I recently visited the Chez Cora location in Edmonton for lunch. As many know, Chez Cora is a popular Quebec-based chain known for reasonably priced breakfast and lunch items. Having tried the original Chez Cora in Montreal, I was curious to see how the concept had translated outside of its home province.
While the menu offerings at the west Edmonton Chez Cora were similar to those in Quebec, featuring staples like crepes, sandwiches, and soups, I found that the quality and recipe lacking still. The crepes tasted overly sweet and the fillings seemed stale. The fruit was nice but this Cora is no worse than any other Chez Cora I have ever eaten at.
The coffee was weak and bland exactly like the orginal. Well, this is the way of North America breakfast places like Denny's, McDonalds, and Good Eat Dinners.
It's clear that expanding nationally has not come at a cost for Chez Cora. It is the same average food with fancy fruit. It is hard to believe this restaurant has been transplanted across Canada. Why not Belle Province?
At around $18 per person for the basic lunch I had, Chez Cora is not expensive by Edmonton standards. However, given the relatively average and uninspired food, I can't say it provides good value compared to other local breakfast and lunch options. It is hard to believe that the brand power of Chez Cora got them into the Alberta market. I'd recommend locals seek out independent cafes for a better...
Read moreI'll start by saying I have always loved Cora's restaurants but don't get to go much since moving out of the city. My family went on Sunday moring shortly before 10am. It was busy but there was no wait. Service was good, and the food came out at a reasonable amount of time. My issues came witht the food. As always the potatoes and fruit was great but all our eggs were over cooked. I ordered medium eggs benidict and it was fully cooked, not runny at all. My son and wife had different dishes that both were supposed to have medium fried eggs and they were both fried hard. My wife would never complain or send anything back ever and my son was more interested in his pancake to care about over cooked eggs so rather than hold up our days plans I ate my dissapointing bennies in silence. For reference I've been a chef for almost 20 years and cooking an egg is one of the easiest things to do and easiest things to know you over cooked. It would have taken less than 2 minutes to re-cook the eggs but instead the kitchen just sent out an obviously screwed up order. Cora's is a breakfast specialty restaurant and should be experts at cooking eggs. It's like going to Ruth's Chris and getting a well done steak when ordering a medium rare. My second issue was with the bacon. I'm not sure when Cora's switched to the pre cooked reheat bacon but it shouldn't be served in a restaurant. Put it on a sandwich fine but not as a breakfast...
Read moreWe stopped by here a couple of weeks ago for brunch and had a great experience. The staff and management here genuinely care about their customers. I typically order the same few items when we come in, but this time I decided to try something different. When the item arrived, it was not at all what I expected. It wasn't poorly made or in any way inedible, it just wasn't palatable to me personally. I didn't want to send it back because I felt bad, but our server could see that something was amiss when she stopped by so I decided to order something else anyway since my blood sugar level was dropping quickly and I needed to be able to eat something to keep it stable. She was super nice about the whole situation, she could see that I hadn't eaten more than one or two bites of what I'd ordered, so she happily brought back a menu so I could choose something else. I ended up ordering a classic breakfast with bacon, eggs, and toast, and it was fantastic. At the end of the meal, I assumed I'd have to pay for both orders because it wasn't the kitchen's fault that I didn't like what I'd chosen, but to my surprise, they took the first item off my bill. They 100% didn't have to do that but it shows that they really do want their customers to have a good experience and to leave satisfied. It's a great way to generate return customers and we will most definitely be back again. Thank you for the...
