I went out with the girlfriend to an evening meal here, at the Pembina location, and what a trainwreck.
Firstly, I will compliment the atmosphere. They were able to provide a comfortable atmosphere and implememt a design choice correctly. However, this may be the only nice thing I have to say about the place.
The menu was on the wall, which was very concise, with the pricey cost next to it. I figured I was in for some nice Japanese/Korean supper with a modern atmospheric twist. Wrong!
I was astonished to find no classics on the sushi section, nor anywhere on the menu for that matter. I chose the kimchi udon noodles. My girlfriend got a raw salmon salad. My and her meals were served on disposable paper plates (?!?!?) and with disposable, low-quality chopsticks; our forks were real steel cutlery, but mine was actually dirty! Absolutely unacceptable and obnoxious for our X$30 night out. But it gets worse...
The food: terrible. Prepared in enough oil to out-grease McDonalds. It was very unfortunate to find that at the bottom of my paper bowl. However, what do you expect from a joint thats essentially over-priced fast-food.
My other problem with the place was the staff. They were all young female nationals of an Asian country. Which would be fine if the place served some sort of specialty ethnic food (IE: Pho Hoang serves Vietnamese cuisine and therefore has Vietnamese staff). Blatantly racist and exclusive feel to witness this consciously. It makes me think I'm purposefully unwelcomed due to being non-Asian. Shame on the owners for hiring only one ethnic group (if you can count 'asian' as an ethnicity).
All together: over priced, awful food, discriminatory hiring management, unwelcoming environment and not worth the trip. Go to MOMO's or Kimchi...
Read moreWent in July 12th for a really late lunch (on King street location). It was empty however the staff were busy most likely preparing for supper. The young woman who would take our order was less than enthused that we took a couple minutes to decide what me an my partner wanted. Perhaps she was tired of her job. The restaurant was clean. Anyways, I was excited to try their ramen but it was not available. So we ordered a burrito and a Poke bowl. The ingredients were fresh and arranged in a eye pleasing manner. However, my wife disliked the texture of the nori that wrapper her burrito. It was chewy and made her want to gag after the 4th bite. She barely finished the 1st half of her burrito. I've never had a Poke bowl before and will probably be my last from this place. I chose tuna and salmon as my protein. The entire bowl was made with fresh ingredients. However, my palate was not satisfied. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to douse it with copious amounts of soy sauce or what. I was hoping for some sort of aoli or a pleasant tuna tataki sauce to accompany it. Nothing. Don't get me wrong...it was delicious in a boring kind of way. Like how Ritz crackers are tasty but boring...add cheese and a pickle and it all of a sudden becomes the best cracker you've ever had. Chosabi poke bowls need some kind of sauce to elevate it. Just like how a simple fish sauce concoction elevates a Vietnamese vermicelli bowl. Maybe the poke bowl does come with a sauce...if it did, I never got it. As far as value goes, our dollars spent didn't meet our taste buds expectations. I will mention however, I did thoroughly enjoy their Pacman Special on a previous visit. Try...
Read moreAmazing food, awful costumer service. My boyfriend and I casually walked into Chosabi on a weekend to order food. It seemed to me that the girl working the front was more interested to know what nationality we were rather than just doing her job. Although I'm sure she was just trying to have a conversation, it straight up turned out racist. She started out by being amazed and shocked over the fact that we eat raw fish because we don't look Asian, and then she proceeded to assume what background my boyfriend was. However, she assumed right, she continued by saying, "Yah I just know, I can always tell the difference between you people." Of course I found that super offensive. I would literally never eat there if she was working. Probably the most ignorant way to welcome a costumer into a restaurant. I'm sure her motive wasn't to offend anyone, but never racially profile anyone just because they're darker than you and eat raw fish. Everyone eats raw fish, and not everyone likes to play the "guess my nationality game". FYI Sushi is probably one of the most popular meals to have, and essentially we were going to Chosabi to enjoy a good meal. Too bad we were greeted...
