I recently got a small Black Forest cake as that’s always been one of my favourites. Much like a Sachertorte, when it’s done right it’s amazing.
I’ll openly admit that Black Forest is one of the harder cakes to do well. There’s a wide range of variations on the recipe and a number of ways to cut corners to save time/money that end up ruining the experience.
I will say that compared to what you’d get at a supermarket, this was better. The usage of Kirsch was a nice surprise and the whipped cream wasn’t over-sweetened or pasty like you often get. It had a lot of elements of a good Black Forest cake. But it did leave a few things to be desired.
The chocolate shavings were one area that disappointed me. They had that slight waxy/gritty mouthfeel you get with chocolate that isn’t very high quality. Not as bad as it could have been if they’d used some really cheap chocolate, but definitely noticeable enough to be a let down.
The other disappointment was the cherry compote. Not the taste, mind you. The taste was quite good. It was the distribution that let me down. Instead of being evenly spread across the entire layer it was “bunched” more in the middle to the point where about an inch around the ends/corners (the cake was a rectangle, not a circle as their website shows) had none at all. Sort of like how the jelly in a jelly donut is distributed - nothing on the sides and a large deposit in the middle. They added more whipped cream in place of compote around the edges/corners, which I’m guessing was to save money, but if that’s the case I would have preferred a more even but thinner distribution to the thicker but bunched in the middle distribution the cake had.
So, all things considered, a swing and a miss. It had a lot of good things going for it, but a few unfortunate decisions held it back from being a cake I’d buy again. A shame especially for a bakery in a place with such strong German roots as KW.
This wouldn’t stop me from trying a different type of cake from this bakery in the future as I’m sure there are other kinds they do a good job with. It just means I’d go elsewhere for...
Read moreNougat's location uptown Waterloo in the shops at waterloo Town Square makes it a great place to pop into when you are out shopping for other things, but I am sure also is reflected in high rent costs and thus higher than average prices.
The service was really friendly and helpful. I ordered some jam jam cookies, a slice of chocolate roll cake and a slice of strawberry pineapple cake. The lady gave me two slices of the pineapple cake for the price of one which was wonderful but should have been a warning.
The cake had obviously been sitting for a while and had dried out quite a bit. The flavour was overwhelmingly sweet without much to balance it and so after we split one piece neither of us wanted more. The roll cake was wonderfully chocolate and less cloyingly sweet but had obviously just come out of the freezer which affected the texture of the cake. The cookies were good but no better than I have had at other bakeries.
The food wasn't bad, but there are so many other small bakeries in town that I have enjoyed more that were both cheaper and fresher.
Edit: If I could I would bump this to a 3.5 because their no yeat sourdough bread was delicious and actually had...
Read moreCute Little bakery with some tasty treats. We were looking for a place to pick up some desserts for a dinner party late on a saturday night, and we came across Nougat. They had a pretty little display of different desserts and treats in their case. We purchased several of their tarts. The price was about $25 for 6 tarts, which we do not have a problem with. We are willing to pay a decent price for quality goods. The tarts were very well presented - beautifully decorated, and had a very nice appearance. The flavours were very good as well. We tried a variety of flavours and all tasted...
