We visited the place after watching a video from a food blogger and we were excited for it.
When we got to the restaurant, it looked very traditional, normally a good sign in Asia. But everything started to go a bit downwards. It started with the owner throwing the menu at our table and turning her back at us. When we ordered the food, she made us pay upfront (what we thought a bit weird, but ok) and also said that payment could only be made in cash, being that we saw credit card and WeChat Pay signs in the restaurant.
After paying, we were waiting for our order when a Chinese customer came in and got a whole different treatment. She placed her order and, for our surprise, she was not charged upfront.
Once our duck arrived, they showed it to us and started cutting it right next to our table. It looked amazing and juicy, we were looking forward for it. But for our disappointment, we noticed that all the other customers (Chinese) got their whole duck (wings, tights, drums, neck) but we only got served the duck breast, which didn't seem to have much meat, as it was mostly skin and fat.
While we were eating, another table asked for their check and, for our surprise again, they were able to pay with WeChat Pay.
We left the restaurant feeling mistreated for the fact that we were not Chinese. Maybe they have had issues with foreigners in the past, but still it does not justify the mistreatment towards us. The food was good, but not worth for the treatment received by...
Read moreLocated inside the very traditional hutong. It is a traditional Beijing Shi He Yuan building, the entrance itself is very historical. Once entered, there is a traditional fire pit to grill the Peking duck. They are grilled with wood. And there are many photos of the rich and famous VIP visited the restaurant. For persons of four, they recommend that we try their set meals for about RMB500. It was an excellent choice. It came with a whole duck with two cooking styles, grilled and deep fried. And there was a table full of side dishes, mainly made from different parts of the duck. The grilled duck was one of the best we have ever tested in Beijing. The duck skin and meat wrapped with their unique sauce tasted excellent. The deep fried duck (which is the remaining part after serving the skin and meat) was also very crispy and tasty. Food quality is really excellent, the only short fall is their environment might not be favourable for some as it is an old Shi He Yuan building and not that tidy compared to other famous Peking duck restaurants. But, it is a unique selling point for me and I was so excited to be able to dine in such a traditional environment with excellent food. The wash room is located outside and it is a public toilet. This is the area where the ordinary Beijing people live, and you can have a feel of the ordinary Beijing life. It is indeed a very memorable dining experience for me and I will definitely come back again during my next...
Read moreI think I have found the best Peking Duck restaurant in Beijing. 我觉得这就是北京最好吃的北京烤鸭了。
It’s located in the Hutongs, no queue when we came and although at the entrance you can see a lot of pictures of high profile people who have dined here, the atmosphere here was very authentic and simple. Initially I thought I came to the wrong place because all the Peking Duck restaurants we went were full of people and had a lot of staffs, wearing nice uniform, huge led screens etc at the shop front. This don’t look like a Michelin restaurant at all to me 😅.
When we arrived at around 11am, we were ushered to a small room with 3 tables and were told that the first batch of roasted duck will be ready by 11.30am. No wonder no queue yet as people start coming in around 11.30am.
The roasted duck aroma filled the room when the chef brought it into our room and he wasted no time to carve it.
The duck was so thick and juicy, so pang pang and the fat is not jelak at all. Minimum portion here is own duck. The remaining not so meaty part we requested it 盐酥.
The corn dish was also very good, even now I also think about it.
I will be back !
