This is a fast food restaurant. That being said, it is in a part of downtown Victoria which is charming and beautiful. Parking is fairly easy to find nearby. There are plenty of shops and interesting spots to check out which you are here.
The menu is a digital board and has an amusing set of cartoonish images it parcels through to keep you entertained while you wait for your food. Your carbonated beverages are in cans and above average taste. The ginger ale is good and is made with real ginger.
The young, redheaded man who worked the counter was very helpful in making sure our food was safe and helping us figure out what to order as first-time customers.
We visited here as they have gluten free buns and poutine. I was very happy to hear they have vegan aioli as well, as I'm allergic to eggs, in addition to gluten and wheat. We ordered two gluten free burgers (one black bean and yam) with bun and a gluten free poutine to share.
We were happy with the quality and amount of cheese on the poutine. The few fries we had, which were dry, were delicious. The gravy is bland and thin. It tastes like someone thickened bargain brand chicken stock and called it gravy. Because it was so thin, it sunk to the bottom of the fries, making all the fried potatoes on the bottoms gross mush. We both agreed we would not order this again, but we would order a plain fry.
That said, the gluten free buns were so like gluten buns in appearance, taste and texture, I went to ask if our order was really gluten free. I will be sick for months if I ingest gluten, so I needed to be sure. He said they have a local bakery make them just for this chain. All I have to say is the other eateries in the area need their number, because they were all the lumpy, dense, powdering gunk I sadly receive most of the time. The kitchen cut each the burger burger and the black bean burger in half, as we both wanted to try them. We swapped half of each and agreed the black bean and yam is in the top two for best black bean burgers we've ever had. The beans were not sandy mush, as so many are. They had texture and some light crunch on the outside edges. I happily finished my two half burgers and nibbled some of the fries.
The seating is all typical, bright hue plastic. The tables are laminate. The indoor seating area was on the small side, but there is a beautiful park nearby that would make a for a wonderful setting to eat in. I couldn't help but notice the floor and all the tables were littered with food and pieces of food packaging. I hope we came at the end of a rush and they hadn't had a chance to clean it up.
Overall, I would return again for the burgers, a very good ginger...
Read moreThis was going to be a routine review after a leisurely weeknight stop for a burger, but tonight's unusual incident during our burger particularly demonstrates Big Wheel's customer focus.
Big Wheel is a locally conceived and owned business, that is committed to provide the best quality fast food burger they possibly can, in as environmentally responsible manner as possible.
The menu is small - burgers made with hormone-free, BC-range raised beef, that is ground onsite daily; Nathan's hot dogs, and a veggie burger that is also made in-house. Fries, deep fried pickles, and a rotating roster of shakes. This is as close as one gets up here to an In-N-Out Burger - imagine your In-N-Out burger joint was run by hipsters (but in a good way ;). They also have a liquor license, so you have the option of 5 oz. wine pours or Hoyne beer with your burger.
The Burgers are solid - nothing fancy, but consistently done with a balanced amount of condiments, toppings etc. We have tried lots of the fancier burgers in town, but these are the ones we come back for,
Customer service: this is a self-serve operation, orders and payment are taken at the till, and you wait til your order is called by number. Generally we find if its only moderately busy, someone will actually bring you your order.
While we were there tonight, a random guy walked in the front and started berating customers for eating meat and threatening people. He caused enough of a disturbance that staff quickly called the police, and followed him out to ensure they could point him out to police on arrival. Despite an unsettling incident, staff remained calm, and handled incoming customers without becoming overly alarmist. We were there a few minutes longer than anticipated to give a report to the police, and were approached afterwards by staff to ensure we were fine to make our way home, and offered a gift...
Read moreI used to enjoy this place. Not after my last visit, I tried to order and employee could not hear me, I first tried to ask about mushroom/bacon burger displayed on poster. He said that do not sell those, then I said I'll get 2 cheeseburgers, and he repeated back to me.. 2 veggie burgers? I understand it's loud in there, probably new staff member. But not once did he make an effort to even listen to my order. He just continued to repeat wrong items back to me. Plexiglass and my mask didn't help I realize that. However, neither did the manager, until I pulled my mask down below my mouth, I did not take it off, and I was planning on pulling it back up immediately. Considering, this kid obviously could not hear me at all. I was going to get my order to go and all ready waisted a good 7-10 mins on trying to even place my order. Now, there was one table occupied by 2 customers, I was more that 6 feet away from them. A good 3-4 feet away from employee, including plexiglass between us. Manager now decides to get involved, walks over seys "mam please put your mask back on now" okay I get it. But instead of me pretty much yelling for this kid to hear me (which I feel I basically all ready was) I'd quickly pull my mask down, so kid can get it right and quit guessing. I explained that to manager and all she said was "ya it's Loud in here" so I keep my cool, try again and kid still repeats wrong order back to me. Then I heightened my voice, and manager says to me "if you continue to yell, you will need to leave"" hahaha yes! Doing that now. I'll spend that $65 lunch...
