Went there this past weekend with my girlfriend. We loved the decor, the staff were very friendly, and taste-wise the food was good - the appetizer was wonderfully flavourful, and the wine selection - though pricey - was also quite nice.
I unfortunately for the time being however feel that I cannot give this place a full 5-star recommendation, due to the fact that my girlfriend and I had been at the restaurant for nearly two hours, and had asked no less than three times where our food was before it was finally brought out to us. When it finally was, I was quite frustrated not only by the wait time and repeated asks, but that when my steak (which I had ordered as medium-rare) finally came out, looked a fair bit more blue than it should have. Furthermore, both my and my girlfriend's food was not what I would consider hot, but like it had been only kept warm by a heating lamp so as to not entirely lose its heat. The mashed potatoes and brocolini were also warm, but nowhere near hot by that point, and I found the mashed potatoes a bit dry for my liking, likely due to sitting under a heat lamp for such a length of time.
To the credit of the manager as well as the staff member who was both serving us, and training a new team member at the time, they did offer profuse apologies, and the gentleman who seemed to be the dining room manager was very apologetic as well, offering to make things right by making our entire meal free, which I felt was appropriate considering how unacceptable such a wait was. Even this however turned out to be less than promised...
I'm not sure if there was a miscommunication between the manager and the server who tallied our final order, but we still paid 90 dollars for our wine and appetizer, which while a definite discount, is not exactly my interpretation of making the entire meal free.
At that point however, I was exhausted from having been sat there for over two hours and simply wished to leave, so we paid, and took our desserts to go.
We may still give this place a second chance in the future, as this could very well have been a fluke, but it probably won't be for a good while, as we're not keen on spending $200 on dinner (which would have been our final total) very often, and may be particularly hesitant after...
Read moreMe and my fiancée came from out of town and tried Rae & Jerry’s. Our first impressions were not up to the standard you would expect of a fine dining steak house that’s been around for ages. The decor felt cold and outdated, I understand the look of being an older restaurant but it felt unkept. Prices were quite a bit higher than I expected, when we got our food it was completely not what we were expecting. We ordered a spread which was slices of cold mozzarella, raw tomato’s and raw onions served on a bed of lettuce with blue cheese dressing, everything was very bland and overpowered by the blue cheese. I ordered a rib steak with garlic mash and butternut squash, the squash was not bad other than lacking in some seasoning, the garlic mash had large chunks of potato still left in it and nothing for flavor other than a hint of garlic, my steak I ordered medium rare and it came out with 3 different temps, the rib was rare almost blue while the middle was medium rare and the cap was medium almost well done. My fiancée ordered a prime rib medium rare with steamed broccolini and garlic mash, the potato’s were the same as mine severely under seasoned with large chunks, the broccolini were hardly steamed and basically still raw with literally zero seasoning on it at all, the prime rib was cooked correctly but there was nothing for seasoning even around the outer edges. We brought up the issue with the broccolini with our waitress who gave us a Cesar salad as a substitution, the Cesar had in-house made Cesar dressing which also had nothing for flavor other than a hint of acidity honestly. For drinks I ordered a virgin pina colada which was actually the highlight of my meal, my fiancée ordered a kombucha which as wasn’t bad seeing as it was a pre bottled proveyor bought item. All in all the service wasn’t bad other than the wait staff gossiping and pointing after we had said the appetizer wasn’t what we thought it would be. I will not be returning to this establishment until there is change honestly. It saddens me to see such an iconic restaurant not keep up with the times and slip on quality, I do hope they turn it around and make a comeback...
Read moreNEW REVIEW: I really hate to say this, & really hate leaving bad reviews, especially for one of my fav places but... I've now had 2 subpar experiences here this year & it is so dissapointing as this used to be a solid go to for an excellent steak & meal. Along with excellent service. But now... it's going down hill & I hope they turn it around quickly. The service is slow & horrible. The food takes forever to come (1.5 HOURS from the time we ordered we waited during a lunch service that wasn't even busy!!!) & when it does come it does not have the same the quality or flavor as it used to. They changed the menu & added more options but it may have come at the expense of a sure thing.. before the kitchen dominated in preparing you an excellent meal & now I'd rather go to another steak house who will regularly deliver a well made steak, not as great as the old R&Js steak, but better than what they give you now.. I got the Chicken Pecan salad this last visit as I didn't want to be dissapointed again with the steak & it was just meh, nothing special. Other guests I was with got the steak & was not impressed so I take it the quality is still dropping. The new owners had a sure thing when they took over & just needed to stick to the formula but instead they're messing things up & taking a great restaurant & making it less than. The only thing that is the same is the decor, which hopefully they don't touch that cause that's the only thing working for them... I used to say for years you have to go here, but now I'd say try them if you like, but for a consistent well prepared steak & meal you may want to try another place like Chop or the Keg 😔
