A&W Canada — Restaurant in Whitby

I went here twice. The first time I ordered and stopped by the window and while waiting watched them make my fries and the lady used her hands to grab the container with no gloves on. I thought "ew gross" and thought I just came on an off night. I memorized where she placed her hands around the container of the onion rings to not pull the onion rings out of that side of the carton to get the germs. She almost forgot my root beer.

The second time I was hungry late at night and ordered a burger and fries, there was a guy and lady working and they both did not have gloves on. I remembered "Oh yeah that's why I don't come here..." To my surprise this time it wasn't just the lady who grabbed the food and put it in the bag with no gloves on but the guy PREPARING MY BURGER did not have gloves on. So in between the space of the glass and where I was stopped by the window I could see him opening the sandwich bread, grabbing the lettuce and tomatoes with BARE HANDS !!!!! and assembling my burger. I was shocked. It wasn't just the girl...both of them hand no gloves.

I thought I was seeing things. It's like how could this be possible to be served food with ungloved staff literally handling the tomatoes with the hands they wipe with?

Parasites can be spread through under the fingernails. Most people have parasites like salmonella, h.pylori and other worms and irregardless of using soap, these hide under the fingernails, so me eating that burger after I could have consumed bugs. I should have refused the burger and told them to make a new one with gloves.

People in food services should be trained in parasite transmission and understand why wearing gloves is a non-negotiable in a time post-COVID also. The world is becoming a more dirty place, you just don't know what those hands touched before and irregardless everyone's rear end that is wiped, has parasites, so those fingers that also touched the toilet to flush are touching my food - no way.

How can this be allowed in CANADA?

This was back in March/April and the first time was February 2025.

Again please train staff on parasites, glove wearing and why we do not do this in a civilized country, that will remain civilized. I will not pay for food that is gross like that and prepared by bare hands, even if it is past midnight. My eyes can still see there...

I want to give a Thank you to Partha, who I think is the manager at this location. Last week, I went into A&W to place my order, got it and was in the parking lot when my mother noticed an employee rushing out after me. She motioned for me to turn around, the employee informs me "She gave you the wrong order," He quickly tells me to give him a few seconds and he would be back out with my correct order, I offered the incorrect items back to him and was about to follow him back in to save him a trip back out, Partha said "it's ok keep them, I'll be right back, you can wait here." shortly after he was back out with my burgers. My mother and I thanked him and she asked for his name telling him how much we appreciated him rushing out to catch us before we left, and how disappointing it would've been to reach home only to find out they hadn't given us our correct order. He said that's why he rushed out after me, he didn't want to miss us. She asked him if there was a number we could call to let them know he was doing a great job, he humbled suggested to just leave a google review online. She informed him that we definitely would be leaving a review. It's sad that Patha's great service is such a rarity today, if he isn't' the manager he should be and I hope that someone from the company sees this review and gives credit where it's due. Thank you Partha my mother and I enjoyed the burgers and onion rings, please keep up the wonderful service! Nowadays people are not always recognized for their great service, they're quick to complain and not commend someone for doing a great job. which is why I wanted to make sure I wrote this review. place’ is absolutely a horrible mess, ive ordered here before with my family and they were a great before but now its the worst. The last 4 times i ordered here they either gave me something completely different from what i asked or messed up my food. The last time I got food from here I had it delivered on the Uber Eats app and I got 2 buddy burgers, one for me and my friend. And I asked them to put lettuce on there because when I saw the menu it didn’t originally have lettuce in it. When the food came, I opened the bag and found both burgers were just two pieces of lettuce as if they were replacements for buns and a single Pattie inbetween. Nothing else. I get that having the lettuce as buns is something you can actually get from A&W, but all I put on my order was “2 Buddy burgers, + EXTRA LETTUCE, + EXTRA PATTIE” and to see what was the in bag was honestly disappointing. I’m not sure if they were understaffed that day or not, which I doubt is the problem because they had enough staff the other 3 times I went, but it shouldn’t be this hard to fill out a simple order. I opened my Uber Eats app again and asked for a refund which thankfully they gave me. Me and my friend tried eating the “burger” we received anyways and they were cold and tasted funny. We ended up just throwing them away and ordering Tim Hortons instead.

If you’re considering getting food from this location or any of the close neighbouring ones, just don’t. They are equally as bad up to recently. If you’re anywhere else like in Toronto they do A&W far better. Or just order from somewhere else until these people get their...
