LET EVERYONE TAKE THEIR OWN PICTURE. I usually don’t write reviews, but today’s experience at The Fat Fig, Paphos - Chloraka, made me change my mind. We chose the restaurant based on its great reviews and our desire to try the local cuisine. However, we should have taken it as a warning sign when we found out upon arrival that dishes featured in the photos on their website (e.g., octopus) were no longer available because the restaurant had a new owner.
Let me preface this by saying that we are quite experienced travelers and can overlook a lot. Moreover this is our 15th visit to Cyprus. We ordered two appetizers: tzatziki with nachos and chili garlic prawns. The tzatziki was bland, and the nachos had a rather odd taste. The prawns were a major disappointment—overcooked to the point of being tough and, again, completely tasteless.
The worst part was yet to come. My husband ordered prawns as his main course. Leaving aside the fact that he received rice instead of the ordered potatoes, the prawns had a noticeable odor. There was no sign of the advertised garlic and "butter bath". The food was truly decadent as the menu says. My husband returned the dish immediately. Instead of an apology, the upset lady owner came to emphatically insist that they only use fresh ingredients and that there was nothing wrong. She also made sure to stress that she would hate for us to spread the word about the restaurant that they use old ingredients.
We lost confidence by this point, and my husband didn’t order any dish as a replacement. Within five minutes, what appeared to be the co-owner showed up, again trying to convince us that everything was fine and that the spices used probably did not suit us. As I mentioned, we travel often and have plenty of comparisons to draw from. We’ve never had such low-quality prawns, not even in landlocked countries.
To top it off, we were charged the full price for this disappointing meal. An absolute display of unprofessionalism. Instead of focusing on improving their services—including cleaning the dirty children’s play area—the owners seem to spend their time writing lengthy justifications for the negative reviews that have started appearing on Google recently.
To be fair, the waitress was friendly and nice, deserving a full 5-star rating.
We absolutely do not recommend...
Read moreNow, I get it…you pay all-inclusive at a hotel and never venture out for food or entertainment. Kids are happy, your partners happy and then that make you happy, right! But travel is about little adventures and tasting new foods and drink. So, after many years of saying no more all-inclusive holidays we are staying at St George’s Hotel & Spa Resort, half board. This then makes us periodically pop out to get what we need and share the love. We came to this restaurant day two for a drink at lunchtime. The venue is very quiet but we are greeting in a friendly manner and I order a banana and strawberry smoothie which is made fresh and ice cold….delicious, and exactly what the doctor order in the 35degree heat. My wife and I will our 8month old grandson take shelter under the abundant fruit tree canopy - allowing the cool sea breeze to temper the ambient heat. I share this cool drink with grandson and after 30mins - pay the €10 bill. Now, we are so happy with the range of food and drink offered and that cool breeze - that we return on two further occasions. So, pls pop out from the hotels and try local restaurants and bars especially this restaurant. They all have what you want in varying degrees. Food - 100% Drink - 100% Service - 80% ( visited 3x and varied) Ambience - 60% ( early lunch so very quiet) Extras - 90% ( lovely cool breeze) Cleanliness - 90% ( outside so will never be perfect but very well done) Happy to...
Read moreIt's not always easy to find vegan food in Cyprus so when we found a menu online that had two interesting options we drove out specifically for the evening. Except one was a misprint and the other wasnt available. We had already bought a bottle of wine for the table at this point unfortunately. One of the owners seemed surprised we would want to leave and asked us if there's really nothing on the menu we would eat and that they could prepare something off-menu. We suggested falafel, a fairly typical Mediterranean option. No, not that. Alrighty then. Then I suppose the choice is grilled aubergines or grilled aubergines. Which, I'm sorry to sound snobby, is a major eye-roller for vegans.
We didn't get to try the food but the ambience was nice enough, the menu looked slightly expensive by local standards and the staff were nice enough I guess but perhaps could have done more.
Edit for the owner. I wrote this review on the basis of the offerings advertised but 'not available', not the theoretical offerings which were not on the menu and not offered. We were nothing but kind to you and who we presume is your partner, despite being collectively surprised at her flippancy when we politely informed you we would be moving on. Your ill-tempered response does your...
