro melted in my mouth, and the sashimi salad had so much variety. Fresh, fresh, fresh! This one is a must-order.
Combo 2: Hotate Sashimi, Unagi Donburi (full size upgrade), Prawn & Yam Tempura We paid a bit more to upgrade the unagi donburi to a full size — totally worth it. Generous portion, fresh eel, and the tempura was light and crisp.
Combo 3: Wild Salmon Sashimi, Mentaiko Cream Udon, Wing The mentaiko cream udon was rich, creamy, and so smooth. Amazing flavour. Not something you usually find in a set combo!
Combo 4: Hamachi Sashimi, Spicy Ramen with Beef, Chopped Scallop Nigiri Quality ingredients really stood out here, especially the hamachi sashimi and scallop nigiri.
I love that it’s reasonably priced for the quality and variety. You can mix and match to suit your mood — even kids can find plenty they like. This place serves authentic Japanese cuisine with handcrafted sushi, and honestly, it feels like a hidden gem in the neighbourhood. UBC students are so lucky to have it close by.
We’ll definitely be back for more!

Read moreThis location has opened recently and had a 50% off promotion which ended Jan. 13. Before a visit there, read a few reviews of their Cambie location and was curious about the place. To open a sushi restaurant in an area where you have 6 other Japanese restaurants within a 3-4 block radius, will prove challenging. It better be good! Placed our order over the phone and we were told that waiting time was 60 minutes, understandable since the place was busy with the 50% off promotion, we didn't mind that so placed order anyway. Eventually, the order was ready (another 15-20 min had passed...) Veredict? Not happy with 2 essential items: their rice was very sub par, and their sashimi tasteless as is the case with fish that has been frozen for a while. With that said, if TonTon wants to survive in this neighborhood, they will have to pick up their game. After the 50% promotion, their prices are competitive with the other restaurants in the area, however, their quality not so much. Not asking same quality as in Japan, but at least a decent product. Further to this. Hate to be picky but there is something fundamentally not right at TonTon. If a 20something is preparing your sashimi/sushi, then you will be as far away from true Japanese dishes as you...
Read moreWe went on a sushi date to Mainichi and decided to build our own combos.
Mainichi lets you customize your own set combos, which is such a fun (and rare!) concept. Between the two of us, we picked four different combinations—and every dish was fresh, well-portioned, and beautifully plated.
Combo 1 (Ebi Sunomono, Toro Nigiri, Unagi Don) was fresh and rich. The Toro literally melted in the mouth, and the Unagi Don was warm, smoky, and full of flavour. The sunomono added a nice tangy balance. Combo 2 (Wild Salmon Sashimi, Real Crab California Roll, Chicken Yakisoba) was perfect for seafood lovers. The salmon was smooth and clean, and I appreciated that the California roll was made with real crab—rare to find!
Combo 3 (Prawn Tempura, Chopped Scallops, Yakisoba) was my comfort-food combo—crispy, creamy, and cozy. The tempura had the perfect crunch without feeling greasy. Combo 4 (Spicy Tuna, Negihama, Chicken Karaage) packed the boldest punch. The spicy tuna was flavorful without being overpowering, and the karaage was good.
Portions were generous for the price, and the quality really stood out.
The atmosphere inside is cozy and casual—perfect for a weeknight date or even a solo sushi fix. The staff were polite...
