Would like to share a very positive and great dining experience at Golden Elephant. The entrance is next to the reception of the Hotel. There was plenty of parking for the hotel guests where we had parked. Very conveniently located and it is easy to park. When we get in the restaurant, the owner is there to welcome us with a warm smile. This is the first time we have dinner here, I hope it is open for lunch everyday as well, as there are a lot of good dishes that we would like to try. We already thought of what we will order for our next and upcoming visits. It's a pity that my parents went back to Hong Kong after visiting us a while ago. I am sure my parents like all of their food for sure. I love tomato soup very much, so without hesitation, we ordered the Crab meat vermicelli in tomato soup, it is on the special menu page. Another dish we ordered was Pad Thai with Tofu, as my husband eats veggie and seafood only. My little one ordered the curry chicken with rice (spicy) for his own consumption. Just that the tomato soup is not sour (this is my own expectation for any restaurant) to be fair the vermicelli in soup is great, their portion is a highlight, which is huge, we have been visiting different provinces in Canada, honestly, this portion is no long existing as often as in the past when I first visited Toronto more than 20 years ago. Maybe there would still be some Chinese restaurants in Vancouver and Toronto would still have this large portion but obviously not Vietnamese or Thai restaurants anywhere. The portions of the other two dishes are huge and I am sure every plate can feed at least two people, so bear in mind, order a few of different dishes to try and share with your friends, it would be the best. I am very happy to see that a restaurant is so nicely decorated, with a friendly owner and large portions of food generously provided to their customers. Wish you all stay well and good and continue to provide delicious and fresh food to people in Winnipeg, I really appreciate their heart and action, and I could see how thoughtful the owner is and he is very helpful when I heard a customer who is ordering takeout for his wife, probably they forgot what a particular dish is called. The owner is so patient, trying his best to help him out. It is difficult to find this positive attitude anywhere easily now.
We are thinking of having fried rice on our next visit, I would like to try the beef tenderloin in broth, in Cantonese it is called "CHING TONG NGOU NAM", Baked rice with seafood or normally people would be ordering Pork chop, but due to our restrictions, we can only order seafood to share...fried Singaporean vermicelli with curry paste, fried Gwai Tew and so much more...
Thank you very much, the owner and the staff of Golden Elephant. We will visit again very soon...
Read moreDefinitely get good value. This restaurant is located inside of the quality inn on pembina. You need to really through the hotel to get to it. From the outside I was expecting a standard Asian restaurant. When I walked inside I was surprised by how well appointed the dining room was. As another reviewer commented, it was spotless inside. Portions are huge and prices are moderate. For the pricing its a great place to grab lunch or dinner for an affordable price in a very nice setting.
We went more than once so there's a long list of items. Pro tip: their BBQ Meats are great. I really liked the bbq chicken skewers. Their vermicelli also has it in top for a great price.
They make a lot of things in house here. I have pricing for most items but not all.
Pad Thai -this was a crowd favorite BBQ chicken Skewers $8.95 - my number one pick. Salad rolls $6.95 - would recommend getting it with BBQ meat instead of with shrimp the way we did. Banh mi -the Bread is fantastic when fresh. It is ok when you wait but definitely recommend eating right away. we got the cold meat (from the menu) one as that was recommended, however it should be called cold cuts. For that kind of sandwich It actually is very good however, most of my friends I think would prefer the barbecue meat inside. It just lends so much extra flavor. Deluxe beef pho large $10.95 - definitely get a good value. I liked the soup. I'm not super into pho however. I tend to prefer my meat flavored or marinated. R $8.95 xl #l$12.95 (other pricing for the sizes we did not order) Deluxe vermicelli $10.95 again another great value item. I did find the noodles a little odd as I'm used to having drier ones. You can tell these ones were freshly cooked. Their lunch special if seafood with fried rice in a white sauce and their deep fried pork cutlet with fried rice in red sauce are good value. $14.95 includes small appetizer (I recommend the shrimp dumplings as they were fried perfectly in a light wonton crisp) over the more authentic meat slice (I can't remember as it was from my earlier visit). I'm not just into fried food but it was done very well. It also comes with dessert. That day we had also ordered the mini banh mi sandwich which we really enjoyed.
It's a huge menu to navigate. I don't know if I would recommend every dish, but if you do choose the right ones I think most people will love this place. We got it right on the second time. Had it just been from my first visit I might have given it a four instead.
Service is friendly but needs work. The price point where you get great value, and due to the delicious bbq meats is why I give this 5 Stars
Parking is available in the parking lot of the quality inn. So pretty easy to...
Read moreI was in town visiting and an acquaintance recommended this restaurant. To be honest, after seeing some of the recent reviews, I was initially a bit skeptical. Needless to say, I am pleasantly surprised with the restaurant’s atmosphere, service, and food.
The Golden Elephant is located in the Quality Inn. Parking is readily available. It is spacious, clean, and comfortable. The service is friendly and efficient for a busy Saturday lunch hour. I cannot speak for the other reviews who have cited a negative experience on the service but I can say that I personally do not frequent restaurants based on the friendliness of their waitstaff. It is a bonus! The server who took our order was polite and brought our food out quickly. When we were paying, the owner was very pleasant and asked how our meal was. What more can one ask for?!
On the food - it was great! I grew up here in Winnipeg and have found that there is a theme amongst restaurants to load their soup noodles with MSG and salt. After living in Alberta and BC, I realized that it may just be a Winnipeg thing. I had the laksa which was appropriately seasoned. The rest of the table had salad rolls, wonton soup, and pad Thai. Everything was fresh and came in large portions. Everyone at the table was happy with their meal.
I highly recommend The Golden Elephant if you’re in the...
