Room 209
Overall, no complaints staying at the Comfort Inn West, not perfect but neither am I.
Very clean room and comfortable bed, but a couple of minor issues with housekeeping. One day the towels vanished but failed to reappear. Another day the room was missed altogether, not a big deal to me, just mentioning for clarity.
Good value for the money and a walk to West Edmonton Mall takes less than 30 minutes.
I suggest readers with OCD continue this review, mentally healthy individuals, stop here.
I attempted to use the laundry facilities and eventually succeeded. The temperamental vending machine tested my determination, my patience level, and my OCD. My first tussle occurred while purchasing laundry detergent. #53 on the unit is broken, as well as the coin return mechanism. I persevered, selecting #55 as with the same result, no soap.
Somewhat irritated, I asked the kind lady at the front desk for help. She assisted, first pushing #53 like I did, with no result, she then tried #54, and it worked perfectly. Next time I know, only even numbers.
Room 209 needs light blocking shades/blind to block out the bright security light placed inches from the window. The first night I could not determine when, or if, the sun even went down. The annoying security light is the same colour balance as the sun, forcing me to name it “Second Sun”.
The continual window glow also gave me flashbacks of living in Inuvik with 24-hour sunlight. Waking up and not knowing if it’s day or night can be very disconcerting. Fun & interesting when 18, bothersome when 50.
However, I stumbled upon a solution to the light intrusion. My fix involved strategically placing the bed runner on top of the window and stuffing the curtains into the window sill to block any remaining strays of light. (see photo)
I’m not tall, so to accomplish this temporary solution, I stood on the couch nightly and placed the runner like a determined amateur decorator without a stool. A viable alternative, but not recommended for clumsy guests.
After that brilliant darkening solution, for some reason, I kept the nightlight on in the bathroom, even though, it too, over illuminated the room. However, I couldn’t resist observing the lovely colours in the middle of the night while relieving myself. My solution, tossing a facecloth over it produced the perfect ambience. I’m still frustrated that I forgot to take a photo.
I gave up on asking for decaf coffee only, not just at this Comfort Inn but everywhere I stay. Now, instead of having that conversation or leaving a note for housekeeping I just take it off the housekeeping cart as I walk by. I’m patiently building a stash of decaf that I dutifully transport from city to city like it’s my only option. A non-OCD individual would just ask at the front desk.
Only 1 of my two room keys worked on the side doors, not an issue, but a revelation I wish I had figured out before walking around the building swearing in...
Read moreOverall, a decent experience with some minor flaws. Stayed 3 weekday nights in a king bed rm. Hotel is older with common areas and parking lot especially needing some TLC (this is a common theme in Edmonton for all places). Rm was nicely made with clean bathroom and firm bed (I like softer but this one wasn't too firm to give me issues). Rm includes microwave, mini fridge (the larger version), alarm clock, lamp with two wall outlets, charging station with two wall outlets and two USB 2A chargers, 40" tv, desk with chair, loveseat with leg rest, hair dryer, iron with board, small closed with 7 hangers, small dresser. There was some noise from the parking lot which was understandable considering how close you are on a bottom floor room. We also could hear doors opening and closing throughout the night and occasionally some noises in the upper floor and adjacent rooms. Wi-Fi was good. We were able to upload pictures and video to social media without any issues. I was also able to get a signal in the parking lot at the nearby Asian grocery store, which was great because we didn't have any data coming from the US. If you get a bottom floor room that faces the rear of the building you have a sliding glass door that gives direct access to the parking lot. Nice if you get lucky enough to park next to your room. You are right next door to a McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut, and within walking distance to a BMO Bank and a large grocery store. Less than a 5-minute drive to West Edmonton Mall along a major street, with much more shopping and food options available along the way. Would consider staying here again even with the flaws as it was about half the cost of nearby hotels and just as close...
Read moreI booked a room here for an upcoming medical appointment and at least four times during the process, I mentioned I needed a wheelchair accessible room. The agent assured me that while there may not be a roll in shower, there would be a walk in tub. She also told me that they could not guarantee the wheelchair accessible room would be available at arrival; but, the room we booked would be on the first floor.
Today, I called back to ask if we could either add a cot or get a room with a second bed. Getting a room with a second bed was actually cheaper. so we opted to do that. Before proceeding I asked if this new room would still work for someone in a wheelchair, The agent working today informed me that they have one room with wider doors but they don't really have wheelchair accessible rooms and they couldn't guarantee the one room would be available. Confused, I explained we already had a reservation booked and I had been told that the room we booked would work for someone in a chair. The agent just kept saying "we can't guarantee the room will be available." at which point I asked to speak to a manager.
The manager proceeded to tell me that the agent who booked the reservation did not mention I needed an accessible room and again told me that they don't really have accessible rooms, I asked her if the regular room would allow me to get my wheelchair in the room at which point she asked me how big my chair was. I have a custom fit chair that is fairly maneuverable. Then, she asked me if I RELIED on my wheelchair. When I said yes, the manager proceeded to tell me that I should "find another hotel and they are cancelling my reservation because she did not want to put my...
