We had a wonderful meal here our first night in Epernay. The space is small and cozy and they keep the heat up! We experienced this all over France, actually, in mid-November; I think as compared to NY, they tend to keep the heat up higher when it's chilly/rainy outside. We quickly got used to shedding our coats and possibly a layer of clothing whenever we entered a restaurant!!
We chose different tiers of their prix fixe menu to suit our palattes desires, and were absolutely blown away by everything that was presented to us. We did the champagne tasting, so we each got a total of 4 glasses of champagne. I loved 3 of the 4 -- the rose that came with dessert was not for me...but I'm not a fan of rose generally, so this was to be expected. FOOD. OK. Bread was obviously perfect to start. For appetizers, I got the Oysters Saint Vaast Gratin with a champagne cream sauce -- delicious, not fishy, very filling. My husband got the Baked Eggs with Chaource Cheese Cream and I think we both almost cried with tears of delicious, delicious joy. This was probably the best thing I ate over our entire 11day honeymoon. If I wouldn't gain 50lbs as a direct result, I'd learn this recipe and eat it every day. It's almost like a soup made entirely of egg, cream, and cheese. It is so decadent. It has been almost a month and I still think about it every day.
Entrees - I ordered the Cod fillet in a velvet champagne sauce over squid ink risotto - excellent. Perfect sized portion had I indulged appropriately in the bread and appetizer phases of this meal. Would get the same thing again if I went back. Husband got something that I either didn't care to try because I was filling up so quickly, or something I tried and didnt love. I can't remember exactly. Could have been the beef tenderloin or could have been rabbit something or other. I think it was rabbit........not for me. But he reported that it was wonderful, so 5 star continues. FINALLY, dessert. I got the trilogy of cheese...because why not. Husbadn got the creme brulee with vanilla bourbon ice cream. Both were delightful. We ate a few bites and rolled our way out of there.
I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone passing through Epernay. Our airbnb host recommended it to us and I am so glad we picked this one out of the small list he provided. I'd return in...
Read moreEssential you don't miss dinner here. over the years we have dined her on Multiple occasions. this trip we we traveling with my 2 adult children (both seasoned travellers and gourmands in their own right) and we all agree that it is one of the most authentic and genuinely welcoming places to eat in France. The venue is small and booking advised. The staff are exceptional on the last 2 occasions one lady was serving and doing all front of house on here own. She was super friendly and genuinely welcoming making you feel like you had gone to your favourite Aunts for dinner. The wine list is extensive and well priced and the food is mainly locally sourced traditional fare and absolutely amazing. On our last night there was a table of local gentlemen fresh from the fields, a young man who proposed to his darling, some very serious English restaurant owners looking for something they could pick on, a number of locals and our table of mad Aussies. Everyone was made to feel like the most important visitors there. I adore this place and it really says something that before the we travel for almost 2 days from the opposite side of the planet from Australia to France the booking will be made...
Read moreFirst of all the team at La Cave are truly professional and have a great attitude. Even the chef whom we were looking at in the kitchen gave a smile and acknowledgement to us. The food order was taken sincerely and the served professionally as well. We were even served water when he saw we needed it but didn’t ask for it, a really nice and generous gesture. Now on to the food, we had escargots and oysters for starters and they were really delicious. I can’t really describe the recipe for the escargots but it was with pork and fats and super well cooked full of flavour. The oysters was baked with cream and cheese and were really yummy. Didn’t had enough stomach to try the foie gras but i’m sure it would have been really good. The mains we selected were Beef filet and Cod fish with squid ink risotto. Beef was cooked to perfection (saignant) and really juicy. Cod was fresh and the risotto and the sauce that came with it was extremely delicious. Overall a 5 star experience and who recommend this place to anyone who...
