I have been going here for many years starting when I lived in the area as a child. I have many fond memories of Italian sodas and cappuccinos sitting on the patio with my dad.
The food is great and the location is prime. You will also receive amazing service as long as you are not perceived as a disabled, brown, backpack carrying, dog walking, vegetarian queerdo.
I went by Riley Grae to pick up some cute new things because I've been recovering from foot surgery and wanted to get out of the house. I hadn't eaten yet so I decided rather than go to Thom Bargen which is my usual coffee shop I would stop at Bar I because they do food as well.
I didn't get a bag from Riley Grae just kind of took it with me and was putting it in my backpack. So I show up at the patio, set Daisy (my dog) and my bag up, sit there for a few minutes, and realise nobody's seeing me or whatever so I picked Daisy up and I poked my face into the restaurant.
I asked for a menu and an iced coffee with oat milk. The staff member gives me a menu and eventually comes out with my coffee when they do, I gave my order, the Buddha bowl.
When asked whether I want any additional protein with that, I said I don't because it's a salad full of chickpeas and tofu. What other protein do I need beyond that?
I chat with some of the other patrons and lo and behold everybody starts getting their food before I do. By that point I need to go to the bathroom so I go inside and discover that the one accessible washroom is locked.
I ask if there is a key and whether or not I can get into it and they say well it's the staff bathroom, and I say "That's great I need the bars can you please open the washroom?", at which point they agree to let me use the single accessible washroom.
I get in there and it is absolutely jam-packed full of storage and miscellaneous junk and so it is not accessible. There is no proper clearance or ability to get to the toilet if you are using any kind of mobility aid which I thankfully had chosen not to because I don't need them for short trips.
I quickly use the bathroom and exit and go back to my table at which point lo and behold the waiter who had previously taken my order says something to the effect of "Sorry we missed you. Did you want to order something?" and I replied that yes I would in fact like the buddha bowl I already ordered half an hour earlier. As it was the same individual who took my order, he stated that he would pay for it and that he apologised for having forgotten to key it in.
As a result of this series of interactions both my lunch and coffees were paid for by the staff.
Why? I am guessing they assumed I was going to dine and dash I guess so they didn't bother treating me like a paying customer.
Unfortunately for them I will never be a paying customer of theirs again.
I will not make the same mistake and I will always go to Thom Bargen across the street who have never treated me differently regardless of how I appear to them on any...
Read morewe walked in, went to the patio and sat down after sitting there for five minutes. I decided I should go inside to ask if we needed to be seated talk to the waitress she said oh yeah, pick any chair someone will be with you shortly which we did after waiting another 10 minutes, the waitress brought us water and told her she’d be back with mayonnaise, after waiting another 15 minutes she came back and asked us if we were ready to order. I said we have no menus or even drink menus. She informed us that there was no drink menu so I ordered my husband and myself a Budweiser and she told us she’d be back with mayonnaise , another 10 minutes goes by she finally came back and looked at the menu drank all of our beer while waiting and then she came to us another 15 to 20 minutes later and asked us what we wanted. We told her nothing at this point we were furious, upset and disgusted , so if you’re looking to go to a good place that has very good service this is not the place you’d be waiting a very...
Read moreService was terrible and the waiter/bartender was incredibly rude. My friend and I chose to eat dinner here tonight but after what we experienced, both of us are incredibly inclined to never return. The service was terrible even though the place was relatively empty (maybe 10-15 people when we arrived). When taking my friends order, the male bartender stopped, looked at her and said "that's a lot of food." Then later on after we got our food, my friend asked another bartender for hot sauce. The original bartender saw she had this and said to her "someone gave you my special hot sauce?" My friend didn't understand what he meant so asked "what?" While walking away, the bartender replied "it was a joke, Jesus Christ." I have never experienced this level of pure rudeness from a bartender before nor have I ever felt inclined to post a negative review about any place. We will definitely not be returning and I will be sharing my experience with everyone...
