BALOS — Restaurant in Westmount

Not impressed with the service received at the restaurant. We came in for dinner, the front of house/ lady who walked us to our table was lovely very talkative and welcoming. We sat down and chose our drinks and ordered, and a different waiter was taking our service. He ignored my mother twice when she asked for a drink, and was generally quite passive aggressive towards her. Her drink did not arrive the entire time at the restaurant after asking twice. She also ordered an orange juice for my 7 year old brother. When our drinks arrived, my brother was given a vodka orange. Thankfully the waiter stopped and said is that for him just before he drunk it, but my brother is disabled so could have easily drunk it without realising. Our food arrived and was fine, and we needed takeaway boxes to take the rest of our food home. We explained we wanted takeaway boxes and he told us he would pack it for us. Therefore, my mother explained how we wanted it packed as we were going on a flight the next day so it had to be separately packed so the food didn’t mix ( one food was to be eaten dry so would be ruined with moisture). He snapped at her and said yes i will pack it. When the takeaway boxes arrived the food was all mixed together as we didn’t ask. We paid the bill, and kindly still left a $20 tip which was reasonable for the service we received. If the service had been on piont, it would be a 5 star reivew. Went there for dinner reservation was at 6. Waited about 5-10 minutes for menus to arrive. Water glasses were filled just prior to receiving menus. Ordered food and drinks at the same time as we know it was going to take a long time. We were trying to give them the benefit of the doubt as they only opened a few weeks ago. Twice we were told our drinks "would be right out". At least 3 times servers tried to serve us food that we did not order - we saw this repeated at other tables, too. There were several (what I assume) were managers walking around and 2 of them clearly saw that we were sitting at the table with NOTHING for an extended period of time. We finally recieved our cocktails 35 minutes after we ordered them. The meal arrived a few minute after that. A 3rd manager did stop to ask how things were going and we told her we waited 35 minutes for our drinks. She comped the drinks because of the wait. The meal was EXCELLENT. However, they really need to work out the kinks in getting the flow and timing correct; They definitely need better training for staff delivering food or a better system. Either the staff were not familiar with the table numbers or the system they have in place could be improved. If you follow me you know I love trying new restaurants. I've only heard good things about Balos. Other reviewers were not wrong. The decor is beautiful and the greeting from the hostess was friendly with a big smile. We were given a choice of window tables that had been reserved for us. With a large variety of cuisine, it took some time to decide on what to order. We started with 2 different salads that we shared between 4 adults; Horatio (classic Greek salad) and the Mixed Salad with Avocado. Both were delicious. I ordered the Fried Calamari which was accompanied by steamed veggies and roasted Greek potatoes. The calamari was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The veggies were cooked to perfection and the potatoes were outstanding. My husband had the Grilled Chicken Fillets with also had the veggies and potatoes. The chicken breasts were well cooked yet remaining juicy on the inside. The other couple shared a whole Chilean Seabass with the same veggies and potatoes. They loved it. I found that the fish was very thin but looked very nice. Wow! The portion sizes are really big, except for the fish, and everything was delicious. Really delicious. Sorry, but there was no room for dessert. Will I go...
