As soon as we walked in, we felt unwelcomed. "You know this is a Chinese restaurant, right?" is what the server said to my partner and I when we came in (neither of us are Chinese). Of course we knew it was a Chinese restaurant, that's exactly why we went!
A Chinese friend of mine took me to this restaurant once before and it was quite good so I decided to take my partner, but our experience was COMPLETELY different from the first time I went. So much that I won't be coming back.
First, the server was very distant and uncaring. He seemed to want to interact with us as little as possible. He brought us our food in silence and didn't ask if we needed anything more. He didn't check how our food was. When I asked for hot sauce he brought it to me without any utensil to spoon it out.
Second, the first time I went with my Chinese friend we were given complimentary yellow tea in a glass. I remember this clearly because hot tea isn't normally served in a glass... The second time when I came with my partner we were given dark brown tea in mugs, which was fine but when a young Chinese group came in after us, they were given the yellow tea in glasses... This isn't a big deal, but it's just a little strange that they would give different guests different kinds of tea. Where's the consistency?
Third, the first time I came with my Chinese friend I ordered a spicy soup broth which was delicious. The second time, I suggested to my partner that he order the same broth. When his soup came it looked NOTHING like how it was when I got it the last time. It looked milky instead of a deep red, and it was nowhere near as spicy as it was last time.
Fourth, I also recommended that my partner get the deep fried squid because I got it last time and it was good. Last time, I took some of the squid home so my partner had a chance to taste it too. When my partner ordered it we both agreed that it was nothing like the first time we ordered, it was very rubbery.
I don't understand why my two experiences were so different, aren't restaurants suppose to be consistent? I hope the differences have nothing to do with who I came with.
I have only written two online reviews in my life, and this is the second. Overall, the experience I had at Ume Yummy the second time was not good. The food was below mediocre and the service made me feel extremely...
Read morePretty cute small place. Inside has 4,5 tables. Seems like a family business to me. Their menu is vast. They offer Hong kong/ Taiwanese/ Chinese food along with munchies and snack in case you don't have a big appetite. They also serve brunch combo during 10am till noon. If you are tired of the same borning canadian chinese menus, this is the place for you to go for something different but not outside of your comfortable zone :)
A big bonus to the restaurant is they serve you hot tea when coming inside and refill it for you. The portion was a lot compared to the price you paid, and its quality is decent/above average. The lady is so nice that she offered to pack the food for us to take home, instead of giving u boxes and let u pack it urself in other restaurants
Overall I would come back to try more different dishes on...
Read moreWe are not experts in Hong Kong style cuisine but were pleased to see more than the usual westernized choices. Our soup was fresh made and delicate in flavor. Ditto a rice with seafood and egg recommended by the server.
It appears family-run and tables were full of local Chinese students. Pricing was exceptionally good value. Menus and specials are mostly written in Chinese so ask advice.
It's a bit tough to find (built into a motel complex) and accessible only Southound on Pembina. U-turn required coming from the other side.
All in all, worth a...
