Disappointed and underwhelmed. I gave them two stars, as I like the hot chocolate I had from them last winter. But yesterday’s experience was subpar, went on a Saturday evening. We were the only customers there, and there were two staff working. They rang my friend’s order first. Since there were two of them (which is usual for a coffee shop). I went right up to the till after my friend to give my order. The two of them were both at the bar, chatting and making two drinks which took longer than it should and is not a two-person job (I know that because I used to be a barista). I waited by the ordering area for 3+ minutes. (People may think it’s not a long time. But we were the only people there, and since there are two of them, why can’t they take my order right after my friend’s then proceed to their chatter by the bar. It gives a poor impression of the baristas and the cafe by ignoring a customer that was clearly in plain view and for the customers to hear the baristas chatting nonstop by the bar). One of them finally rang my order, got the size of my drink wrong, and made it quicker than my friend’s. Midway through making my drink another customer came and they quickly attended to him. So, I want to understand why they had to make me wait when they can clearly do better than that? This may appear petty to some, but the service was subpar and the drinks were mediocre, too – which I didn’t expect because I liked the last one I had before.
PS My friend, who was also an ex-barista, said that maybe one of the staff are on break. Then they shouldn’t have been on the floor, and if they’re helping the other, shouldn’t it be faster than...
Read moreThe experience of the baristas I have had (both in the very recent and more distant past) have been incredibly lackluster. I ordered a couple of milk drinks from them, and every time the milk was steamed very poorly.
This is a shame because I think some of their beans are actually quite decent. I was able to make some good coffee with their beans at home, and they used to offer some very unique naturally processed coffees.
At least once I had a beautiful cortado, however the experience of the baristas are awfully atrocious. I hope there is an experienced barista somewhere in the company to offer them some more rigorous training. Hell, I reckon even watching a Hendrick or Hoffman video on how to steam milk or dial in a shot could do these baristas wonders.
Edit: I also forgot to mention their email newsletter. Spelling mistakes in multiple areas, grammar and clarity issues, peculiar formatting, drinks they advertise lack descriptions... It looks like a middle school ELA project. (Which is unfair to middle school students, to...
Read moreOffensively Disappointing I ordered a piece of coffee cake and a 12 oz (because they don't have 16 oz cups) Americano. I ordered coffee cake because, dispite selling muffins they have no mechanism to heat them (why would you even bother... let me guess, no butter either?) The coffee cake was harder and dryer than a biscotti. The staff offerred to replace it but the only other thing they had that didn't look like it came from the bakery at a Safeway was, you guessed it, the cold and butterless muffin. I took one bite. The taste made me think of a dry Costco muffin. It went in the garbage too. Alas, so did the coffee about 20 mins later. It tasted like someone used the hot water to wash pennies. It was WEAK. I'm guessing this place uses only 1 shot of espresso in a 12 oz cup instead of two -the industry standard. Come down to Johnston Terminal folks. Try the coffee at Harrisons but bring a tissue because this...
