We went for brunch yesterday at Southdale. First time there. The decor is very nice. Clean and “informally classy”. A place in which you’d be comfortable. Smartly decorated. I guess, maybe I was expecting more of an older diner atmosphere, or something, from the name. The staff members were amazing, we were greeted and seated, then talked to by about 3 of the staff members during or time there. Not intrusive in the least, just friendly. I had iced tea, looked up, and there was a “refill” already on its way before I was finished, and served with a smile. The food was prepared quickly and served hot. A couple of minutes later, our sever checked that all was ok, I joked I just tried the toast so far, so in a few more moments she, in a playful way, “checked” again how I was doing with the main dish. Ok, now about the food. Very tasty! My wife had a club sandwich - real turkey- served with crisp (but not over done / greasy) hot French fries (of course I had to try some). I had the Mexican skillet - delicious. Mexican seasoned ground beef, scrambled eggs, sour cream and salsa served on a bed of what I’m assuming are “home made” pan fries. Mmmm mm. Think sort of like breakfast nachos if you’re into that kind of thing, and I am! The ground beef was nicely spiced and teamed with the salsa added a nice “pop”to the flavours of the egg and potatoes. It’s been said “you eat with your eyes first”, and on that note, everything was plated and presented in a pleasant way. We saw a few more dishes come from the kitchen destined for other tables, and each of those looked vey nice as well. I’d totally recommend this place. It seems to me that they take great pride in their business. We noted certificates in the entrance way that, to us anyway, prove that. The appearance, the staff, and the food all make this a worthwhile place for you to...
Read moreMy sister and law, myself and two nieces (one of whom is one and half and in a fairly bulky stroller still) went in, having looked at the takeout specials (between $8-$10) decided that it was just what we were looking for, a nice quiet place with decent priced food. Didn't take long for us to get in, but the hostess sat us at a very awkward table to maneuver, and then proceeded not to ask us if we needed a high chair, so my sister in law went and grabbed it, fine whatever. Then as she's moving it to the table, and I am helping my 5 yr old niece get into her spot (the stroller was in her way with no where else to put it) she asks if we needed the chair moved to put the high chair, (really there was no other place to put it so kind of a silly question). We sit down, take a look at the kids menu, decently priced, $6 for her drink, meal and a dessert. But then we start looking at our menu, and everything is rather expensive, I'm talking $14 + for most things. We ended up settling on a wrap each only to find out that for $12 it didn't even come with fries! We added on fries, which half a basket of normal fries is $4, and you barely get any at all. The waitress was rude, and always seemed to be rushing off (even though there was only us and another table which wasn't even hers) to do what seemed like talking with her coworkers instead of taking care of us. So in total, me, myself, and my nieces meal came to a shocking $50!...
Read moreOrdered for the first time from this place a skillet covered in hollandaise sauce. Sadly I could only look at it as they couldn't send me a plastic fork to eat it...or my carrot cake with. Often you get these things when you order and so I never bother looking for the place where I am to specify it. Unfortunately my work place does not have any cutlery. I hadn't had breakfast so I ended up eating it with my fingers which was quite messy, while hoping no customers saw me eating like a hangry wolf. There should really be at least 3 eggs in this skillet...it felt like mostly large diced potatoes and not much else. I had to ask for no tomatoes, but it's too bad there is no option to substitute something for something else.
The restaurant kindly sent me a little container of caramel sauce that was quite sticky for my cake and fingers (no fork). Thanks for that. A customer caught me with caramel sauce on my face and fingers. Next time I will be sure to specifically request or beg for a plastic fork to eat the food I ordered. Not really worth the 27 bucks it costs to eat when you have to eat it in such a...
