with a penchant for finding hidden gems, I recently found myself at Montgomery’s on Marine Drive in White Rock, drawn in by the absence of a lineup. Prices here are on par with the other eateries along the strip, so I thought, why not give it a shot?
The service, delivered by a group of friendly teenagers, was welcoming and pleasant. I decided to splurge on the homemade tartar sauce, though in hindsight, it was an expenditure I could have done without—$2 and some change for a lackluster accompaniment. When my order of fish and chips arrived, I couldn’t help but notice the solitary nature of the experience; no lineup, no rush, just me and my thoughts.
The fish and the breading although crispy, was disappointingly thin, and the chips that came with it bore the telltale signs of an oil batch past its prime. To make matters worse, they were unsalted and devoid of flavor, much like the fish itself. The homemade tartar sauce, which I had hoped would elevate the dish, turned out to be nothing more than a bland mixture of mayo and lemon juice, lacking any of the zest or tang I crave in a good tartar.
It’s unfortunate because Montgomery’s has the charm of a mom-and-pop shop, but the execution left much to be desired.
If you’re in search of quality fish and chips, you’d be better off exploring the other options nearby. But if you’re in a rush and need something quick, Montgomery’s might suffice—just keep your...
Read moreI wish I could give the food at Montgomery's a better rating but I had high hopes and was very disappointed tonight. We ordered the fish tacos and I asked if there was a creamy/mayo type dressing. I was told there was not - upon receiving my order I discovered there is in fact a coleslaw base that is dressed in a mayo based sauce. Some may like that, I do not and was disappointed given I specifically asked whether this was in the dish. Worse than that however was that the piece of fish you are served is smaller than the palm of your hand and is then split between the two tacos such that the fish barely fits halfway across the taco. The taco shell itself is filled with the slaw and that really overpowers the floundering tiny piece of fish. I actually went to a different fish and chip shop and just ordered a side of one piece of fish to fill the second taco as I had to put both pieces from Montgomery's in one of the tacos just to balance the flavors. The single side order of fish from another shop was less than $10 and easily double to the size of the piece of fish in Montgomery's tacos which cost over $17. Needless to say, and sadly I won't be ordering fish tacos from...
Read moreI'd like to start off by saying we walked the whole entire strip to every single restaurant to look at the menu the people serving it and the smells of course and this was the best decision for sure by far smelled great looked great and the people were super friendly.
I got the beef cheeseburger which was really good sauce was perfect it was not dry the onions were nice and crunchy same with the lettuce. I also got it with a side of coleslaw which was amazing not too saucy very fresh complimented the burger really well.
The gf got the 2 piece cod with chips they actually ended up giving her three pieces which was quite nice it was nice tender and flaky and the chips were done perfectly with a little bit of vinegar and ketchup on it was marvelous.
Very happy we decided to go to this place instead of all the others. Our total bill for everything was $42 . Which for the strip is actually quite reasonable no complaints
