The Coffee Academïcs (Happy Valley) — Restaurant in Hong Kong Island

Coffee Academics was one of our early and stronger entries during the Third Wave that started around 15 years ago in Hong Kong. This local, artisan coffee shop has successfully opened branches throughout the city and expanded overseas as well. In Happy Valley you will find this particular branch along Yik Yam Street. They have a nice indoor seating area and a few outdoor tables as well. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm daily.

Seating area at Coffee Academics casual and relaxing. They have a wide menu of coffee, non-coffee and other drinks and a wider than you'd expect range of savoury and sweet, western dishes they can prepare in the kitchen. I like their pancakes, carrot cake slices when available, Yunnan KongQue washed coffee for espresso, espresso tonics and their dark mocha, which I had at this Coffee Academics recently. It was expectedly dark, rich flavour with good hints of espresso.

We used to visit this cafe a lot, so much so that we have money on their loyalty program. My wife and I have stopped visiting as a result of the attitude of the staff. My wife is pregnant and we were in the area and she needed the restroom, so went and asked if she could use the toilet and explained that she was pregnant, the staff member was extremely rude in the way he spoke to my wife and we don't appreciate that, it's fine if he said no in a polite manner, but the attitude of the staff member was really unfriendly. I have also not been able to have a coffee there for quite some time as every time I visit for a quick coffee I am told that I have to spend a minimum of $70 to sit at the cafe, the prices have also been increasing substantially over that last year, these factors cause us to go to the multitude of other coffee shops in Happy Valley that treat their customers with respect. Like others have said there’s been a steady decline at coffee academics in happy valley. Portions smaller, inconsistent presentation, dry sous vide chicken, water soaking the toast. But the thing I most don’t get that is so WRONG is fix up the damn seats outside. Have asked for this for over a year and if it was my business (well it would never have got like this!) I’d fix it in a day. If even fix it for them but they don’t seem to have an attitude of gratitude. Your outdoor seats are Rusted, they put rust on your customers clothes, cover it with any reasonable self-adhesive vinyl… just get it done as I’ve resolved not to eat here again until it’s fixed.

[Edit - after nearly a year since first raising the issue, CA have finally covered the seats - all four of them - with new material. About time, add one star back. Will try menu in next week to see if...
