The gist: The bubble tea ✔️✔️ The in-shop baked pastries ❌❌❌
Full-length: I've been here several times throughout the years, always coming for the bubble tea but also always trying a new pastry too. I love the selection, and the smell draws me in from the Atwater Metro stop as it's right outside the Alexis Nihon doors.
And every time I eat here, I'm disappointed. I remember the very first time I tried it with my mom, and it wasn't very good. Then slowly through the years, I've tried more and more things, always looking for something I enjoy. Today, I bought a cute little jelly/coconut roll with cream inside. It looks delicious. I brought it home to share with my family, and it tasted like nothing.
There was coconut but I couldn't taste it, the cake itself was tasteless, the STRAWBERRY JELLY felt like jelly on my tongue but tasted only very mildly sweet. The cream filling was the only thing that had a taste, and it just tasted like hydrogenated oil/very waxy in my mouth.
I hate wasting food, but I had to throw it in the bin after eating half of it, I couldn't stomach any more. Their pastries look LOVELY. They're well crafted! It just feels like they put all the effort into the way it looks and not the way it tastes. I've tried so many 'different' pastries from here, but they all taste the same despite looking different.
The only reason I didn't make a review before, is because I kept coming back and giving them chances. But I'm done with that now.
I'm very sad to say, but I don't think I will be...
Read moreLocated inside the Alexis Nihon shopping centre in Montreal, Coco Bun offers a quick bite with a comforting nod to Hong Kong–style bakery fare. Tucked among the usual food court suspects, its small counter stands out thanks to the warm aroma of fresh buns and the sight of trays being refilled throughout the day.
The selection isn’t vast, but what’s there is well-executed. The BBQ pork bun, with its soft, slightly sweet dough and savoury filling, is a reliable choice. The pineapple bun—flaky, golden, and crusted just right—is a highlight if you catch it fresh. There’s a small fridge with drinks and milk tea options, though don’t expect full café service.
Although Coco Bun officially opens at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, arriving close to that time often means being greeted by nearly empty shelves. The real selection starts to appear a bit later in the morning, once the kitchen catches up.
Service is quick and efficient, in line with the mall setting, and prices are reasonable. It’s not the kind of place you go out of your way for, but if you’re in Alexis Nihon and craving a warm, nostalgic snack, it’s worth stopping by. It adds a little bit of character to an otherwise...
