My husband, myself and our 28 year old son dined here on July 18, 2025. My son was treating my husband and myself to dinner to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.
When we were seated, we were asked if we were celebrating anything special and my son informed them that, yes, we were celebrating our anniversary and he was treating us.
We got a simple "happy anniversary" and nothing else. We watched as serving staff sang happy birthday to several tables who were celebrating birthdays. As well, they birthday celebrant received COMPLIMENTARY desserts. My son list his job in March due to the tariffs and is on EI and therefore can ill afford to spend a lot of money, so he saved up for MONTHS to be able to treat us to a nice dinner. When the bill came, my son discovered that we had been charged for all 3 desserts. In total the bill came to $177 after tax and $195 with tip. That is a HUGE amount. We would NEVER have ordered ANY dessert if we thought it would not be complimentary at least for my husband and I. My son didn't inform the server as he was embarrassed and did not want to ruin the evening by complaining. Later, when we got home, my son informed us of all this as we did not see the bill. He only had about $300 in his account, so this was a HUGE hit for him. So my husband and I had to help out later by giving our son the cost of the 3 desserts and 2 of the alcoholic drinks.
My son was VERY disappointed that no staff members sang to us or made a fuss of ANY kind and then on top of that, they didn't even comp dessert! He asked me later why the server even bothered to inquiriy as to whether or not we were celebrating since they didn't even acknowledge the anniversary! So what was the point of ASKING?
Also, when we were seated, the server came by and asked if we wanted cutlery. We said yes, but she only brought 2 cutlery settings, so we had to flag her down to ask for a 3rd one. After a few minutes, a different staff member noticed we didn't have cutlery and brought us a 3rd setting, then about 5 minutes later, our original server came by with the missing cutlery, so now we had 4 sets of cutlery. Then we placed our dinner orders. My son and I both ordered the "All-you-can-eat" ribs with fries. My son ordered his fries with gravy, and I ordered mine WITHOUT gravy. The food took a VERY long time to come, and when it finally DID come, my son's fries had NO gravy and my fries were stone cold. So then we had to WAIT for the server to come by (took another 8 or so minutes before she came back) and tell her that my fries were cold and my son had no gravy. So after ANOTHER 8 or so minutes, the server FINALLY returned with a side of gravy in a VERY small container, barely enough to cover his fries - and he paid EXTRA for gravy! The server brought my fries at the same time, which, thankfully, were piping hot.
Not impressed with the experience and will likely NOT...
Read moreI go to this restaurant pretty much once every two weeks and have been always happy with their food quality and service until last night. I invited my friend for dinner last night and my experience was terrible. First we waited for almost 5 minutes before we got greeted by some one. we got our booth and the waitress showed up. We told her about the coupon we had for free appetizer and ordered food. First thing I realized was that the quality and portion of the appetizer was way less than what I normally get. I did not mention anything and let it pass hoping that main course will be better. When the main food (steak) arrived I soon realized that it had not been cooked to my liking (I had asked for medium). The waitress showed up after almost 10 minutes to check on us and I told her about the steak. She agreed that steak is not even medium rare! She said that they would make another one. So... another 15 minutes till we get our new steak.. and you guessed it was still not cooked properly. The waitress looked at it again and she agreed that the new steak was also more of a rare steak rather than medium. I told her almost half of each steak was OK but the other half was not... she said I don't know if it is the cook or the grill..I told her it is fine we don't want to wait any more just bring our bill and IF you're going to through away the uncooked steaks (4 raw pieces) I will rather take them home for my dog. she said I will take it to the back to show it to the cook and then box it. After another 5 minutes she came back with the bill.. it was unbelievable that they charged us for the $ 35 steak that they could not make right!! I was shocked.. but decided to not say anything and write this review instead. only after the payment went through she went back and brought our box. when I opened it I saw only 1 of the four pieces!! SO I think it is fair to assume that the left overs were not going to be thrown away, they rather use them in other FOODS!! That is an interesting fact to know!! We left the one piece of steak on the table and left....
As I said, I have been to Montana's several times, whenever they screwed up something (not properly cooked food or even late service) they made it right by either waiving the cost of that specific food and offering free desert. My most recent experience was nothing but disappointing. Will not go back ..
Update: The manger was very nice and tried his best to make my next visit as pleasant as possible. I changed the rating to 4. Taking one star off just becuase of the issues at the...
Read moreI was at St. Vital Centre and decided to eat there instead of my usual location near Polo Park on Empress. I had the 10oz Sirloin, and it was cooked just the way I like it. My sauteed mushrooms were nice and too hot to eat right out of the kitchen, as they should be, in their cast iron frying pans (2 orders). Quick service for my drink refills (can not drink alcohol due to my many Rx's). All in all, I can't think of anything that was different from the great food & service I get at the Polo Park location. ••••• Will go there again as it's a bit easier to get to by bus. ••••• There is nothing wrong with the Empress location if you own a car, but I walk with a cane and no longer own a car, so easy bus service is a must, and the St. Mary's Road location has that with the #14 right out of downtown. ••••• I'm at the St.Marys location as I type this: Had a fantastic 12oz Striploin with FFs and two(2) orders of their Sautéed Mushrooms. It's what I always order and have never been disappointed with my meals both at the Empress or the St.Marys location. I go to the St.Marys location as the Empress location. As I said before, the only reason I go to the St.Marys location instead of the Empress location is because I ride the bus and the Empress location is not served very well by the bus. ••••• I forgot I took a pic of their Happy Hour specials.
Haven't been able to go there much since Nov/Dec (soft food diet due to dental work), but I get a craving for their mushrooms now and then.
I've now got a couple of nice ¼" thick airtight glass containers from Walmart (one for the fast food & the other for a couple of orders of mushrooms). This way, I can stop by during the winter.
The mushrooms are worth the trip alone, and there's a McDs,a BK & a Wendy's all within a stone's throw from the Montana's. I will have to make sure my next apartment has good bus service back to there.
I only wish they had a steak & ribs combo 2024Sept12 Felt like a beer. Discovered you can get the Sizzling Chicken Breast for $5.00. This is the same chicken brest that they use in their burgers, fajitas & salads. Add an order of FFs for $3.99 and the Mushroom Skillet for $5.00, and you have a nice snack to go with your Molson Canadian 14oz for $4.99. Great service from Yana. I have never had a bad time at any of Winnipeg's Montana's (Are they...
