We visited in August, and it was a gorgeous evening. We had passed this place several times during our stay, and were thrilled to have a pub within walking distance of our "off the beaten path" holiday stay. The island sunsets are sensational, and we anticipated a hearty dinner followed by a walk on the beach for our last night in town. The place was busy, but we had expected that having passed by on prior nights, so we arrived early. In hindsight we probably should have just left as soon as we were seated, due to our lackluster hostess, but we were weary after many days of sight seeing, and very much looking forward to some hearty pub grub. I'm not sure of the name of our server, as she did not introduce herself. She was on the surface pleasant, but in a disingenuous way that immediately put us in our place, letting us know she didn't enjoy her job...and therefore her suffering was now our suffering. She put off a vibe that screamed "annoyed". I felt like my mere existence was a nuisance to her. Nonetheless, my husband and I both work customer service, and figured we could empathize with her plight, because we all have tough days! However, the service was unbelievablely slow, wow!! We had some curry to start, and it was ok, dry, but flavorful as curry aught to be, but I remember thinking I could have done better at home. And then the main course...oh my word it was the worst burger I've ever had at a pub. It was SO dry it was inedible. I asked our server if the burgers were made to order, or pre cooked and then reheated. She assured me they were made to order (yeah right!). She apologized with an eye roll, and stomped off. The burger she returned with was exactly the same...so terribly overcooked and dry. By this point we were two hours in and I was starving, and wanted to make it to the beach for the sunset, so I ate a little under half. We were given a few dollars off our meal, and our server made it clear without any prompting that I ate enough to warrant a charge when she deposited the check at our table. I really couldn't believe our culinary evening could be so disappointing. If I'm paying nearly 20$ for a burger, I'm expecting something delicious! To be clear, we did not take anything to go, it was that bad. We most definitely will not be back, and will not recommend this restaurant. We live across the water in Port Angeles and now actively warn our friends (and customers/tourists) to...
Read moreIf you visit Victoria’s BeaconHill Park, and you love pub food then you must stop at The Beagle Pub.
I visited Victoria for business and originally we’re going to try for Mexican food in the area. Unfortunately, it closed early. Fortunately, The Beagle was open so my colleague and I decided to eat there. We are both glad we did. The service is top notch, the atmosphere is pub-ish, yet serene. Easy to have a quiet conversation, whether you sit inside or outside. We went and ate - late lunch on both occasions.
Many of the dishes looked 🤤 with the three we ordered being no exception.
The first day I ordered the “Mexican Chicken Burger”. I opted for the wrap option with fries on the first day. The dish was just the right size for me. My colleague ordered the Beagle Club Sandwich with beagle fries and it was monstrous!
We both agreed that the food was fantastic and the servings more than appropriate for a pub. We liked it so much in fact, that we decided to return the next day.
Of course, being on a wife-mandated diet, my second meal was the same as my first except with a Caesar Salad. My friend ordered the fish (Cod)and chips. Again, mine was just the right size, even with the fries;my colleague’s was, again, pretty large. He even commented that it was a good thing the meal came with only one piece of fish otherwise he would not be able to finish. As on the first day, the service was excellent and the atmosphere good, albeit a bit louder than the previous day.
I would recommend this place to anyone I know, travelling to Victoria and looking for a good, mellow place to eat...
Read moreThis is an enjoyable pub that I would visit with friends. But, as in this instance, when I visited with my parents the environment was a little loud for us.
The bench seats are comfortable, but the chairs are hard and wooden. This is painful for some of the 80+ yr olds. Fortunately, when we asked the hostess for a pillow they were able to provide one for my elderly father.
This was a last-minute change from another that offered wide range of ribbs. Since this was a pub, I unfortunately made an assumption that they would have ribbs. I was wrong, somewhat, because they did offer dry rub wings as an appetizer.
Thus, abandoning my hopes for ribs, I choose one of their burgers. I forgot the name, but it was very tasty. My Dad asked for a Rubin, and it was quite good. My Mom asked for the candied walnut salad, and she too liked the meal.
Overall, this was a good experience, except for the waitress. For some reason she didn't like us and seemed to be "put out" by us asking questions about the meal. Overall, she was professional, but distant and not welcoming. I'm sure it must have been a bad day for her... something we all strive to overcome.
So, we had a nice evening of chit chatting, good food...
