On this chilly winter night, I finally convinced my DH to eat Claypot Rice with me which he always says he doesn't like.
Tried our luck at 嚐囍 in ktown at 9pm, still a long queue managed by an angry lady. Hungry and cold, I googled desperately for an alternative and randomly came across this place. 光記 on Water Street in Sai Wan.
First, I am greeted by a kind lady, who helpfully suggested we move our car right in front so she can help watch for cops. Second, she invited me to wait inside even though there's barely any space. Third, she manages well my expectations that the claypot rice will take long time, and would I like to try their 例湯 while I wait, only $10. The soup 章魚發菜蠔豉煲豬骨.. was already a show stopper. I managed to order the last bowl before they ran out.
As for the Claypot rice, at least on par or better than any of the "famous" places. The rice bottom crust was just perfectly crispy, without becoming hard and thick and chewy. On the side, a humble plate of 臘腸炒芥蘭苗. My husband, the carnivore, ate half the plate of veg, which is unheard of.

Read moreThis must be the local neighbourhood favourite. Just half past 5, the non stop phone calls for takeaway order quickly filled up the quite atmosphere of the restaurant.
With only 5 tables in this small and inconspicuous store, the few reviews showcasing its sweet and sour ribs caught my interest to give it a try.
You can quickly sense that the patrons are regular as the lady boss seems to be able to call out their name. Food was affordable and serving was generous. It cost merely HKD 15 for a bowl of soup good to serve 3 person.
Best part of this place, with the patrons being regular and slightly more mature folks, the restaurant accommodates a more healthy and personalised order - “less meat, more vegetables please”and “less salt”.
I ordered the satay beef glass noodle pot, sweet and sour pork ribs, salt and spice fried tofu and stir fry fresh green. Of course there’s plenty food to take away because there’s...
Read moreTucked away in a quiet corner, this spot serves some of the most satisfying claypot rice I’ve had in Hong Kong. The rice is fragrant and perfectly cooked, with that coveted crispy bottom—just the right amount of crunch without being burnt. The chicken and lap mei combo (HKD 115) is hearty and generous, easily enough to satisfy a hungry diner.
What really sets this place apart is the warm hospitality. The proprietors are lovely—genuinely kind and welcoming. Even during peak dinner hours (it gets very busy), they never rush you out. The vibe is relaxed, unpretentious, and feels like home.
Bonus points: they stay open super late, a rarity in HK these days. Each claypot is made to order, so call in 30 minutes ahead. A comforting claypot rice will be ready for you...
