Came here on recommendation to try the herring. The food was okay, and the specific waitress that helped us in the beginning was nice. I say specific because the other staff were not so nice; as soon as I walked in, They staff that had been dawdling had left the front desk to find something to do or hide in the back. That was a total of 4 waitresses that watched as we came in, looked at each other and then gave knowing smiles as they hopped off to ‘do something else’. I literally watched all of them as they peeked back at me every so often as if asking me to leave.
I’m not sure if it’s because they are uncomfortable speaking English or it’s because I’m Asian, but we didn’t get seated until 8 minutes later this cute young waitress saw us standing in the front and looked around to see nobody else “available”. I think she was maybe newer, because I didn’t see too much interaction with the new waitresses, and the two that went behind the bar snickered when she came to help us.
The food itself wasn’t too bad. There is a free salad bar. For the dish I ordered (the fried herring), they give you a good helping of delicious mashed potatoes, and the herring was pretty interesting. Herring is actually one of my favourite fish though, so I’ve had it many ways already and I admit that this was not my top.
Overall, the food is average (a bit pricey) and the staff are average (Good thing the first waitress was polite; otherwise I’d take another star), and the atmosphere is nice. If you’ve been to or live in North America, it’s kinda like a...
Read moreRemarkably old and traditional Finnish restaurant now unfortunately at totally new location relatively close to its old location. Prices in this establishment are higher than average but it might be worth it.
I've heard stories of this establishment way before I ended up here to see what kind of place it really is. It was really crowded when I visited this place. It was so crowded that I decided to enjoy only remarkably pricey regular lager at the terrace.
This place is so popular that this popularity can be seen from their prices. It could be worth it but I can't buy my food from here. Atmosphere was really packed but still it was really cozy which might be the reason why there was so much people here.
I just adore their decorative elements. They have so much interesting details. Atmosphere is strongly related this. Everything feels really cozy inside. This place feels remarkably old even though this establishment used to be located at very old building relatively close to this new location.
Even though I personally don't have afford to visit this place I still strongly recommend this establishment. It has that old time traditional and historical vibe which modern restaurants rarely achieve. Finnish food paired with old time vibes is a mixture that people definitely...
Read moreI chose this place because it was close to my hotel and had great reviews. It looked like a great place to dine in groups (usually of 4 or more, very few tables of 2), but I made the mistake of going alone for dinner and the experience was generally meh.
The food tasted good, though everything felt overly salty, but that may be accountable to my relatively bland pallette. The salad bar was quaint but worth trying. The portions were HUGE, I could barely finish my appetizer and regretted ordering an appetizer and a main menu item (fried herring). The salmon soup, my appetizer, was excellent, though I feel the portion could have been much smaller. Would be fine to share between two people though. The servers generally ignored me (understandable, as a single diner) but when I managed to get their attention, they were very nice.
All in all it was a hurried and not-so-cheap dining experience. I'd try again but with...
