We came here expecting a bit of a tourist trap but was pleasantly surprised. El Avión is a one-of-a-kind restaurant built around a real vintage cargo airplane that’s been transformed into a bar! The novelty of sipping a cocktail inside the fuselage of a historic C-123 is worth the visit alone, but the experience goes far beyond the plane. We came just before sunset and were treated to incredible panoramic views of the Pacific from the open-air dining area — absolutely breathtaking. It’s easily one of the best places in town to watch the sun dip below the ocean while enjoying a relaxed, tropical vibe. The food exceeded expectations — fresh, flavorful, and well-portioned. The catch of the day ( red snapper), grouper filet and surf and turf grilled tenderloin dish were especially standout. Service was friendly and efficient despite how busy it gets. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just chasing sunsets with a drink in hand, El Avión delivers an unforgettable experience. Make sure to arrive before sunset and definitely check out the airplane bar!

Okay this place is very cool to grab a drink only. We went because its an old 737 that crashed there many years ago so they built a restaurant around it. We had my 5 year old nephew and 3 year old niece who loved the cock pit and dancing inside the plane. Our waiter was good but in Costa Rica no one is in a rush and my brother acted like a typical American who wanted his food quick. So the waiter just let's people relax and enjoy the views and get some drinks. He was great. We literally saw monkeys while sitting at our table. Now the food I would pass on for sure. We had a variety of different dishes and the best thing we got was the kids meals with the chicken strips. It was very expensive and you got appetizer size portions for your entre. Do not recommend the food. I even went downtown after to go shopping next to the national park and the restaurant guys were like gross why would you eat there. So I would try downtown closer to the entrance of the National park. Again you are paying for the view and the airplane experience.

El Avión was such an amazing experience that we actually went twice during our stay! The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff went above and beyond—not only with their service but also by sharing the fascinating history behind the restaurant. I was astonished and even more intrigued after learning the story. The pricing was even more beautiful lol we felt like a true Queen & King dining in eating exclusively and affordable. The plane itself was such a cool touch! Being able to tour the aircraft inside the restaurant made the visit truly unique and unforgettable. Between the incredible food, the one-of-a-kind atmosphere, and the friendly staff, this place is a 10/10. We’ll definitely be back again!

There was a very kind gentleman that directed us both in and out of a parking spot!

So amazing to not have to blindly back up into traffic. Very friendly lovely man!

A person we know was at this restaurant about 10 days ago, and their pictures showed Toucans, a mama sloth plus they said they saw monkeys. They had nothing but positive things to say re: their experience.

The parking was our hi-light of our own visit though.

The person who sat us was rude - we asked if we could sit with a view and was told more than once ‘no, this is all we have for two people’. We had politely only asked the one time.

Yet, she then sat no less than three other couples - they also did not have reservations right after us (I asked them when I went to the bathroom) in great viewing seats of the ocean, vegetation etc.

Our sever never asked if we wanted any more drinks, if the food was ok, if we wanted or if we needed anything. Another server who took our plates was asked for a dessert menu and then forgot. So, my husband decided to not ask again.

A female server who came by to pick up our empty drink glasses was asked for the check and she forgot. We then asked one of the male servers, and he forgot and my husband had to flag down someone again.

We found the servers standing in the bar area and laughing and talking instead of checking on the paying customers. We were not the only ones trying to get service. Several tables were openly complaining to each other.

None of the staff seemed to care about customer service, and if it were not for the kind soul helping with parking, the stars on this review would be lower.

There are plenty of options on the menu to choose from, and the restaurant has a very unique setup plus layout of the restaurant.

The food was ok. Nothing exceptional.

We drove over 1.5 hours to visit this restaurant based upon Facebook reviews, and that a person we know had a great experience plus saw some...

El Avion is in Manuel Antonio. As the name suggests it has something to do with an airplane. The restaurant uses an old airplane as part of it's decor and restaurant. We seated ourselves in the upper floor and got to take in the breath taking view of the Pacific while we dined on some great food. The ambience is quite casual yet you do get a feeling of being in a fine dining place. I ordered the special which was mahi mahi fish topped with shrimp and had mashed potatoes and veggies on the side. It was absolutely delicious. We also ordered arroz con camerons ( rice and shrimp), and some fajitas. However what stole the show was the special of the day. We saw some folks ordering burgers. From the looks of it they seem to be a must try as well. The service I feel was tardy and it seemed like we got treated differently coz we looked different. I was pretty disappointed in the behavior of the gentleman who was waiting on us. Rather arrogant and ofcourse not really attentive. Hence my reason for not giving 5 stars. However that aside it is definitely a place I recommend you visit. It is a place good for children too. If you wish to dine on some great food, watch the blue ocean beat against the shore and all you can see is the horizon then I highly recommend El Avion....

This is an iconic place in Manuel Antonio and has an outstanding view. This was perhaps my 3rd time here over the years and the food and service has definitely has had a decline. We came in for a drink and something to snack on so we ordered a Piña Colada and a Pura Vida (signature cocktail) they were both on the average size considering the price but good amount of liquor and good flavor. We also ordered some beef nachos, this on the other hand were very disappointing. They were rather small for the price. They were also over cooked and done with very little care. The beans were dry, the cheese was scarse and baked into the plate. Finally, my friend ordered a vanilla ice cream covered with chocolate on a stick... Ergo a supermarket popsicle like a Magnum 🤨 (see photo)

To make it worse the waiter was borderline rude, took forever to bring a glass of water and finally brought us the bill without us asking for it. I we paid a total of $30.46, and the "delicious popsicle cost $3.45!

Definitely not a place I would recommend for food. But maybe a cocktail and the sunset view. However the offer in the area is wide and varied I'm sure you can find a...
