Even though google maps is restricted in China, the bar is located correctly and worth a visit!
This is one of four Shingo Gokan’s cocktail bars in Shanghai. And you can see his signature everywhere (glasses, liquor, pictures etc).
Atmosphere 9/10 Located in a very vibrant part with a strong nightlife. Huge building with multiple places inside. Sober Bar is located on 2 floors with plenty of seating and 2 bars. Can recommend the 2nd floor for a more private ambience. Dimmed low lights and overall upscale atmosphere. Note that there is a speakeasy on the 2nd floor, called “Tipsy” - you have to ask for access. Super creative concept. And the speakeasy is more intimate with more creative drinks. The complex also has a club/lounge on third floor, which is not associated with the cocktail bar, but influences the overall atmosphere/experience for sure
Drinks 8/10 Recommendation: Monkey Old Fashioned (Sober), Godfather (Tipsy) Both bars have creative menus. Sober has a menu based on Regions of Japan. Tipsy is playing with classic cocktails, providing them a twist. Coaster-game is top notch. High quality glasses and custom ice cubes. Drinks were overall good.
Service 8/10 Friendly team, but attention is limited due to the big size of the bar. Water served in the spot. Prices are above average for Shanghai.
Bar was officially #39 World’s Best Bars in 2021
Since google maps doesn’t work properly in China, i can recommend an Instagram account with exhaustive review of all major cocktail bars for China:...
Read moreSober Company staff let me tell you this: racial discrimination is the common enemy of the whole world. No matter where you are, locals always fight against racial discrimination. I assume some of your bartenders and waiters (maybe even owners) didn’t receive enough education to understand this international consensus. It’s rare to see a restaurant/bar opening in downtown playing the racial profiling and front stage racial discrimination card without concealment. EVERY bartender and waiter on the first floor are racists, with no disguise. Ask your first floor Japanese manager and his apprentice OD about it. Chinese on Chinese, Japanese on Chinese, you think we’re still living in the early 20th century when the Japanese invasion was still in progress? Ask yourselves about it! Anyway, I’ve collected hundreds of negative comments on the Chinese version of Yelp indicating your racial discrimination behaviors and intentions. I will send these to Asia’s best bars ranking organization. I will request the organization to validate your rank on the top 50s——how come a bar openly plays the racial discrimination card can still make it...
Read moreI had a night in Shanghai to check out just one cocktail bar and I chose Sober Company, where I had nothing short of an amazing time. The location from Google map isn’t accurate and this bar is located in the big building just by the park. There are two bars on the second floor where the hidden one is called Tipsy. Managed to check out both Sober and Tipsy but must say that I prefer the former than the latter. Sober company’s cocktail menu was more vibrant and cheeky, while Tipsy’s menu seems slightly predictable even though I love its take on the classics. A worthwhile place...
