My favorite time to go was for buck a shuck which happens every Wednesday. They have half price charcuterie on Monday. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. When it's good, it can be very good. The food is very consistent. I'm sad they got rid of the beef bourguignon. Service has been hit and miss. They do have a new manager and the last time I went (within last week) the service was excellent. I need to go back a few more times to see if the new standards stick. I've had absolute terrible service as well which is why I couldn't give it a 5 for now (without some confirmation it wouldn't happen again) The following is an explanation of all the recent dishes I've had and took pictures of. Berkshire Pork was done very well. There is a lot of fat on there however, so if that's not your thing, you might want to skip it. If you like pork belly you'll probably really like this. The portion is very generous. Half chicken is tasty. Meat was moist. The cranberry vinegar provides a nice and balanced contrast. The last time i had the calamari I was underwhelmed. It was a bit limp. The flavor was ok, but I've had better elsewhere. Duck Bruschetta... they did the duck very well. I'm not a huge fan of bruschetta but as a change this was nice and done well. Mussels and frites. I have to say the fries are some of my favorites. This is my style. The last time I had it, it wasn't done as well as other times, but even mediocre for its normal standard, its still better than a lot of other places. The mussels were ok. Lots were very small, but you can't control what the stock you get in is sometimes. The bread they serve with your meal is very good. They have at least two kinds. One is a focaccia and the other I'm not sure? They serve it warm. If you're eating in the bar sometimes they don't automatically serve it with your food. So you might need to ask. Clam and bacon pasta... the one time I had it, I was undwhelmed. It probably didn't help that I had been to Italian restaurants that had very good pasta... Maybe they had an off day and it was just that one dish that was not up to its standard par? It was really dry... I personally won't be ordering it again. Profiteroles and Chevre cheesecake. The profiteroles are good, but the cheesecake really shines. I love goat cheese so I might be a bit biased. They do it very well here. One of my favorite desserts. Beef brisket. Exceptionally tender, they cook it till it flakes and breaks apart easily. I asked my friend who hails from Kansas City what he thought. He said it wasn't memorable enough either way. I thought it was solidly good, but maybe not fantastic. Charcuterie is where Peasant has excelled at. Chorizo meatballs was a skip for me. I wasn't a huge fan of the flavors. Neither was my friend. He did eat it all but wasn't loving it. Raw oysters is a must for buck a shuck (Wednesdays). Though at these small sizes, I would not want to pay $3 per piece. In Winnipeg however, I don't think there's much choice if you want oysters. Having recently gone to Omaha and having oysters at Plank, I see a comparison. The Copa. Picture of the drink is actually a non alcoholic one. I was very pleased to find they had a small list of non alcoholic beverages. There were only 3 mocktails, but its still nice to be remembered (I have an allergy). This pretty much tasted like a pina colada with a bit of a modification.

Dined without a reservation around 7pm on a Wednesday night. When we arrived it was a busy night because of $1 oysters and a smaller sized restaurant. We waited for a table at the bar top and got one way before the time quote which was a nice surprise. The drinks were booze forward and sophisticated but very tasty, I tried the mike wazowski which was a floral tasting drink as well as the penicillin which had an unusually interesting Smokey after taste. My partner who doesn’t like to taste his liquor tried the hotel Nacional and he enjoyed it. For appetizers we got the calamari and it was cooked perfectly with what I can only imagine was house made tzatziki as it was the best I’ve had. Our mains came out perfectly timed and looking gorgeous. I got the steak frites medium rare and my partner got the lakeshore pickerel. My steak was cooked perfectly and was way bigger than I had initially imagined, it was also perfectly seasoned. The pickerel was the only reason this review has a 4/5 stars, as there seemed to be only about 3oz of pickerel on the dish and they were quite bland. On the menu it doesn’t state the protein portion size for this dish and my partner was dissatisfied. In the picture you can see my steak portion compared to his pickerel portion and featuring the penicillin cocktail. The price difference between the steak and pickerel was only $2. I wish I could give a shout-out to the bartender who helped us out and our server in the lounge but I didn’t get there names!! If your reading this, great service, service always elevates an evening out. Will be coming back!

Day 12 of my pre birthday celebrations and in pursuit of discovering the new (possible) home city’s food. Today has been the best meal we’ve had so far. This restaurant is in the historic Exchange District of YWG and housed in one of the many turn-of-the-century beautifully preserved masonry structures in one of Canada’s designated historic sites. The mode was casual and the ambiance had this quirky old world charm. Service was outstanding! 10/10! We ordered: Starters: *CHICKEN LIVERS. $19 Pan-fried with brandy peppercorn sauce, baguette toast. I hate liver but I loved the rich flavours of the sauce. WOWZA and YUMZA! The president said the livers had this amazing flavour profile and had beautiful texture. He finished the entire dish. 10/10! * PORK DRY RIBS. $16 Baby back ribs braised then fried until crisp, with chili and lime. The ribs was soft but not fall-off-the-bone so they were just perfect. The caramelized crust added more flavours and texture to these delectable bites. WOWZA and YUMZA! 10/10! Mains: *HOUSE SAUSAGE MEATBALL PAPPARDELLE. $28 Smoked tomato and pepper cream sauce, garlic, onions, arugula and chêvre cheese. The pasta was cooked to perfection and the sauce was a real winner. The meatballs were just ok. 8/10! *PORK CHOP. $36 Roasted root vegetables, green beans, pickled apples and grainy mustard jus. The chop was pure perfection. So tender, juicy and just packed with incredible flavours. The mustard jus elevated the sensational texture and flavours to another level. WOWZA and YUMZA 20/10!!! 🔥😍😋😱💕 A remarkable culinary experience for sure.

My partner and I went here last week for my birthday. We are both super excited to try it out. Unfortunately, a few things went wrong, the first was that we got our appetizers before getting our bottle of wine, which we found quite odd and inquired about where the wine was, (place had 1 other table), it came 10 mins after that. Our server was a little rude after that, probably because we made her look like she wasn’t doing her job, but she wasn’t. She wouldn’t make eye contact and was very short with us and would start with to walk away before we were even done speaking. And for our main, we ordered a medium rare steak and it was way over well done. at that point we had spent much time waiting around that we didn’t want to have them redo it. We just wanted to try and salvage the night and have a fine rest of my birthday. (My partner put in the reso notes it was my birthday so we also found it odd that there was zero acknowledgement of that). Unfortunately, there were really great aspects about it like location, interesting cuisine, and great decor. However, the service and the food didn’t exactly match our expectations.

This is a awesome place and the steak sandwich was delicious. Very good and attentive service. Went today for lunch. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Had the gnochhi and it was delish. It could have been a little warmer tho. My husband had pulled pork sandwich. A wee bit too much bbq sauce. Went today and had the steak sandwich and fries and salad. Hubby had his with onion soup. Ate in the bar. Always great food here and service great too. Easy access by bus and car tho parking could be hard. Went for lunch today and ordered from the new menu. The yam fritters were very good and plentiful. Lots of good flavors. Hubby had corned beef sandwich and fries. Really just a ham and cheese with think pieces of meat with fat throughout and fries on the brink of being overcooked close to burnt. Worst meal he said he had there. Usually so good.

Loved it. Came for my birthday. I had a zero proof Sam Ross (also known as The Penicillin) which was amazing. They served some nice breads, with whipped butter. We had the escargot vol au vent to start. The escargot itself was rubbery. The hilight of the dish were the roast cherry tomatoes, in the sauce. I think that should be the focus of this dish. We had Gnocchi and the special, which was their take on Sheppard's pie. The Gnocchi melts in your mouth. It's amazing. Absolutely get it. The Sheppard's pie was good; it was served in a hot cast iron skillet, with mashed potatoes. The meat was a combination of beef and bison. It had nice flavours. Unfortunately the presentation of the potatoes reminded me of something not so appetizing. Service was great. It was quite loud in the restaurant, but the ambiance was nice.
