Before I moved to Winnipeg from Ontario in August 2021, I planned to celebrate my new prairie life with some boxes of oxtail and jerk chicken. When I finally learned how to travel to Miss Christine's by bus, I set my eat date. It took me over an hour by bus to get to her restaurant but it was more than worth it. Like Mark Wiens, I travel for food.
I arrived early to scope out a place to eat under the blue prairie sky (a bench in a nearby park) if I was too impatient to wait until I got home. It was an extremely windy day so as I walked west of the Chalet Hotel, I got a strong whiff of some delicious home cookin.' I thought to myself, "Someone needs to invite me over." Well wouldn't you know it was Miss Christine who invited me over for dinner! Follow your nose, it always know! Toucan Sam.
Just after 5:00 pm, my pick-up time, customer after customer filed into her small restaurant to get their orders. My excitement was building and I was close to fainting from the smell of food. I loved watching Christine as she magically disappeared and reappeared from her kitchen with each order which was reminiscent of my grandma.
Then came my food. When I picked up my take-out bag, I nearly collapsed due to the weight of my order; Christine is serious about keeping us all at a healthy weight! I almost ran to the park bench because the aromas were killing me softly. Miss Lauren Hill. Roberta Flack.
The oxtail was so soft and tender and there was a hint of heat. Normally I am not a fan of salads, but this one was fresh, colourful and topped with a light vinaigrette dressing. The rice and peas held the gravy really well.
Next time I will request a spicy oxtail with more gravy. Yum. Next time I will get an order of the ever elusive fried chicken and jerk mac and cheese! It's like pre-ordering for an i-phone! Much love...
Read moreFolks, let me tell you about Miss Christine’s Jamaican food – it’s a whole vibe with regards to the food & her energy. The jerk chicken there is next level - I don’t know how the woman does it, but her jerk chicken is just DIFFERENT. But what really makes the place special is Miss Christine herself. She’s a total rockstar – energetic, real, and passionate about her cooking.
And let me tell you, her spicy gravy sauce? Legendary stuff! Miss Christine, you need to bottle that up, patent it, and sell it online cause it’s pure gold and makes the food contrast so much in flavour, which I love. Everything she cooks is top-notch, from the meat to the spices, you can taste the quality in every bite. Very fresh ingredients.
But what I love most is Miss Christine’s no-nonsense attitude. She’s straight to the point, no small talk, and I respect that. It’s like eating good food with your cool aunt who tells it like it is. She loves engaging and getting to know her customers on a personal level, which is rare to find in most restaurants, especially in boring Winnipeg.
So, if you’re looking for some killer Jamaican food served with a side of an energetic woman who is overly kind and generous with her portions, Miss Christine’s is the spot. Big shoutout to Miss Christine – keep doing your thing, I love your food & energy! Can’t wait to come back for more. 🙌🏽❤️ P.S. looking forward to the day I get to see you rocking them VVS diamond...
Read moreFood used to be great. My last experience was, let’s say: disgusting and disappointing
I went to pick up tree food from the new Provencher location. I had ordered a single Jerk chicken with rice and peas, there was a gentlman waiting in front of me as well. After waiting for almost 15mn, the lady (the owner) shows up with my food and the other clients, hands it to me, turn to the other client and goes: « I gave you too extra pieces since you’re a regular. » which is totally fine.
She hands me the machine to pay, i reply that I am paying cash, I made sure to tip her. She hands me the bag (which felt cold) and I kindly asked her if I could get a plastic fork. She said: « it’s already in there my dear » even tho i could feel it wasn’t in the bag, I took her word for it and sssumed it’s packed with the box. I say thank you so much you’re the best, then she proceeds to make the sassiest comment: « you don’t wanna eat it with your hands now right » - I didn’t think much of it until I left and got the car. Checked the bag, no forks, and the food was cold for a 15mn wait.
Very disappointed since I use to have lots of respect for the lady but her business isn’t what it used to be when she first opened. I was a faithful supporter, avoided ordering through skip the dishes to help her business. But sadly, I will be taking my business and family somewhere else next time. There is a lot of work to be done starting with the...
